deaffriendly is a consumer review platform for the deaf community. Our mission is to bring positive attention to deaf-friendly businesses, and corrective feedback to deaf-challenged businesses. Reviewers fit a number of categories such as: d/Deaf, DeafBlind, Hard of Hearing (hh), friends/family of the deaf and those with a special interest in creating a deaf-friendly world.
We invite you to join us in writing consumer reviews, so that we can increase deaf-friendliness in millions of businesses across the nation.
I notice how videos on this subject are ignored by most people. If it were a video on inconveniences for the blind or physically impaired there would be all kinds of views and outraged comments. But I find the disability that, I, and thousands of other people all around the world share is overlooked and even in some cases ridiculed. When I ask someone to please lower their mask so we can communicate I either get flat out rude refusal or the obvious sigh and eye roll. Even though we are deaf or HOH we all know when that happens. Thank you for making this video. I have shared it on FB. Hope you don’t mind.
I’m trying to learn ASL due to a couple of my patients being deaf and want to better communicate with them and also use it away from work as well. Unfortunately it’s hard to find resources to learn whilst working full time as well as taking college online too. I hope other technicians and pharmacists will take the initiative as well in the future to learn ASL as well
Write my questions and comments ahead of time before I enter business. I use thick dark marker on stiff pad (number the questions and leave space in between them)…always be clear on vocabulary and add detail…for instance, especially when fast food ordering, always make sure they see “plain” hamburger outline what you meant by plain… idea to leave clipboard w paper and two pens inside car and home by the doors…try to know what possible questions they may need to ask and answer them (“paying cash” or “ address/insurance info is still same”). Good to be informed customer by googling/researching and subscribing to Consumer Reports. I have more strategies in mind depending the situation. Discovered jail-type pens are smaller and rubbery so safer to put in pocket while exercising or rough play so along with mini pad good for hiking too…
Myself as a deaf person, I always ask hearing person this question “Can you read lips ?” first before that person ask that same question. That put them in their own position to say no they can’t read lips.
Transcript [Video description: an American Sign Language video clip of a white woman who is sitting in her car. She has blonde bob-cut hair and wears grey sleeves.] Hello! I'm echo I just pulled over for lunch. Where? [She grabbed and showed us the box of pizza that has a ModPizza logo on it] Mod Pizza! Wow! It's a delicious pizza place here in Seattle, Washington. Anyways, the point of this vlog, I want to share about this awesome function or feature itself that is called curbside pickup. So, this mean that I ordered pizza online and then I drove here and texted them to let them know that I'm here. And then they bring my order to my car. Wow, they bring it to me in the car. That's really awesome, because this means there would be no communication barrier due to masks. No barriers. It's very easy, and that's really nice during the pandemic to have less communication barriers. Yeah! I have to admit that I use this feature very often to order food. I often use this feature for food, I am a big food person. So... I encourage you to try that feature. If you had positive experiences, or even negative experiences with this feature, you can go ahead and write a review about it on the website called: deaffriendly www.deaffriendly.com [An animated illustration of a thinking bubble appeared on the top left corner of the video with an inner blue text: www.deaffriendly.com] You can write positive or negative about businesses there. You can let them know that you really like curbside pick up and had a good experience. I'd appreciate that! Thank you! Thank you! Bye!

This is fantastic idea. I love how you're more focused on helping businesses improve and learn rather than simply shaming them for not knowing how to help/accommodate deaf folks. I hope you're able to grow this movement and help more business owners learn this stuff

Here in Santiago De Chile recently started a project for a bank called "Intelligent Branch" with a strong orientation to the deaf-mute people. I hope to tell the end of our story someday.
In the US we do not say Deaf Mute or Deaf and Dumb anymore, just Deaf. But in other nations that may be how it gets translated to English via dictionaries made by hearing companies.
Funny, I could not hear the "ding". Music was kind of loud. I'm trying to think of specific examples of #deaffriendly businesses!! Some are #deaffriendly but #hardofhearingChallenged - they don't quite know what to do for the late deafened or hard of hearing who don't sign but voice for themselves - all sorts of fallacies about #lipreading being 100% accurate etc.
