sterile is exactly the feeling I got trying to read normal people. I couldn't get past 50 pages because it felt so clinical. clearly there's an audience for that, or people who "get" that style, but it's not for me and I just don't get what people like about her work

headphones on, coffee in hand...class has started. class ended...rate your professor : 5/5! love these author spotlights! quotes: "there is kindness in a little bit of spanking" 👏👏👏 " i just wish she cared about her story as much as she did her lessons" just from the quotes you showed, i could tell that her writing is superficial and her lessons that she brings up would only satisfy those who are living under a rock. also does she hate women? i have never read her books so i cant add much but the bdsm part alone gave me an icky feeling. Adding motherhood to my tbr!
@Babiebackbooks

😂💕 Thank you! I really enjoy making them! They take the most work behind the scenes, but it's satisfying to really dig into a book/author. So! Everything to do with sex and the body gave me an icky feeling! And I think this is the effect of her making everything into a motif rather than actually writing characters. (..?) Like she wants to show how women are perceived and wants to show the uncaring side of how women are treated in sexual spaces, but as a reader I feel just how you feel! Icky! But then again--if that was her intent...then good job?? [Fun fact, I see all of these books labeled as "romance" in Goodreads and Storygraph, which is even more interesting with the level of "ick".] Side note: I just started My Heart is a Chainsaw after waiting months for it on Libby and I am OBSESSED so far! It's a unique narrative voice that I'm enjoying. I remember you thinking about grabbing it, or saying you started it and I never heard if you got to it yet. If you did--thoughts and vibes?

Another sad sign of what the world has become. People are like cattle. Being led to the same books. Reading them whether they are of interest to them or not. It really has become insane! It's what everyone is reading.. it's what's being promoted. The best books often fly below the radar. It's such a shame. Books are supposed to open your mind... hohum

You know what really made me question myself? When I was returning my book to my local bookstore, ALL the employees were wildly bamboozled that I didn't like the book! There wasn't a single person in a group of what I assume to be well-read people that agreed with how much I disliked it. One of my favorite booksellers said "the beginning is really hard to get through, you just have to stick through it" ... uhm... no? Do you know how many amazing books there are in this world? So I don’t know about you but this was my first SG Jones. (I have My Heart is a Chainsaw on hold) The writing was so simplistic and felt very conversational and raw. It FIT the character. It was slow. Like at times it was difficult. But I think it wouldn’t have been as good if it were a faster read? @@Babiebackbooks I've been good!! Reading A LOT of horror lately and a cozy mystery that was all over the place in a bad way haha but mostly hits. Currently reading Brainwyrms 🙌 anywayssss I loved Lewis part! It was amazing, if just his part was a short story it would've been 5/5 stars to me. I agree that the strong point was how slow it was to really get into the characters because it's 4 strangers to fit in a 300 pg book??? So spending more time with them and their small tangents helped. I wish I could just read the ones I have and pick a stack for the month and stick to it. lol. I feel so attacked by this 😂 because I'm not even going to talk about the books that I OWN that I honestly will never go near because of my never-ending library rotation. And when it comes to Libby, I am the worst about just scrolling through and maxing out the holds list. I find Paul Tremblay as an author to be a very hit or miss for people in general! He has a very specific writing style that is very slow and it almost feels like there is little reward to how the books themselves end. He's one of those "enjoy the journey" kinds of writers I think. Like I just finished The Pallbearer's Club by him and wasn't much into it, but I know a lot of people that LOVED it. And I think my issue was I put this expectation on it that something major would happen, when its a "come here for the vibes"-story. I've been in a thriller slump! It's been awful!

Truly. The characters jump off of the page. The movie is an amazing rendition, but there's something about huddling with that book that will sit with me forever. The Dark Tower series has a cult following--but don't do it to yourself, you deserve better. My final answer: Pet Sematary then Dreamcatcher (I need to reread Dreamcatcher at some point so there's most likely another Stephen King video in my future)

I promise that I am going to come back and watch this... as soon as I read Salem's Lot. That's, like, my last King novel I actually want to read. And Pet Semetary. But besides that, I will come back! Also, no idea if you mentioned this, but I really enjoyed his writing in Cujo. Devastating? Absolutely, but there was this one moment where he used a specific word (I'm re-reading it soon, so I'll edit once I read that part again) and it propelled me into the book itself. Like, I was a reader outside the book, but it also became something so real and personal in my mind with that single word. Besides that... I struggle with him as an author at times, but I'm hoping my next two reads live up to the tale!
@Babiebackbooks
@Babiebackbooks Месяц назад
Yesyesyes, you worded this so perfectly. Devastating is the perfect word for how I felt during that story. And I love that you brought it up because the more I sit back the more I feel like some of the most major King novels aren't even "scary". They play to this very livable and real feeling that I think makes Stephen King "special". Like it's almost mundane? I need to go read a thesaurus and figure out how I feel. But "fear" isn't it-- Hope that makes even a shred of sense..? Don't get me wrong. Dreamcatcher is a book I read back in high school that I remember striking REAL FEAR in me. And IT is honestly a type of fear that needs to go down in history. But Pet Sematary and Cujo? I feel that empty sort of dread. You have me thinking now. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts about Salem's Lot! I'm excited <3 Even if you hate it, we'll still be friends 😂😭❤️

I saw the movie of Pet Semetary, didn’t read the book. I almost wish I had read it instead because I personally enjoy building the characters and setting in my mind. Sometimes in movies based on books, stuff doesn’t get portrayed the way I think it would. Then I find I judge movies harsher because I built my own mental movie off the book lol. Anywho, I love your channel so much. The way you talk about books is very thorough and really helps grasps what the book is about. When you post on Saturdays, I get to watch it when I wake up and have coffee. 😊

Aww thank you! I tell myself that I'm not spoiling the book, but after I've ranted about a singular book for 10 minutes I'm pretty sure there's no secrets left lol. I need to stop lying to myself and accept that this is a whole spoiler channel. I haven't seen the Pet Sematary movie! I think there's an older version and a remake AND a spinoff..? When it comes to Stephen King movie adaptations I only hear amazing things about IT and The Shining, otherwise the distaste runs rampant across the entire board. My main thing when it comes to Stephen King is that I can recognize a talented author, but then I also don't understand the hype? I think he's so amazing because he has paved the way in the horror genre. He walked so others could run. But he has diehard fans that say he is still a leading author even today. And I don't quite think I agree with that sentiment.

@@Babiebackbooks I agree, he has talent for sure. However, nowadays there are so many wonderful authors who may not even get the credit they deserve because there’s already well known authors people are so familiar with. I do enjoy his films, Misery being my favorite. Due to his well known movies, it’s prevented me from reading his books since I’m already familiar with the story.

@@Babiebackbooks i definitely need to do a reread of this book. im so sad. i thought i had wrote down my thoughts but unfortunately i didn’t and i just remember telling my cousin about this book. if im remembering correctly, i think this book for what it was was executed well. i ate this book up reading it in one day. i believe i rated it a 4 star (although that could change upon a re read). with the nature of the book i couldn’t give it a 5. i think it did what it needed to do and it told its story without dragging on or including unnecessary details. i went through so many emotions while reading this book and i just remembered when i finished i asking myself wtf did i just read lol. one thing i felt i did was i tried to give the mc some humility. to me it gave a sense throughout that he was going to “do the right thing”, but we know how that turned out. i was so disappointed in the moment, but upon reflection i had to accept that what he did at the end, was who he truly was throughout the book. he took advantage and manipulated jasmine and he never truly saw her as a person. he got what he wanted did her dirty and still saw her as cattle at the end. then to bring in the wife and for her to initially be disgusted about the situation, only to then become upset because he took away the opportunity to “breed” more children. like wtf? i don’t know if this was her being selfish or what on her part especially considering what she was going through throughout the story. then there’s the sister, whom i found annoying. i was low key excited when the mc told her off, but she came off to me as an opportunist, materialistic if not a bit of a narcissist. again if im remembering correctly. i believe there was a few more females in this story. i think there was a doctor and the caregiver, but i don’t remember if i had any thoughts on them. in the end i enjoyed this book with its gore and all. i can definitely see myself rereading this book again.

Eeeeee! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Okay first off. Let's get right into this chart 😂 Cancer ☀️ Libra 🌔 Gemini ⬆️ (and my Mercury AND Venus are in Leo). So all my primary houses are the twins making me either the most balanced person you could possibly meet or the most temperamental. Very in touch with my emotions in an almost detrimental kind of way. There isn't an earth sign in my ENTIRE chart. And I have only ever dated cancers (I promise this is a complete accident, I don't know what is wrong with me!) I don't know if I believe them because I refuse to believe the stars are reading me to FILTH like this 😭 Okay. To the journals. thank you ❤️ I have definitely grown into my journaling style. I didn't use to put so much of my personal creativity into my books by any means. When it comes to time, most of my journaling actually occurs on my weekly coffee shop time. Something about going somewhere with the intention to write and take time with my thoughts is so important to me. Now--I HAVE caught myself writing and crying in public, so maybe take that advice with a grain of salt. 😅 My daily lil memory keeper is small enough that I bust it out with my morning coffee. I sit and just take down what happened the day before. But usually the field notes book you see is a scratch paper of all the thoughts I want to sit with when I have the time. So when I do take the space to hang out with my journals, I just flip through the scrap paper of all my jumbled thoughts and will look up articles, doodle, print something, or just chat shit. That scrap paper literally has things like "heard lady on a subway say she broke up with her man because she was too embarrassed to talk to her therapist about him anymore" or "what even is cthulu" or "1960's furniture". Then when I sit down with my journals I have like a backstock of random scraps of thoughts. But I maybe sit with my everything book like 3-4 times a week? Do you have a system!? What is your lil book stack? 2025 plans?
