in the early 80s, i was hungry for any electronic music. This encompassed the synth bands that were coming through and the US electro/hip hop crews of which Whodini were part of. on Whodinis Mr magics wand, From the sounds and production its so obvious its Thomas Dolby behind the music but for a long time back then I wasn't aware of the connection. My tastes are slightly more eclectric these days but for a taste of what I listened to back then check out my youtube channel .... electrozaps
Thomas Dolby is on the whole 4 album. He spent a month working. He says that Mick Jones nicked single Urges and got the idea of “Urgent.” Lange’s production all has layers of keyboards underneath all the guitars. Thomas also played on Def Leppard’s Pyromania using the alias Booker T. Boffin, as his affiliation with another record label restricted the use of his real name.
Good info thank you, if you note at the end of the link the quote " that the song is, "partly taken from the writings of Arthur Bremer and The Diary of an Assassin and mixed with a few images of Dallas twenty years ago".[2] The song is also in visual reference to the shooting of JFK. So both interpretations are correct. Thanks for watching!
One more night in the Puppet Theater… I’ve never seen anyone with this deep of knowledge of things TMDR. Thank you!! Always wondered if he did the piano part on top of ‘Friends’ (Whodini.) Love the sound of Fairlight music. Jane Child, Naked Eyes, Gabriel. The sound is so clean and aggressive!
Excellent analysis of the albums and showing the love for the music. I’m a big fan of both Dolby and Prefab Sprout. Looking forward to catching Dolby in London later this year at the O2 Shepherds Bush!
You're wrong on fairlight earliest usage on records , first ones were the Steps by visage( intro) 1980, David vorhaus white noise 3, the korgis everybody gotta learn ( koto sample 1980) and Kate Bush babooshka ( glass sample)
This is stunning what a set!! You and Grand Central have been a huge influence on my music taste growing up thank you so very much for everything you do 👌🏻👏🏻
I was 16 in 1984 when Paris Texas came out and was totally oblivious to its existence back then .. I went to see Terminator instead .. prob a good thing I didn’t see it then as I just wouldn’t have appreciated at 16 its significance and beauty I’m now the same age as Harry Dean Stanton was when he filmed this .. and I’ve just seen it for the first time … brilliant film ..
I used to love Fat City and Afflecks. I would spend hours between there and Vinyl exchange browsing through records just looking for that little gem. Sadly those days have gone and I don’t find scrolling through Spotify has the same feeling attached. Kids won’t ever really know that feeling of rushing home to play your purchase. Domino - ghetto Jam, YBT - Tap the bottle, Silvia Tella - In a special Way, Father Mc, MC Lyte, Black Street etc etc. Not to mention Fat City was the first place I ever witnessed scratching live that was actually good.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iEWfgdTD_0Y.html : am I right hearing that this saxophone sample in the first sec are also from the Tom Scott sample?
Well girls, you look nice, your outfits definitely work, and your harmonies are pretty cool. My own dad played Jazz back in the 1930's/'40's and was friends with at least two of the Andrews sisters. But he died in 1987. He once blurted out that Bette Midler was far better in vocals/range than the Andrews sisters ever were. As most former musicians were rather critical of each other, I found myself wondering what he might've said about a couple of bands who've recentlyy done renditions of some of those oldies-including you all? Personally, I found your sound to be terrific with good movement. As to your audience, I kinda wondered what it's like to watch young people play the music you loved when you were young? I admit-now 65-it's kind of tough as beautiful young people kinda make you wish you could turn back the clock. On the other hand, most of us no longer wish to relive any bad things that happened over our lives. For me, aaah, dad didn't want me involved in the music business as he always said it was hit or miss and most never made it-he watched/saw/and 4-5 other careers after the war. So maybe he was right. Naturally every boy tries...to impress their dad, however, and he did hear one of my songs before he died. I'll never know if I made the right decision with my life, but I certainly wish all of you a most positive and successful career. You've got the talent, now, just work to let the entire world hear what ya got! rl
