Most films were not originally 4:3, especially since the 50's when cinemascope came out. Most full screen presentations are in fact pan & scan meaning things from the sides are missing. This is most noticeable in full screen versions of Alien (1979) and Halloween (1978) and all the Star Wars films. There may be some movies made after the 1950s that were originally 4:3 but they're few and far between. For example The Dark Knight and other films that were made with IMAX in mind have been cropped on the top and bottom to fit the widescreen format.
I've noticed a trend recently with collectors...they don't discuss movies at all in any context. It's all about justifying having 50 grand sat on a shelf. It's a dopamine thing plain and simple, wanting that reward for handing your money over. If you drop dead tomorrow, what happens to your collection of plastic and acrylic?
I must confess I started with a well organised collection (by genre and director) but I ran out of room and now I am accused of being a hoarder. sigh. Yet, I have so many films you cant watch elsewhere or are censored. I had a friend who also had a space problem so he decieded to sell his entire dvd/blu-ray collection and watch them on Netflix instead. You, guessed it within a few months they started removing ALL the films/series he wanted to watch so he cancelled and is now trying to rebuild his collection.
I live in deep rural America and run 💯 off solar. Just bought a PS4 slim. Low power usage and still has a disc drive. I don't have starlink and even if I did it would use up my entire monthly bandwidth cap downloading a game or two. My PS4 and a gaming monitor use just under 200 watts.
This video would have been better with some actual examples. I remember the scene in which Bridget Fonda has sex with Robert DeNiro in the kitchen which in de 4:3 version of the movie you can actually see below her waist, whereas in the widescreen version this scene the picture is cut off at her waist.
If you're buying something for your collection because you'd feel bad otherwise for not owning it, then you're missing the point of collecting I think. Collecting should only make you feel good, you shouldn't be feeling bad.
Very interesting, a lot of people dismiss DVD as a format. It would be interesting if you did a pros and cons of DVD on different output devices. Keep up the excellent content!!
I'll go for the widescreen if I can. I always heard in the CRT days that widescreen Showed more on the sides. I didn't know that full screen showed more on the bottom and top. My modern widescreen TVs are able to stretch the image under setings, which I don't mind using. It's funny how I prefered full screen back in the CRT days because of the black bar on the top and bottom. 😅 Now I don't like full screen because of the black bars on the sides.
I think this video has it backwards; most films do crop or pan and scan to the sides when creating the full screen version. Since the 1950s most films were originally in a widescreen format. Hello There is a version of 2.35 scope film called Super 35 which has slightly more vertical frame information when displayed on a 4.3 Display. To films come to mind in this Format are True Lies and Airforce One. I have a 38cm Non Widescreen LCD Monitor which I have been using lately to watch Older material such as Classic Doctor Who and Animation such as Loony Tunes and they look very Natural off it.
I have found that many DVDs in my collection look better on CRTs than even the Blue Ray releases on my OLED screens or perhaps provide a more consistent image especially with blue/green screen or CG heavy movies. Even with an up scaling Sony BRD/DVD player those DVDs also look better on CRT. When I buy used DVDs I try to get them in full screen for my 32in Trinitron with component DVD player. I repurchased a couple of my favorite shows Farscape and Game of Thrones (Under $40 each) on DVD recently although I already the BRD sets and was very happy with the results.
as a normal collector..collect what u want and what u will watch again, if storage is full you can start to sell it again, there always a buyer..buy a secondhand is good too..no need to buy newest every purchase.
I made it like 5 minutes to already coming to something that's just wrong. I objectively there is benefits to owning the best picture you can get. The difference between 4k and hd/blu ray isnt huge but the jump from dvd to a hd format is huge. Buying a DVD version of anything now that 4k screens are the norm is pointless. You'd get better picture quality from a steaming service than a physical DVD. The only argument for DVD is native 4:3 support and a CRT or projector
Visuals are all I care about. I spent 7,000 dollars for a 77" mla oled for just my ps5. Because I hate handhelds, I will never waste my data cap on games or streaming anything. So pc is a non starter with me
I'm so hyped for Daima. I Grew up with recorded tapes(family friends brought them overfrom JP) of DB and DBZ before it started airing in the states. I love DB, Z, GT, and Grew to love Super. Canon or not all the series are so much fun. Just saying.
blu rays and 4k's are not expensive... try to collect 35mm movies plus 35mm capable projector...good luck. Most movies cost like ca. $1200 or even more
"Pro" consoles and other "refresh" consoles like xbox one x/s exist only because the PC hardware is evolving rapidly. And what's inside the PS4 and Xbox One? Exactly, custom designed PC hardware (cpu, ram, gpu ect.) To keep up with modern game engines, consoles get "new" upgrade to handle newest software like raytracing, physics even AI. On PC side it's very easy. swap the gpu, or cpu or another part...easy peasy. Consoles? No way. sry4 my english

I’ve grown to the same boredom that is modern tech. The point of “it’s good” is enough to get me to be comfortable getting good performance from these devices. Phone wise I’m still rocking a Oneplus 7T from 2019, got in 2020, and nearly 5 years later performance is great still. May even do the battery repair myself one day and squeeze more time from it. Nonetheless, my mind no longer goes down the route of “people overpay” just cause who cares what others do right? If it means you’ll use it and are happy, then mate, buy it and be happy. Typing this on an iPad mini 4 from almost 9 years ago, with a gifted iPad Pro 2018, used as my more modern tablet use case for some tasks. I’ll use either OS if it’s good enough for the task it’s needed for.

As a kid, having movie nights where before home internet, it was like our own theatre type experience. As I got older I used to simulate in my head being like a tv network and getting to pick what movie or episodes to play in that given moment. As strange as it sounds, my big interest at a younger age for discs was no matter what service outage or whatever happens on a streamer, I can play some content. I’ve essentially built up with physical and digital media that I could lay off the internet for content. Music wise I bought some digital albums off Bandcamp that are ZIP files backed up to drives since getting albums shipped to Canada has crazy shipping costs from what I’m getting 😂😓. Appreciate you! Joel was a strange one. I spent a lot of time watching him and following his auto-biography series. He then didnt conclude it (leaving us on a cliffhanger, with more questions than answers) then he kind of vanished. His comments about insurance were frustrating. Reckless, in fact. And no one knows what became of him. To that end, I hope he and the family are happy. I got the impression from Joel that he couldnt settle on what he wanted his channel to be. There was constant chopping and changing and re-uploading and then all of that building work! I can relate to that, to a small extent.
I used to do this, it's very much an addiction and the only thing giving value to any of it is that other people are also addicted to it. Your physical media will degrade and you will fall out of love with the titles you once loved as you age. There's also more media being created than a single person could possibly consume nowadays.... I'm OK with the digitized versions of the things I love. They take up hardly any space and I can delete the ones I don't want anymore. They will never degrade; only the things I store them on will degrade and I can transfer them before that happens. At the end of the day we're talking about digitized information stored on physical media. The only way to perpetually store analog media is to digitize it too. I'm old enough to have seen all these trends come and go. Oh, you're collecting vinyl now, as if that's not been done before? It's a hipster fad and little more. Low quality sound on an antiquated storage device. There's a very good reason it was replaced... Just don't get artificial demand mixed up with real world value or tomorrow your expensive collection will be worthless and you'll be sitting there wondering why that is. Once, people wanted these things, and eventually they won't.
Not only physical media is good for preservation, but also you get other bonus materials or paper that we cannot get from streaming services, such as special features, small booklet about the film that was narrated by the director etc. those stuff feels like you got more than you originally brought.
And then sony wants you to get new controller every 6 months, when KNOWN issue with stick drift shows up inevitably. Infuriating!!! Also with recent 100 mil flop of what's that game called, these corpos now need to compensate loses. Riight... PS plus - you NEED subscription to play online games, multiplayer, WTF is this nonsense. Like console comes with free internet service, what exactly am I paying for in that subscription, games I dont want?
Physical media will always remain important. They signify a lot of our childhood memories, that nostalgia of holding something in our hands, will always hold more personal value, importance. People forget the PS5 Pro will be able to hold a disc drive, like the digital ps4, hence why scalpers are buying disc drives up like crazy atm.
I choose the physical medium so that I am above all independent despite the digital age because you are somehow always online and if I decide to watch something in streaming then I also want to watch what I want but now with the advertising interruption it falls It's even harder for me to get interested in streaming because it always takes me away from the film, which is why I haven't watched normal television for decades. It's kind of funny when you think about how the hype about streaming services started. They advertised that you could watch so much without advertising and all for a small fee a month, but that changed quickly over time because streaming has now become the new television with advertising and censorship 😒 I used to love playing video games as a child and teenager, even in my early 20s, games were just as important to me as films, but then this nonsense with DLC came along and that you have to pay to play the full game, that took the joy out of the whole thing for me. I was never a big gamer because I played for fun and enjoyment, but today's developments have completely put me out of the gaming scene.
