This is the best audio sounding comparison review of these microphones I have heard. I watched at least 5 before watching this video. Each review gave me an insight to these microphones but yours is audibly the best because the sound is not processed.

The BOYA wins hands down; I felt it isolated your voice much better in the noisier scenes 👍🏻

Great job. Great great work. The Boya sounds really good. If I was gonna nit pick, you can jump right in without as much intro, just 6 seconds less maybe. Trust that the video description has done most of the work for you. Don’t take that the wrong way though. This video is saving me money so big respect!

sound waves look the same mostly, but the Boya goes from 35Hz to 18kHz while the Rode goes from 100Hz to 20kHz. so the low end is represented better on the Boya, and not many humans can hear above 16kHz. great idea btw to record both at the same time. thanks for your efforts !

There is very little difference on most situations trying to capture your voice, until you got to the subway, and then the RODE really shines, so, if you HAVE TO vlog on the subway, or even noisier places, then yes get the RODE. Perfect test you did here

I listen to both with and without headphones and they sounded pretty close imo... I'd definitely get the boya then, since half the price for same performance is really nice!

The Rode sounded a little crisper. The Boya was louder and a little more muted but in a good way. I think they both are very similar and it depended on the scene. I like that the Boya allows you to connect to a phone without buying the extra cable........especially since that cable was sold out on Amazon for over a month when the Pandemic hit.

I used the Boya as in studio boom mic when I first started my channel. Love that deep Boya rich sound.

The only problem with the Boya is the shock mount. You can hear a lot of handling sound. Other than thar, the Boya its a great mic for its price.

I wonder how these mics handle high pressure levels.

In my opinion, these mics will suit different voices. The BY-MM1 has a stronger lower-end. Chungdha has more treble in his voice, so the lower end compliments his voice. If you have a lower voice, you may prefer the Videomicro. Price makes it hard to deny the BOYA. Thanks for your review!

Chungdha this comparison is amazing. Your comparison has swung me even further towards buying one of these microphones. I am currently looking for a small microphone to use with my oppo A83 and umidigi power 3 to record video stories for the children in my school currently home learning. The oppo A83 microphone quality is good but I know it will be better with the Boya which to me sounds better because of the bass. Would purchasing the Boya be too over the top for my intended use in my quiet non dampened bedroom? I did consider a lavalier microphone but I know I will tend to forget 🤦🏿‍♂️ I am wearing it and drag my phone, tripod and light with me as I get up to go and do something else. 🤓

Rode sounds flat and nice separation while Boya sounds dull and roll off (hey it's cheaper) (Listened with Kef Space One which is neutral)

As a person who doesn't vlog but is interested in general purpose video capture, I would say that the Rode is starting to appeal to me more than the Boya or Movo

Really good test of this two microphones. It shows up the differences really well and for my case the boya is the right one, in my opinion the voice is better recognizable compared to the Rode and this seems to be related to the "weakness" of the high frequencies of the Boja mic and this eliminates the background noises a lot. Nice. Just ordered it. :-)

Interesting how people can have such different opinions! To my ears, the Boya BY-MM-1 does not win regarding the best sound when it comes to a voice/vlogging mic. For an overall inexpensive shotgun mic, the price-to-performance is undeniably outstanding, however! But for vlogging, the Rode is best as it doesn't require a lowpass-filter to gain those mid to high frequencies that are usually coveted for vlogging mics. The Rode definitely has the treble-end of frequencies covered (voice). The Boya BY MM-1 has a little more bass to my ears and more bleed from the surroundings for a directional mic. Others felt the Boya isolated your voice better in louder surroundings, but I disagree, everything was louder, including the surrounding ambiance...Good or bad, EACH is terrific for it's intended purpose and one can't go wrong with owning either. Of course, having a camera with excellent pre-amps and using better software in post can go a long way with obtaining excellent sound. Of course, if one is doing RU-vid vlogs as a living, I wouldn't recommend either as where Video is awesome, great Sound is King! Great comparison, by the way!

What mic your using for recording?

Boya is definitely louder but also quite echo-ey. Still undecided. Need a mic ASAP and Rode Micro is on sale at the moment. If anyone has some budget recommendations let me know!

Yes! The best comparison video about that topic i've ever watched! For me the Boya wins cause here in Brasil, is less than half of the price of rode video micro, and don't sounds worst, like you said, has even more bass to it, and the cable for cellphones, your review really helped it, thanks! xD

Movement makes a difference! My Boya is good when the camera is stationary, but there is a noticeable ugly noise at every step when walking/running.

I agree that the Boya has richer basses while the Rode seems to works best with highs, I think that the best for you may depend on your voice, I have a natural bass voice so maybe the rode would fit better for me since it could give me the highs that I miss.

I bought the Boya by-mm1, and I agree with you. I was fixing the audio of my camera (canon eos 80d) and our other dog barked, become +14db or more (red).

For the ambient noise I think I like the Rode more, however I think the Boya handles voices better and even seems to filter out some of the background noise, allowing your voice to stick out more.

I use a boya and it's better for a cheap mic and its usefull for my vlog

boya sounds better but from other videos it seems that boya makes extra movement noise noisy shock mount if you are walking and talking if you are not moving and it's a controlled environment boya wins hands down for such a cheap price n good sound quality

The Boya sounds better to my bass loving ears. It creates a sonic foundation for the mid to high frequencies. The Rode has a better sounding top end. But that's because it reaches 2 kHz higher. If the Boya had the same frequency top end then the Rode might need to retire. 🤗

Hey, what DB do you use at the audio setting? I have the Boya By MM1 but I don't think I am usi g the correct setting.

Well, I have less good experience with the Boya. Shockmount is way worse, it picks up too much handling noise, and when you are in motion, that is a big negative. Yes, there was a TRRS cable in the box, but in my case it was broken out of the box or not soldered in properly, so intolerable RF interference and hum. I just threw it away. The Boya also sounds too bassy to me, so I have to cut quite a bit of the low-end and boost the presence.Indoors, at my place, the Boya picks up a lot of nasty resonance, I have to cut these in EQ. On the other hand, the Rode is way too sibilant, and on my voice I have to de-ess it a fair bit. All in all, I find the Rode to be better (for my needs) and now I have two Rode VMs. But there indeed are situations and voices when the Boya wins.

I use the Boya BY-MM1 with a Sony A6500 and it is really frustrating when a shotgun mic records audio which is even 3 floors below the building. P.S The room windows were closed, no fans, no Ac and the mic was at a 1 feet distance from my face. yet the audio of children playing playing below the building was recorded as clearly as if they're right beside me. Can somebody help me with this? Do I need to make any changes in the camera settings?
