I always make the first haul of the month my craziest. That way it will be easier to limit myself to 10-15 criterions on the next haul we're going to do.

That's an amazing favorite film. Undoubtedly one of the best films ever made. I cannot wait for Carlos to review it.

@@TheMisfitPond Japanese 9-hour long WWII Epic. Split into three 3 hour episodes. Directed by Masaki Kobayashi (Harakiri & Kwaidan) Average letterboxd rating 4.5/5. Have I convinced you enough? It’s a recent bluray upgrade for the title, it has a criterion release number that is somewhere in the 400s, too lazy to look it up. Either way. It’s a masterpiece and one of the greatest war films and trilogies ever made.

@@Tim_Raths I might check out the Paramount release of Nashville. Luckily Carlos bought me Rosemary's Baby for Christmas. La Dolce Vita is still in the Fellini boxset, and I'm not huge on Don't Look Now or Days of Heaven. I know. Hot takes. I do love Harold & Maude though. I missed out on that one too.

I have seen over 200 criterion films, and I watch criterion films all the time so I never have to blind buy again.

There’s films that I’ve seen on criterion that I choose to take a pass on for a blind buy cause I’m psychotic.

Saw it last year! Very good, although my least favourite Mungiu movie for now. I think Graduation and 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days are stronger. To me, it feels a tad bit too long, but beyond that, it does everything else amazingly.

Ty so much for subscribing. I own Midnight Cowboy. It is one of those films that made me want to become a film critic. It really shaped my taste in films to this day.

@@JavaJunky I don't budget. We're doing multiple hauls this month. I just make a list of 30 must owns for the month of July. I knocked out half of the list in this haul.

I try to limit myself to 5 every haul.. key word “try”. i might end up blind buying a lot of stuff during the next haul

@@jesusperez7108 Been some time since I've last seen it. The trailer is pretty bad. Then again, a lot of trailers from the nineties, particularly for "indie flicks", are bad, and often misrepresentative of the overall tone of the movie.

@@UToobin75 Honestly I'm not huge on movie trailers. I like to go into films blind. All I need to know about the film is writer, director, and production company.

@@jesusperez7108 I recently watched some trailers from smaller releases I remember fondly, movies which haven't made the transition to Blu-ray, films like Dominick and Eugene (1988), Hangin' with the Homeboys (1991), Smoke (1995), Box of Moonlight (1996), and Tree's Lounge (1996) to name but a few, and came away thinking that the trailers made these otherwise good movies look bad. A byproduct of the era I suppose.

@@UToobin75 I agree. Trailers from the late 80s through the 90s were especially bad. A lot of indie film companies just don't know how to market their movies. Even A24 struggle with marketing their films unless it's a certified banger like The Lighthouse or Uncut Gems. Little off topic, but Box of Moonlight is such an underrated film. Turturro and Rockwell have such great chemistry in the film.

I own 109 criterion films, and I have only been criterion shopping 5 times, so I'm averaging 21 films per haul.

@@jesusperez7108 maybe it's better that way. I started with Criterion over ten years ago and then recently within the last three years got into Vinegar Syndrome, Shout Factory, Kino Lorber, Indicator, Arrow, Severin and collecting slipcovers. It's can be expensive. Ugh!

Only real film heads buy outside of criterion. Vineger syndrome has best packaging next to criterion. Happy to see mike Leigh love and what a shame to say Europa by von trier is bad

I saw you buy an Ozu and a Dreyer, two of the greatest but you should try some Bresson , Mizoguchi and Renoir as well. Also, Ozu’s Tokyo Story is perhaps the greatest film ever made, a must have bluray.

@@ethanedwards7557 I want to own Pickpocket from Bresson. I still need to see A Man Escaped from Bresson and The Rules of the Game from Renoir. I regret to say I'm unfamiliar with Mizoguchi's work.

For Mizoguchi get Ugetsu. Mizoguchi made some of the most beautiful films ever made. Pickpocket is great as well as Au Hasard Balthazar for Bresson. Rules of the Game is great but Grand Illusion is nearly as good. It was the first Criterion but it’s on bluray from another label.
