I worked in a Original Hamburger Stand in Denver in 1987. We had a 1939 $5 bill handed over one night. It was in mint condition. I swapped it out and to this day I still have it in a box of stuff including Susan B Anthony coins and Kennedy half dollar coins.

was it a gold or silver certificate? did it say United States Note or Federal Reserve Note?

Exactly. There are over 1.2 billion $2s out there. There are only 1.9 billion $10s. If people just used the $2, it wouldn't be looked at as rare anymore.

I once saw a $1 bill that someone had very carefully colored all the decorative leafs on the bill. Looked awesome, kind of regret that I didn't trade one of my own dollars for it.

Obviously, we know they are not tokens, that they are indeed legal tender. However, there are almost no laws which force a business to take all forms of currency. Some states and cities have banned cashless stores. These include Massachusetts, Connecticut, San Francisco and Philadelphia as of the last I have checked, but the list may have grown since then. Now, I am unaware of how laws apply in the areas where cashless stores are illegal. Just because they are required by law to accept cash does not necessarily mean they must accept all denominations of cash. Offhand, I simply do not know the law specifically in those areas, but outside of those few places, there are no laws stating that a business is required to accept all forms and denominations of cash. Businesses outside of said areas can legally choose to implement policy that they do not accept any bills larger than a $20, nor any coin with a face value greater than 25¢, nor pennies, or if they choose, no two dollar bills neither. Now, if their only argument not to accept your one dollar coin is that it is not legal tender, and they never mention anything about their policy regarding what cash is acceptable, then I would argue nonstop until closing time if they so chose. If they merely stated that it is their policy not to accept dollar coins, then fine . . . that may suck for me at that particular moment, and I wouldn't agree with that policy which essentially is the result of laziness, but I would understand that it is their right to do so. However, if they inform me that the only reason they have for not accepting my payment is because I am attempting to pay with "funny money", then I would take insult to that, and I would stand my ground and argue the point until closing time or some other conclusion was reached . . . but I would not accept their bullshit reasoning which is based on pure ignorance, and walk away. Instead, I would defend my honor and place their ignorance up high on a pedestal, displaying it for all to see. Just because a form of currency may be legal tender, it still does not provide a legal bearing upon any business to be legally required to accept it as payment.

But yes the misconception is here rare I spend them people are like you sure you want to spend these and not keep them there rare..... The Two Dollar Bill Documentary i put $2 bills and dollar coins in the fifth slot in the cash register- Where $50 & $100 bills should go. I usually stick larger bills under the tray. The $2 bills (and dollar coins) usually go away the next cash transaction I do. I have a small collection of the bills at home from my grandma I keep as keepsakes.

Tried that - BOOORRRRRRING. The goal was to follow up, find out if they used them, liked them, etc. Everyone tries to tell me how I should have done it. I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out and the views it's getting. But thanks for commenting and knowing better

And, when people do get them, they hoard them, thinking they're rare and will be worth more someday. By not putting them back in circulation, it furthers the perception that they're rare.

they took them out circulation, back in the mid 80's ,so many younger people may not have seen or herd of them before.

I'm not sure how they are there, but in the United States they had $2 bills in circulation for a good while but took them out, then readded them around the 2000's or so and did a rerelease in 2014 or 2015 I believe. But since then it is more or less just collected than spent. We had another bill here that is even rarer, the $3 bill. Discontinued in the 1800's and never was released again. You'd be lucky to find one not in a museum at this point.

Codebreaker - do you know what you're talking about? They took $2 bills out of circulaltion in 1966, after the final print run in 1963. They re-issued a newly-designed $2 bill in 1976. There were several other printings through and including 2015. Get the link earlier in this thread and watch the film so you can learn something.

We bumped up the sound on the cashiers so they were more audible. They were NOT mic'd. The camera was a tiny handycam hidden under a sweater in thre passenger's lap. Nowhere to hook up audio. But nice assuming!
