The big reason for the movie is about understanding the pressure put on professional runners. And using the story as example of what that can lead to (but providing other example such as other prominent runners that were recently caught cheating and doping). I wouldn’t have reported on this if I had any doubt of the veracity as stated in my video (that Conor and/or Camille did it). I went to the source to confirm what was said, and I avoided speculative statements (e.g., I didn’t say SHE did it necessarily and provided the potential scenario where she was not involved directly). If new information would come that would refute anything I simple, I’d be quick to correct and apologize. But Conor did admit to it, so at the very least, the story is true as I discussed in the video. Did Camille know is anyone’s guess. I’m not speculating on that. I think people mostly want to see sincere apology and accountability. Because if she knew or not, the edits were made to elevate Camille's profile. If she didn't know and disapprove - she can say so. "I was surprised and disappointed to learn about what Conor did. Although I didn't know, I want to be clear that this isn't acceptable, and I'm sorry for anyone we've hurt through this." And to be clear, doing something wrong doesn’t mean you are a bad person. And doing something wrong doesn’t mean that everything you do is wrong or immoral. Nobody is perfect. I think what people would want to see is simply apology and accountability. Nobody is perfect, and most people understand that. As for your question, as discussed in the video, you had two type of reaction. One group (seems you are part of that) was surprised because that’s not how they know her - it feels ‘out of character’. Another group were not surprised and point out to other past behavior, saying it’s ‘in character’. I gave a couple examples in the video (e.g., Ashley, Stine, and please keep in mind that I mostly had to go by memory because her social were down at the time). These aren’t speculative - she’s been public about those. You can also read comments here that bring other examples. The issue people are most upset about isn't the self promotion part, but rather downgrading other people achievements. Self promotion is somewhat normal and expected in professional sport (and yes she does it - anyone claiming to be "the best ultra runner" on their webpage does it). But you can do it without bringing other people down - which is what people are mostly upset about. But again, did she know about wiki specifically? It’s anyone’s guess at this point. But those problematic edits are real, have been flagged enough for editors at wiki to step in, and were done minimally by Conor, potentially without her knowledge.

Something to note about tripping hazards: You should be looking ahead, but when you are in a race/group run, there might be peiple in your normal sight line, which magnifies your risk of tripping because of the blocked vision. If you arent fast enough to come past, consider dropping back while on these sections to minimise tripping hazards.
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon День назад
Very true. You have to keep a couple of pace to see far enough. The advantage I find in following is that you don’t have to keep track of finding trail marker as much. So you can focus on looking near (vs both near and far for global direction)

Good advice, Simon. As a beginner in my 40's, I want to get in as many training miles as I can on trails, but often need to balance that work with lower impact gym cardio so nagging issues don't turn into full-blown injuries and I can keep coming back each day. I also make sure that I'm doing strength work that complements my running and the weaknesses I expose (e.g. glute medius) as I increase duration and frequency of runs.
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon День назад
Which is totally fine. The only thing to be careful of course is that trail running does require more ankle strength because you aren’t running on even ground. But I hear you. Exercise on like those half medicine ball probably help for this (haven’t done myself but it’d make sense) For me the limitation which makes me have more limited trail miles than I’d want is simply time. I can rarely spend more than 1 hour all included training. Even weekend I can rarely put more than 2hrs ish. So even if it’d take 2x20min to reach a good trail (or more) - that’s limiting total mileage I could reach.

Great video, Simon! I definitely agree with your point about practicing on different types of surfaces and trails, to train your brain to see the hazards quicker. I remember when I first transitioned from roads to trails, I used to catch my toes on roots and trip on rocks quite regularly. I also liked your comments about 'pacing for the conditions' and priorotizing safety (over speed) in those moments you aren't 100% comfortable and confident.

I have done most distances of triathlon, from sprint to full iron distance. Running was always my weak link. Now I'm a trail runner exclusively. The main difference I found was triathlon has a high level of snobbery and exclusiveness. If you don't have the best kit, best bike, etc you aren't really one of "them." Trail running, on the other hand, is full of misfits, weirdos, and people out to have fun and test themselves against themselves. Trail runners are much more cool and open to newbies 💖

I had felt that difference myself even when comparing tri vs gravel. Gravel riding, I was riding my big and heavy MTB. And instead of looking down on me, folks were much more likely to cheer and realize that - dang dude, how can you keep up with us! (In a good way - like wow impressive performance!)!

@@ArcaneSpells But to be clear, the Zion course is not in Zion. Vacation race always do that - which gets a bit confusing. Like Bryce Canyon was not in Bryce Canyon, etc. But it's nearby. For Zion, because of that, it's outside the valley - which is more like mesa and desert. It's cool, but very different than Zion proper. Zion National park used to be one of my favorite - but that last few times we were there, it had changed. We never got permit for Angel Landing (despite applying like 9 times). The narrows is always closed when we go. And observation point from the valley is closed. That really left limited options....

@@runningwithsimon thanks for clarifying, that makes more sense! @runningwithsimon 2 дня назад
I have one. Which although being very basic (I think I only go through 5) is actually meant to be about keeping it balanced. The best strength routine is a strength routine that covers the key muscle group, but is also short enough for you to do despite being busy. Twice a week is plenty for me (and honestly more than typical). You can of course switch it up too but aim for same muscle group and don’t skip core. I might make another one eventually because there are a LOT of good exercises. But you can’t do all. If I remember correctly, in the comments there were some solid suggestions too so worth reading. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dctqa_NFb2w.htmlsi=5ybf6cwWJooF6teC

This was great, thanks! A fresh take on an old topic. And if you're not "good enough" to do it, who is!? 😂 I hope Nora is healing up well! In the Northeast, I've got 2 options- flat as a pancake and groomed, like a rail or town trail... or technical ankle eating mountains. The mountains are far more fun for me, but having spent many hours in PT with bum ankles since I was a kid, I'm on the cautious side. The best thing I can recommend is like you said... practice. The more time spent, the better, stronger, and more confident we get. I can't wait for the upcoming video!

It’s good to see you back by the camera and giving back to the community. The 2 things i would add are 1) find a running partner or join a trail running group, particularly if you’re training on unfamiliar terrain; that way, if something happens you have some measure of support and it will make you a better runner too ; 2) invest in the right pair of shoes; shoes designed for road running lack the support and traction you’ll need out on the trail and the right shoes will help avoid injury and will make your experience better out on the trail. It takes a little time to find what works for you but the payoff is great; I would also suggest chest that carrying a small first aid kit and a trail map are invaluable tools for your safety and peace of mind Simon hinted at this in the video and it’s sound advice!

pro means doping, thats in every sport. when your mortgage payement is dependent on your ability to secure sponsors and therefore top performance,s doping is on the table. especially in a sport with 0 doping control and big purses. people should not naive about this
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon 2 дня назад
True and I’ve been meaning to cover that some day in a video. I think there is absolutely no question that there is at least some doping in trail and ultra. And not controlling much (there is some control but not much) is enabling this. Pressure to perform to get paid incentivizes. The real question for me is how much. Everyone? Many? Some? A few? Because it’s not zero - but is it so bad that you HAVE to dope to be competitive? I’d like to think no. But I don’t know of course. At least although it’s paid, level of salary are nowhere near major sport like NBA, NFL, soccer/football, road cycling. But anyway, people would also dope for ego. So money incentivize but isn’t the only factor sadly.

I'm a top Wikipedia editor. I'm concerned about the content of Wikipedia. I'm entirely new to this story. Is there something incorrectly reported on any Wikipedia now? Please let me know and provide proof. In Wikipedia we rely on what are called sources; news articles written by credible journalist, in this case actual race results. If there is anything I can do to correct the articles.
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon 3 дня назад
I'm not aware of anything factually false necessarily. And I can see that a section/sentence was added covering all of this, so I assume someone did go through and correct. It's all good. I suspect in fact some editor on wikipedia, after trying to resolve the issue more privately but seeing new account being created to go around this, decided to leak the story. So all good. Since you are here, I do have a question. Doesn't Wikipedia conflict of interest policy state that you can't create a page about yourself or someone close to you? My understanding is that the page was created by herself so that's already a bit of a red flag. For example, I don't think anyone neutral would ever discuss her master project. She isn't particularly known in science - she's known as an athlete. I don't even see any first author publications. So although she helped on some research project, it's a bit of a stretch to consider that a meaningful contribution to science deserving mention on wiki. Also the link to "her" pubmed publication is off - if you take time to look it up, it mostly brings up publications that aren't from her. Her papers are already referred one by one anyway, so not sure why you'd bring an overly broad search query of pubmed. Also the statement "Herron and her husband manage an online coaching business" seems to be self-promotional to me which I would have imagine to be against the policy of wiki.
@torunit4620
@torunit4620 3 дня назад
@@runningwithsimon One would assume someone with the username of runcamille would be her and that is the user that wrote the majority of the initial content. This sure looks like self promotion all right. And you're right, that is against policy. Other editors did clean out some unnecessary promotion but the article is probably littered with them. Another editor temporun started in 2016 with a lot of the same style, promotional, personal content. Holy shit, I even cleaned up this article back then. And I know a couple of other editors who did some clean ups. But nobody noticed or got suspicious until February this year. A lot of junk got removed. temporun got blocked and now there were other single interest editors blocked as evading blocks. This is classic fraud. She does technically qualify for an article but this looks like she wrote the whole thing over the course of almost a decade.

My tip would be to pick up your feet, especially when going downhill. Ruth Croft calls it the “unicycle”. David Roche calls it “prancing pony”. It’s not high knees like. It’s about getting your heels up when your foot leaves the ground. There are running efficiency advantages, but for me it helps keep the stress off my hips as the trajectory of the foot is improved. And it reduces tripping.
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon 2 дня назад
For sure, no question. Very good tip. The issue comes for many once you get to 10-20hrs, your gait becomes lazier, just like your focus. You don’t lift as much unless you notice a hazard. And you miss that small rock. Staying vigilant and like you said trying by default to lift more.

I think they are both very difficult but for very different reasons. Training for Ironman feels like having a second job and it’s a little less accessible because of the financial aspect. The mental toughness is there for both but, like you mentioned, with IM you’re not going all night. Ultra feels more laidback and natural to me. Maybe because you spend so much time in the woods. I enjoy both. I find the culture for both are very accommodating and helpful. I have given, and received, help from other participants in both disciplines. Maybe it’s because I’m closer to the back of the pack than the front but in my experience, the people I meet in both disciplines are just competing with the person in the mirror.

Glad people were helpful. And to be clear, I'm not saying that nobody would help in IM and that everyone will help in trails (I guess I did phrase it more in absolute, which is not my thinking so my bad) - more that I felt a trend that way. The second job thing is so real. But it's like having a second job - and except of being paid...you pay for it! But it's of course a nice sport that many enjoy - otherwise it wouldn't exist.

I hate this topic is getting so much coverage... it contributes to the gross branding and sponsorship infiltrating the sport. The one where co-workers ask what your doing this weekend, you tell them, and they think there is something wrong with you.

That’s fair. And that’s why even if things have progressed (loss of sponsor, Camille statement yesterday evening) I’m NOT planning to cover it more. I recently tackled my first 50km ultra trail after having completed a 100km road ultra marathon. Since I had already run a longer distance, I felt confident going in… Big mistake! 😂 Turns out trail running is a whole different beast! Even though the trail was considered easy by most standards - especially in Singapore, which is mostly flat - navigating rocky paths, mud, puddles, and slippery grass was a completely different challenge… especially with the heat and humidity here 😅 It was much more exhausting than I anticipated. I felt drained and moved at a snail’s pace, but my main goal was to avoid falling - and I’m happy to say I didn’t! That was a win for me, even more important than my (poor) finishing time. I can’t even imagine what something like the Tor des Géants must be like. It’s got to be super brutal on the body! Such moments are excellent sightseeing opportunities in the beautiful environment where those runs happen.

100% especially in some terrain. Like for example racing in the US east coast is very taxing mentally exactly for this. I can remember Midstate Massive 100 in particular I was just sooooo tired of having to be careful. Same with Quebec Mega Trail 100 (QMT100) earlier this year.

And the tripping is sometimes as often as every 20K on ultras. It takes a lot of energy in the end 😀 Its usually because I'm pushing myself to much and correlates to my brain getting tired AND a tendency to drop a little on left foot, not lifting my toes as much as my brain thinks I do. And then those pesky small rocks that are stuck in the ground or more often roots, really becomes a challenge.

Do i just keep racing the same races but focus on time? Do i go farther in distance? Do I give up the longer distances and just have fun on shorter races (my favorite distance is the half marathon)?

Congrats - that's great!!! I guess that was a bit the question behind the Ironman vs. Ultra. It's very personnel, and imo it's about what your goals are (fitness, fun, and/or adventure?). For me, the variety of doing trail race is what keeps me coming. Different races = different course = different experience. Some I love enough to repeat (e.g., Zion), others I'm glad to do once. It was nice, but no point repeating, would rather do another. But I understand your limitation. Going further in distance was nice - I'm glad I did it, and will repeat. But if time is a big limitation for you, 200 miles is really cumbersome (taking the full week). That's why for me 100 miler is the sweet spot. The perfect weekend adventure, filling it to the brim, but not spilling over which allows me to keep working without missing a beat. I'd personnally rather do different 100 miler than going up distance. But it was really fun - tor des geant is my favorite racing experience by far.

This year, I was very short on time to train and money to race. I focused on the hardest races I could, nearby and affordable. When I really looked, on Facebook, ultrasignup, etc, I made a list of races that sounded cool. Relays, obstacles, hill races, etc. I wound up doing the "hardest" races I could find. The hardest 50k on the east coast, the hardest half marathon anywhere, and there's a few brutal very technical half marathons coming up. Races I wouldn't have even known about if I'd kept my filter on normal settings. It's amazing how they've improved my fitness and trail ability, and I'm only sightly stiff the next day! I love races, and have a short race season in the northeast, so I can now fit in fun, challenging, but short and affordable races every 3-5 weeks. Best wishes!

Good stuff in this video, even for those of us who have been running trials for a while. I have found that tripping, especially when tired, over those little "toe-knockers" are my nemesis...and also happen to me on uneven sidewalks (complete with epic face plants).

Do you recommend speed work like tempo/intervals for ultra training?
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon 3 дня назад
I do, yes. The back to back long run is still the most important piece (did you see my video about training plan?). And strength sessions. But it can help a little. Made a very basic interval video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fi7SXN4MQpo.html

Awesome video, thanks for sharing! I’ve been trail running for about a year and just ran my first ultra (50 mile) a week ago. I was super happy with finishing, but I’m now dealing with IT band syndrome in both of my legs. If you haven’t already, I would be super interested in watching a video about maybe some stretches/strengthening that help common injuries like ITBS in novice trail runners. I’m eager to get back to full ability so this info would be super helpful! Anyway, thanks for all the awesome content you put out there!
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon 3 дня назад
First - congrats!!! :) And bummer about ITBS. I'm not an expert / PT - can be worth consulting especially if it drags / doesn't improve by itself. Or if it's recurring. I've only had it once myself and it was after a race with a lot of ups and downs. Curious if that was the case for you too? Any, short term yes, rest, stretch. Long term, strengthening exercises. Of course there are things you need to 'check' sure to solve at the source - proper shoes? Gait? Slow build up? Etc. But considering it happened in a race, and you completed, it suggest you may done things right. Which is why, without knowing more, I lean strengthening, which is anyway necessary. You'll find a bunch of exercise online for this specifically (again, no expert anyway so I'm sure you can find better info than what I can say)

Where do you send your Coros for repair after 2 years if you get problems? There’s nowhere you can send it, you have to buy a new one. Garmin you can send in for repair after many years. I have a Coros Vertix 2 with a broken button and Coros won’t repair it!

@runningwithsimon

Yes exactly. I think what they did now and more broadly the overall behavior is bad - but for me the bigger issue is not about her but where do we want to go with this sport?
@alylipari9886
@alylipari9886 4 дня назад
Yes completely agree! You really summed up what I was thinking. Also, the negativity towards her kind of bothers me. She was wrong, and has/ will have professional consequences from this. But I'd like to see a little more focus on all the good things happening in trail and ultrarunning. I've also seen a lot of ugly things from people condemning her and the whole thing just brings us down. Love the rest of your videos too- great job!

Yes, it's easy to become an angry mob with pitch fork. I was discussing in another comment the question of "does the punishment fits the crime". It's hard to say. You can think the behavior was crappy, both this and more broadly, but then what? What do you do? What is the right consequence to match this? But they certainly didn't help themselves with the statements they released. I think people want to see an apology, accountability, and vowing to improve. Denying just really get people upset.

Hi Simon! I completely agree with you: it’s the responsibility of sponsors to help preserve the true spirit of ultra running 🎯. While performance is important, the community spirit is what truly makes the sport special 🏃‍♂️ Courtney Dauwalter is a perfect example of this. She’s not just admired for her incredible achievements, but also for her down-to-earth nature and connection to the ultra running community ❤. That’s why everyone loves her - plus, you’ve got to love that her idea of a recovery drink is often a well-earned beer! 🍺🍻

Exactly! And I'd typically much rather spend time talking about these many positive example. So many come to mind - Courtney is the obvious but there's many other that I have only positive things to say about. Both their image publicly, but also from having interact frequently with several. I'm not so close to the pro scene (...I'm a tiny bitsy too slow haha) but here and there.

IMO. And I’ll have to do a video on this as well. But it goes like this from level of hardness. Marathon, half Ironman, 50k, Ironman, 50 miler, and so on. The Ironman isn’t even close to being on the same level of a 100 miler.
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon 4 дня назад
Very interesting! I hadn't considered ranking like that but it's a smart idea. I think for me I'd say HM -> Full M -> 50k --> Half IM -> 50M -> IM -> 100k -> 200M -> 100M (but that's just me, and I know some people will have a stroke reading the last 2 entry...which isn't a typo) But I'm a very bad swimmer and decent runner which I suppose skews things to the right. But I suppose it also very much depends on the course - I know 100k that are harder than some 100M, so I'm sure there are 50k I've consider harder than half IM.
@Bo-Bland
@Bo-Bland 4 дня назад
@@runningwithsimon Thats interesting. I could be persuaded to put the 50k and the half Iron as equal in difficulty. But we both agree that course difficulty can change all that very quickly. So, for this ranking I'm going with your basic 50k, nothing crazy. for the ironman and the 50m again it's a toss-up so i could go equal in difficulty. As for the 100m and 200m I cant say. I haven't yet done a 200. Its on the to do list for 2026. I know that100milers destroy me so I'm having a hard time thinking the 200 would be easier. Though I do understand where you are going with that thinking so I'm going to have to get back to you on this one.
@runningwithsimon
@runningwithsimon 4 дня назад
@@Bo-Bland At least for the two 200M I did, you had such a comfy buffer regarding cutoff that you have time to take care of yourself - which makes it a bit more sustainable. If you struggle, I could always take a nap. And even sleep 2-3hours without even having to think about cutoff. That's a style that suits me better than always looking back over your shoulder and having to press on even if you know a break would be helpful physically.

I feel like Herron has been maybe after some sponsorship deals and was worried the sponsor were looking for other athletes too. Then again, you see this kind of elitism in every sport, even in smaller local circles, someone gets noticed about their achievements and suddenly they just keep glorifying themselves endlessly and downplaying others. Some humans just are like that, and it's sad. Especially when people start downplaying achievements of other athletes, some who are very new into the sports and saying that 50K is not ultra, and there was too much gravel roads of surfaced roads, so it really wasn't a trail competition etc. Just keep running, and if you happen to get the opportunity that you become sponsored, don't start pissing over everyone else. Rather try to get other athletes sponsored too.

Sure but I think the bigger issue here is about pushing down others to elevate your own status. And if someone goes through the trouble of doing that (anonymously) on wikipedia for years, you have to ask yourself, is there anywhere else one is trying to control the narrative? Other behavior pointed out in this video suggest this is a pattern that goes much beyond wikipedia.
