I'm just your average guy that loves nerding out about anything and everything. Together, my wife Alison and I have begun making soap, shaving soap, and candles. We want to make the products that we use every single day, with ingredient lists that make sense, scents that you love, and sell it all at a price that you don't have to find a reason to justify. I hope to some day be a one stop shop for all your self care needs, and it starts here, with you all on RU-vid.
Thanks for coming along for this ride with me!

Great review. Just got my Timeless Slant today. Just a quick question about the loaded edge profile. I assume it should look like it's off kilter because of the nature of the slant.
What a great razor. I hope you enjoy it! Seeing a slanted blade takes some getting used to, but the gap should be even across the entire blade edge. Though it’s slanted, the normal things to look out for still apply. Have never had my timeless slant misalign the blade in any noticeable way.
@@ColletteClassic I appreciate that. How much do I tighten the handle. It's hard to know with the rubber washer. Mine looks like it is slightly more gap on the right side of the bar as I'm looking down from the top. The appearance is the same on both sides so it doesn't seem to be by chance. It might also be an illusion as the blade is on a slant.
@@christopheratkinson635 I can’t comment on the washer as I took mine off right away. I tighten it until it feels solid, but not cranked down. The appearance of the slanted blade will take some time to get used to for sure.
For the options get an adjustable and see what level of efficiency you like. Then buy everything that meets this criteria. My suggestion for an adjustable is a Rockwell T2 SS or the Rockwell 6S. These will last a lifetime and give you a fair amount of clarity on your level of comfort. The 6S above the T2SS. Either works for seeing which level of aggression you like. If you like a 4 plate or a 4 level on these you'd like a medium level of efficiency on any razor you want to try. The Gamechanger 84 while comfortable to some is too aggressive for others. Keep that in mind. Remember a blade that you like is a key factor also. The likes may be different on any given razor. Its a fun hobby. Just choose the adjustable first to find your level of comfort. Ive been wet shaving for 50 years so I have a good idea what works.
I do agree about the SS adjustable razor options being a great "buy it for life" option. Personally, I've come to terms with the fact that I'm simply not an adjustable razor kind of guy, but there are definitely good options out there for people! I find the Lupo .72OC and the Gamechanger .84SB to be right in that perfect sweet spot at for daily shaves. Thanks for watching and weighing in!
Super Adjustable Black Beautys , 109 & 84's have more agressive blade gaps than the slim you can find the tolerances online , i hand out modern razors to friends who start off as i get what your saying about dropped razors, good videos, for me Super trumps Slims.
This is good to know, as I never found specific gaps for the supers. I definitely find myself enjoying the super adjustable more than the slim. Though the craftsmanship of the slim is superior.
Was about to comment, get a plastic base Super Adjustable Black Beauty, then i checked your videos and you have one, Super Adjustable is my personal favourite, also i noticed in your Super Adjustable video you have less irritation, also Alum for the win.
We’ve come a long way with just about everything since then as well. I should go back to the Gillette for a week to see if I can get smoother shaves nowadays. Being forced to watch your technique while you rewatch and edit the video actually helps so much with improving.
Yaqi makes some good razors! I can’t comment on any other than the tile, but I’ve seen videos of them all, and they all seem well made. Do it up! Incoming Final Cut video… 😉
@@ColletteClassic, yep I see a Final Cut video in the near future! That being said I just used the Rockwell T2 SS for the first time with my last shave.
Ooohh I see you just dropped it! I’ll give it a watch tonight or tomorrow! Been eyeing that one myself for a long time, and I see a certain familiar soap in the thumbnail haha. Can’t wait!
@@ColletteClassic I will try the tile eventually. I have my eyes set on a slant razor still. Leaning toward the Rex Sentry. Just like you, I haven't found a bad razor yet!
The sentry has had my name on it forever now! Been deciding between that and the Razorock superslant, but if the sentry hits the scratch and dent section at Rex soon… GG! Glad to hear I’m not alone in my “haven’t tried a bad one yet” feeling. Even the cheap plastic Wilkinson sword razor shaves just fine lol.
@@ColletteClassic I never have any luck with their scratch and dents! Eventually they will have a big enough sale that I will have no choice but to buy!
@@brianconner2101 thanks Brian! Had a bit of a breakthrough with my pressure a week or two ago. I was still adding a bit of pressure all this time despite my best efforts. Feels much “lighter” now. Cheers!
That’s what I’m here for! There are other channels out there tossing specs out and doing direct comparisons, but I truly like just using a razor and talking about what it feels like. The Gamechanger .68 is a great razor, though from watching your videos I believe you would be better suited with the .76 plate OR the .68 open comb. Just my two cents! Is that a saying in Canada? I’m stoked to hear that you love the soap Chris. I did a lot to make sure it lathered up quick, was super slick, didn’t break the bank, and the scent faded quickly enough to not buy all these matching sets of fragrances.
Congrats Jake on reaching 100! And congrats to Stephen on winning the giveaway! I'm looking forward to the comparison to the R41. I haven't tried the open comb Lupo yet. I really enjoy the Lupo with the 127 plate which is permanently in rotation. I was using the barber pole on it before, but I switched it to the hollowed version which gives it a more favorable balance. The barber pole I now have on thre R41 which suits it well. I get great shaves with both razors, so it will be difficult to compare them! As far as the more expensive razors, if I didn't have them I would probably be happy with the Lupo or the R41. Even though the Blackbird is way more in price, it does give me the best shave out of all of my razors. Shane, if you're reading this, send Jake a razor so he can know what he is missing!
Thanks Vaughn! What a journey it’s been so far! Im fairly certain this lupo is my Goldilocks razor after my shave this morning, but I’ll put it against the R41 for science! I’m glad to hear it’s permanently in your rotation, as it’s definitely deserving! Maybe one of these razor companies will see your comment and take pity on my viewers 😂 they will hopefully save you all from my budget razors.
Nice shave and glad that your skin feels better again brother! It's nice to identify what we like and what we don't like so much. It's also great that we have so much choice in this hobby. Good luck to everyone participating! Cheers!
Thanks! My skin feels so much better these days. Changing from a full 3 pass shave 3 days a week, to a 2 pass shave everyday has made a world of difference. I’m not certain what it was about the shave dad razor that didn’t agree with me, but I know lots of people seem to love it and I can tell it’s made incredibly well. Whoever wins it will most likely love it!
I've never messed with injector razors before. I wish the blades could be removed for cleaning, but the convenience of the blade loading is nice. The issue of blades not going away is a worry. It looks like another product that agrees with you. I may try out a vintage sometime since they are so inexpensive!
Thanks Vaughn I think it agrees with me as well! Since you like GEM razors you should definitely give it a try! I think the worry about blades can be ignored for the most part. I mean it’s not like that’s ALL we use is an injector razor right? I bet you I’ll literally never get through these two magazines of blades lol
@@ColletteClassic I’m not shocked by that statement. Ppl say the Gem Micromatic Open comb is insane wild. When I finally used it I said “really that’s it??” I’ve used other razors that were more wild. I’m not huge on blade feel & excessive blade exposure. Yet I’ve also learned the #’s are so misleading. Only way to truly know if it works for you is to shave with it!
That’s exactly it! Everyone has said the same to me about that specific gem razor, but watching you use it made it pretty clear that their reactions were a bit overblown. I can say the same for the R41 man you should try it. I know you have plenty of handles too so you could snag just the head for like $25.
Hi and greetings from Germany 👋🏻 The Pearl Slant is an hommage to the 1930ies German razor called "Mulcuto Schrägschnitthobel" - I own two of these and I hopefully can compare these against each other soon. But you have to take care using the razor, to keep the handle straight and not looking at the razor head - else you will have a normal razorhead shave - because the razorhead is not slanted. Nice video! Greetings Christian
Hey thanks for weighing in! This is some good info about this style of razor, and I’m sure we all appreciate it. I have since, given this razor to my brother to try and he seems to enjoy it. Like you said, it’s very easy to have this razor shave identical to a “normal” razor. Thanks again!
No problem Bary! Gonna try and do these more often just to touch base with everyone. If there’s a legit topic for me to cover I’ll just make a video, so these lives will stay as a hang sesh. Have a drink with me or do whatever you want to relax, and talk about anything and everything. I hope though your day was crazy, that it was still good and productive!
I am into it, just as a daily shaver, not to take off multiple days of beard! Also, I have so many other razors that I simply enjoy more, so it’s totally fine! YMMV like you said, and I wish you luck in the giveaway. Thanks for watching!
I used to think Personna Comfort Coated, but in the Apex I find the Personna to tug a bit more. Maybe approaching a Gillette Wilkinson Sword in sharpness? I’ve also had near identical results when using a dorco right after the flydear. Sorry for the unscientific answer!
I recommend Mini-Splits. Long story short, they make the main floor of my house livable, epically in the summer. A bit of an investment but worth it in my opinion.
Any experience installing them yourself? I see you can buy them for like $500 online, whereas the heat pump and HVAC companies near me want to charge thousands for their units. I only need them for AC since we have a brand new boiler as of last year.
@@ColletteClassic I don't. I bought Fujitsu and paid for installation, my neighbor does it professionally and did my project on the side. It did not look that hard though. I probably could have done it myself. I'm sure some youtube research and reading the manual (assuming you can get the PDF online) would give you a good idea if it's a project you want to do yourself.
#keepitclassic Jake, great video regarding the Parker Slant. I never considered using a slant, but your review and description may have sold me on it! Also I just got your Citrus Basil Barbershop and Smoked Cedar/Leather about a week ago and they are the CC2 versions. I have only tried the Citrus Basil Barbershop one so far and WOW the lather it creates is so pillowy and fluffy plus cushiony on the face it is amazing. The scent is wonderful and reminds me of my Dad's barbershop when I was a kid in the 70/80s. It really makes for a great shave. Thank you! 😊👍
Love it Sam, that's exactly what I was going for! I true classic barbershop scent, with just a hint of something different to keep it interesting. I'm glad you like the base, which means you'll like the other scents as well. I think everyone should try a slant razor, and the Parker is a great place to start. It's pretty much the definition of "medium" in aggression, and it's only $30. If you love it, keep it or consider an upgrade. If you hate it, then sell it or give it to a friend. Thanks for the support, and good luck in the giveaway! You gonna go for the Shave Dad or the Gamechanger if you win?
@@ColletteClassic I would say the GameChanger. I don't want you to have regrets because of me down the road on giving away something special. 🙂 It is super generous of you to put anything up and I would be happy with winning whatever. 🙂👊
No no my friend, if you want the Shave Dad, then choose the Shave Dad! The giveaway is to celebrate the growth in the community, and as such, the winner deserves to win what they actually want!
Great Monday shave, Jake! The slant razors seem to always agree with you. I most often have to do the Gilette slide on the neck that kind of mimics a slant. I have been looking at them and still have my eyes on the Rex Sentry in the future. Today I used the Aylsworth Kopparkant with a Gilette Nacet and the cc2 Spiced Orange and Bay Leaf, which is now my favorite soap! I have been primarily face lathering and the bowl has been collecting dust. There has been debates about conserving soap with the bowl, but I haven't noticed a difference. It sucks that you can't install a window unit. Until you get a split unit, you could try a swamp cooler or a DIY ice box/fan setup. An AC unit is mandatory for Florida and I couldn't live without it! Maybe some cold drinks will mitigate the heat too. The giveaway is your discretion so I don't think it's wrong. You're giving something for free and who would or should complain about it! The subscriber count is quickly approaching and maybe by the end of the year 1k! Hope you and Alison had a great 4th of July! Have a great week Jake!
Thanks Vaughn! You're right about the slant razors suiting me well, and I think it's the same reason GEM and AC razors will suit me well. They have better blade rigidity, though the slants may have a slight advantage due to the "slice" to handle my coarse hairs. That being said, you should try the Parker Slant before the Rex. Aggression levels sound similar, and the Parker is $30 so it's not a bad way to test the waters with slant razors before diving right in like that! I'm glad you like the new scent! It's a good one, though I did pick up on the slight licorice scent you were mentioning last time xD I tossed that note right out with the bath water, so I didn't ruin it for myself, but I also happen to rank it highly. It smells great, and I nailed the fragrance load again so it's the perfect strength for me. That Kopperkant is really appealing with its lower price point, but as you mentioned weeks ago, it's on the more mild side (supposedly). It shaves smooth I imagine, but I can't help but wait until the + plate comes out for the kopperkant, or just pull the trigger on the big boi. Thanks again for all the support, and I think I'm going to stick with "giving the winner the choice" when it comes to the giveaway. I think the GC is objectively the better choice since someone can then go and get whatever plate they want, or stick with the .68p. Either way, the Shave Dad is NOT off the table, simply an option now instead of the default. Thanks for the support and I hope you did as well!
@@ColletteClassic I may try that Parker Slant before I get the Rex. As you said, $30 isn't too much to try a slant razor. I don't mind licorice, but maybe some people do 😅 I only pick it up if I do a quick whiff of the soap though so it probably won't be noticeable to most people, unless you have a dog nose like me 🤣 The base Kopparkant is mild, but the current variation on razor emporium has the plus listed and that one is the .99 gap with positive exposure. It is also cheaper since they always have codes. I can't post it here cause they may delete my message again! Well, try this split up, it 's "shop" and then the number "15". You bit yourself in the foot cause I'm sure that everyone and their mother will pick the shave dad razor 😄 Most of my immediate family was out of town so I just had some bbq and played some games haha! I respect the holiday, but all the stops are usually for Christmas and New Years!
I swear, even at $30, it's still fighting tooth and nail with my "mid range" razors. I don't know about how well it stacks up with the "premium" category, but a good shaver is a good shaver. It's ok if they do, as I have no need for the Shave Dad razor, despite it being very nice. It's just another piece of the collection to me, and I'm sure someone else will use/appreciate it more! I'll keep that in mind with the Kopparkant, but another line of thinking makes me wonder about just pulling the trigger on the ss or ti. The SS and Ti are made by Yates, while the copper, and the apex razors are all made in hong kong right?
@@ColletteClassic Yes, the Apex and Kopparkant are manufactured in Hong Kong, I think by a jewelry manufacturer. That's why it is at that price point. The Drakkant SS and Ti are made by Yates. If I compare them, the Apex wins in performance vs the Kopparkant, and the said is same for the Drakkant Ti. With each price hike, it gets better, but the value is better when going from the Kopparkant to the Apex. The Drakkant Ti was $300, $380 with the stand!
Thanks Brian. It’s been a tough battle for sure. Big gains were made when I stopped going against the grain on the neck. I haven’t seen any noticeable difference between just one or two with the grain passes on the neck though. Maybe it’ll just take more time
Great shave. Sorry, but I have to correct this common misunderstanding made by quite a few users/YT'ers.🙃 The razor is called: the Alpha Shave Dad razor / Shave Dad Alpha razor. The Outlaw razors have a competely different geometry on the base-plate. I know it's a small thing for some people, but we we don't call an F-16 Viper an F-22 Raptor even though they are both fighter jets designed by the same company. Have a great week! 🤜💥🤛
Thanks for the correction sig! I may have misunderstood it from the beginning! My initial understanding was that it was the Outlaw, but the milling process was simplified and done in aluminum. I stand corrected and am happy about it!
Tugging probably due to long hairs on first pass. Steve will be making an open comb plate soon. That should solve that issue. A very nice razor, I my opinion.
That lines up with where I started thinking out loud in the video. I would normally use either the R41 or the Parker Variant OC for this many days growth. It was worth a shot, and thank gosh I got it all off now! My skin needed it gone! Whoever ends up winning the giveaway will hopefully either not need the open comb, or will know about it and go get it. Thanks for tuning in!
My first shave with the Shave Dad Alpha went great, with a 2nd use PermaSharp, on 7 days' growth. On Sunday, I did another shave with the razor and same blade on 9 days' growth and I sliced myself up pretty good. One pass and I was done. Initially, I thought that it was because of the razor/blade combination as the razor is more aggressive than my others with its 0.70 blade gap... but that obviously wasn't the case, as I had forgotten that I had used the combo prior. It was just the blade was dead, as it was the third 7+ day shave that I was putting it through.
Wow! That’s a lot of hair to take off with that thing! I wish my experience with it had gone that smoothly. It didn't seem to make a difference which blade I used, but I will say that it was shaving pretty dang smooth on 1 day of growth. It was chewing me up, but it was effortlessly chewing me up xD The good news is, someone else will get the chance to try, and I still have way too many razors anyways! Thank you for reporting in so other people know they can get through a lot of growth with this razor!
@@ColletteClassic the Alpha is the razor with the widest blade gap, unless I use Plate 4+ with my 6C or 6S... and probably the Vector... so it has the room for more hair to get in. I got a few cuts with the Vector and my face was beet red from irritation immediately... but it was also my first time using it AND a KAI Captain.
That sucks that the razor didn't work out for you. I know you were so excited for it to be a great shave. It would be great to figure out if it might be the combination of blade gap and blade exposure that doesn't agree with your hair type? And it can't be the soap since you've had great shaves before with other razors and the same soap base. I'm probably over analyzing things and just chock it up to the fact that not all razors will agree with you. There's always the dependable R41 though! Thanks again Jake and thanks Alison for the kind gesture. I purposely waited till late afternoon for a shave knowing the package would arrive today. I'm slowly coming around on the aluminum razors. My preferences still lean toward titanium, but I can appreciate the existence of aluminum as an affordable option for the market. I say that when I shaved with a $100 aluminum razor 🤣 The no beard stance is also why I shave. You sleep on it, maybe it rubs against your shirt collar and then the irritation starts. And food particles and smells getting trapped in it that I would smell throughout the day, even if I soap it. My nose is very sensitive and the only time I had a beard was when I still smoked, since it deadened my sense of smell. The new gray hairs also 😅 I'll try my luck with a copy and paste #KEEPITCLASSIC and hope the winner will be able to get an irritation-free shave. On a side note, Timeless has a ten percent sale for the 4th of July. Maybe that titanium .95 oc razor has your name on it? 😆
Like we've said all along, your mileage may vary. It's probably a razor that works amazingly for most people, but some people just won't get along with it for some reason. This is one of those times. It's ok because I still KNOW that it's a good razor, and if I only had one razor, then I'd keep it and find a way to make it work. I don't have only one razor though, so there's no need to force the issue. I'll let someone else get the chance to try! I'm glad to hear that you're coming around on aluminum. It's still a cheap and soft metal, but like you said, it offers the chance for more people to try these ultra precise CNC machined razors that they otherwise wouldn't get to try. Like we've discussed before too, the weight is something you just get used to, which as someone who uses Ti razors a lot, you know that's true. That aluminum razor you were talking about certainly did look nice when I looked it up, but $100 for aluminum... I just couldn't do it xD I'm sorry to hear you have the same beard issues as me. It makes the skin care all the more important, and if anything it's easier to just shave it all off, then use a couple splashes/lotions. The days of washing, trimming, oiling, balming, and then constantly wiping sauce out of the beard are done for me! Good luck to you with the giveaway, and I'll see what kind of strings I can pull to make the Ti .95 happen xD Thanks again!
I haven’t used it, but after using the .84 and the .68 plenty, I can say it’s probably the ideal daily shaver plate for someone like me. Coarse hair, more sensitive skin. Not as quick to draw blood as the .84 but handles the coarse hair much better than the .68.
@@ColletteClassicvery true. I have both as well. A lot cheaper option. Well I don't know. A 6S is just a little more if you wait for a sale. But the 6S only goes to a 70 something gap. Slightly positive exposure.
Yikes I’m sorry to have timed it poorly for you! We’re still trying to figure out how to announce things like this to our email lists and Facebook while having it stay professional but not spammy. You guys get a sneak peak sometimes here on RU-vid 😊
Well crap, I ordered too early 😆 I'll pick up the bay rum eventually as well! It's a conundrum with the razor cutting you so much on the face shaves. I don't think it would be the weight because you have been using aluminums for a while now. Might be possible that the angle the razor likes isn't your usual comfort zone? On a side note, I wanted to grab a razor and reach into the screen to shave the long hair on the right side of your face! 🤣 I'm still deciding what razor to do the first head shave with, but I'm leaning towards the titanium ones. And there should be more than enough slickness with either cc1 or cc2. Not sure what that guy used to straight shave, but your soap has more than enough slickness. Maybe he was shaving with a dull razor? I'm still on the Gem razor kick and even considered doing the first head shave with it. So far I'm on eight shaves with the same blade and it's still sharp. Out of all of them, the Gem 1912 and the Gem Micromatic Clog Pruf are the smoothest with great efficiency. I have a feeling I'll buy the new Blackland Sabre coming out with the new plate system. Imagine getting 10-30 shaves out of a single blade. It might be more economical than the standard de blades. I probably would have hit the 10-20 use mark on the blade, but I have to spread the love between the razors. I look forward to trying out the new soaps, especially the bar soaps. I've been using liquid body wash for years and I'm curious if artisan bar soaps are much better. Just an idea, but maybe have some scrubs, sponges, or luffas on the site to go along with the bar soaps!
Maybe it was or maybe it was the perfect time 😉 just to clarify, it isn’t cutting me up so much as overly irritating me. You could be right about the angle, but I definitely feel that I’ve found the “sweet spot” with it. Who knows, and I suppose we’ll see in the morning! I think the lighter the razor is, the better for head shaves. Holding a heavy razor up, down, and around can definitely get to you. Seems like no big deal, and it isn’t really, but lighter is better in my opinion. I bet the gems will work perfectly actually because of the stiffer blade, and the increased durability you mentioned. I feel sometimes a DE blade starts dulling a bit by the end of a head shave. Regardless of his procedure or whatever, I appreciate his honest feedback, and won’t start being a company that hides or deletes negative reviews. We all need to know that it’s POSSIBLE to have a bad experience. Whether that’s user error, a bad product, or simply circumstance. I don’t feel the same way as him, but that doesn’t make that experience of his any less real. I’ll see what I can do with my cook and cure process to eliminate any possible issues that may have caused what made him experience that! Constant improvement is the goal! I know the hairs you’re talking about… I couldn’t stop staring at them when I was editing… yikes! Thanks for the love Vaughn!
I’ve heard about that blackland and it did look really appealing actually! It may be the route I end up going for my GEM purchase. Let us all know how it goes!
I purchased this razor for $36, which includes the stainless handle. You can't find a stainless razor at this price. Price aside, it's great. It blows a Henson out of the water. It's smooth, light weight, and it will last a lifetime. It's a great addition to your collection. It reminds me of my Yates winning razor, but that was $75.
I couldn’t agree more! I haven’t used it in quite a while but I’ll break it out here soon. What a smooth, efficient and well made razor. Can’t beat it for the price that’s for sure.
The adjustable Razors I have and I've got a bunch are not set them and forget them. Some are. Some aren't. Yeah 3.5 on the variant open comb is good but I use max setting first down pass. then 3.
Love the at Richard! I like doing that as well, but personally found myself getting nicks around my lips with the 5 setting. I don’t think it was overly aggressive or anything but that blade gap can catch everything LOL 😂 the beautiful part of adjustable is that you can use them however works best for you!
