Wait What? "Modularization of the Horizontal token authentication data system", I'm junior and it's the first time i've heard of such a thing about a token. if not, what does it mean?
I didn't either from FAANG (bezos company). But now i'm at doordash as a SWE after so many rejects after final virtual onsites. Kinda feels weird. Just keep grinding and never settle. U got it
I'm a Mexican living in Mexico City, and in my case, I do not have a college degree in CS or some Engineering career I'm in a very cool international company and I have worked for other famous. First, I joined a startup 6 years ago that paid very low. I accepted cuz I wanted to leave my house and prove myself, so I just lived with the minimum: rent in a tiny room (not a home, not an apartment, just a room with a bed, desk, and WC), healthy food made by myself. I passed hunger, illness, and loneliness AF. I was doing some full stack (jQuery, PHP, MySQL), then backend (PHP, python flask) and sysadmin stuff. Then I got paid a little more but I was used to living with minimum requirements. Then I knocked on the door of multiple companies but during the transition, American and European companies used LATAM and Indian assets instead of the ones in their country. So, even after failing the interview, I got accepted with a salary 4 times greater than my previous. I realized that living in a third-world country, I knew the same or even more than people living in 1st world countries but they got paid 4 times more; I guess of the prices + taxes + expanding culture + luxury (they don't thing their apple watch is a luxury but "necessary"). I finally joined an international company with people from Eastern Europe, the USA, India, and LATAM, and I'm an interviewer actively interviewing candidates applying from semi-senior to senior positions. I realized the obvious thing that here the salaries are lower compared to 1st world countries, and even the companies are paying us in Mexico half or the 3rd part of the 1st world salaries. So I guess is not a thing that there are no jobs, but the jobs are moving to a cheaper area. For example, here, in Mexico, a data engineer's salary from an international company is like $80 000 MXN (not USD), which, as far as I have compared in Mexican pesos, is the 3rd or half part of an actual salary in the US. The thing about this salary is that MXN 80,000 is freaaaaaakkkkiiinnnnnggggg lot for a Mexican because in Mexico you can live in a high middle-class zone, date 2 girls in their early 20s at the same time, go to a cool sports center (not too expensive), go 3 times a week to a tap room, pay Spotify, netflix, even you can buy a car in a year using your December bonus + savings. All of this with the 3rd part of an employee of a person living in a 1st world country. My assumption here is that the tech jobs are moving where the workforce is cheaper, so, now instead of having the jobs being taken by migrants, the jobs for American companies are being offered to non-Americans and they could use half or the 2/3 of the salary for operational purposes or reinvestments. Which means, you American fellas, are quite doomed because the companies from your motherland doesn't want you because they think not only you are too expensive but not more special than a smart guy in Congo or Bolivia without a CS degree in the Caltech... unless you move from your 1st world places to 3rd world places and, even with the salary reduced, you will be having way more purchase power. I mean, if this is a tendency, you'll end or homeless, or underpaid (according to your lifestyle), in a 3rd world country, doing another thing.
I failed to even get an internship 😂. I live in London UK. After trying for a year living off my savings, I gave up. I personally don't think it's the market I'm just not good enough. Currently, I am doing my pgce and qts which is basically a teaching certification. I still enjoy coding and computing and even though I a not good enough to get a job I want to stay involved with it as much as possible. Good luck to all job seekers out there.
Hey! Let me know if you need help. Fellow UW alum here, been in tech for 15+ years and have decent tech connections. 😊 Also used to run resume critique, interview skills, and negotiation skills workshops with EngSoc. I'm an admin on the KW Tech Slack so you can find me there. All the best!
Bro... you are from Waterloo... YOU WILL get an offer eventually. Waterloo are king of maths and quantitative programs. Job market is sat, but you are going to be on the top priority when it comes to job offer... unless you really F up on job interviews.
I feel you buddy! I'm looking for a new job as well. I have to say, the job market nowadays is confusing. Many companies keep outsourcing entry-level positions while desperately searching for experienced senior engineers. Don't they realize that experienced engineers don't just appear out of thin air? I finally understand what it means when they say “Outdated production relations hinder the development of productive forces.”
College is so stupid, Im already full time employed as a web developer at 20(im 21 now) and currently have 4 interviews, 3 of which are for 6 figure full time jobs. Ive literally only been coding for 2 years and im self taught. Why does anyone pose at coding doing these internships and still not get it? I have all these opportunities because I avoided the fluff of acting like a programmer at school, drinking my latte, making videos and actually learned the skills that made me desirable.
He’s probably in the Waterloo program where several internships are a mandatory component, I’m not sure if he could even graduate without doing them. They help you find placements, but most of my friends ended up in shitty companies for most of theirs: if he’s interning at Cockroach he was at least above average for the program.
man i just graduated, and have been hunting for a while lol. Market is just immensely cooked right now, after a fellowship, and 5 different versions of my resume, i got OAs lol. Yeh frickin OAs, no interview yet lol. i’m prepping for the OAs right now, and wish you the best through this process. i’m sure u will have an easier time, just don’t give up. The short term pain is nothing compared to the long term gain!
