From my POV, this is what makes original magic special. I was 12 when I discovered magic. As a dorky kid from a broken home, video games were my escape from the awkward stressful time that was middle school. I was in honors classes and parents just got divorced. Didnt have nice clothes or a big house. I was the definition of a lost kid. Then some friends of mine showed me these strange cards. They taught me to play this game of unlimited options in which no two matches were exactly alike. On top of that you got to customize it to the way you wanted to play and have it reflect a small part of you. There was very rudimentary internet that very few people had so info outside your area for hobbies and collectables was scarce. The mystery was part of the magic. There was also cards worth 5, 10, 15 bucks and that was real money to a 12 year old. There was also the chase cards with the Black Lotus being the top of the mountain. At that time a beta lotus went for about 200-250 and my local store had one so the allure of staring at it in the case just added to the excitement. I made trades of things I had for magic cards as I had no money to buy besides the occasional revised booster pack here and there. I made trades for more coveted cards. Some of the best cards I had were a forcefield, raging river, and two headed giant. The feeling of owning these mysterious cards that there were only one of in my play group was incredible only topped by the feeling of playing that card. I'd sit in my room for hours listening to music and sort/build decks to try and beat my friends. Remember, at this time "nerd" culture wasn't cool like it is now so you were part of something exclusive. Then Friday night would come and we would go to Cloak and Dagger comics in Ormond Beach, FL for the greatest escape a kid could ask for. We'd talk and play magic for hours. We'd trade with other people. We'd maybe sell a card to the store for a booster pack or a dozen doughnuts from the dunkin donuts literally right next door. It was a combination of the times and the game. The lack of available info made it more magical and let your imagination soar. It was truly lightning in a bottle that doesn't happen but for a moment and those original sets are a reflection of that. The art on the cards were like songs and could transport you to that place of sitting in your room dreaming of casting a Force of Nature or Leviathan against your friends. There is no mystery anymore. If you were around for this small moment in time you were truly part of something magical. Thanks Al (RIP) and Lee for running the best card shop and fantasy world a kid would ever want to escape to.

Well said man. This is such an underestimated component to why vintage mtg has so much value. It was more than just cardboard to us 90s kids. Born in 83 and I remember my friend pulling out a craw wurm and thicket basilisk and dragon whelp and just being blown away with what this game was. Nobody had ever seen anything like it. And nobody will ever see anything like it again

I discovered magic in mid 90 with the fourth edition and ... oh man, you are damn right when you says "old magic have something special". Back in the days, the Alpha / Beta / R / UR / AN was already legendary, even they was released just few years ago. I remember as teen putting my hand on some AN card (this sets was already expensive, back in the days), making my friend jealous in the playground. I played approximately until the early 2000s before I stopped, because it wasn't the same anymore. You video really reminded me at the time when as a child I looked the card catalog on the local resseler, marveling at the slightest common. Thank you :)

Good story telling with that arc from Counterspell to CoB. Yeah, many people confuse cards. I also had that issue, then I got a bunch of old cards and learned their differences, like frames and (c) lines, essentially how to tell any edition apart. There are a few "evil" ones in niche editions (Rivals vs. Two-Player Intro, FWB vs foreign Fourth) that are very hard in some cases but there's helpful pages on the internet to check for reference pictures. Those are the top! Have experience and reference cards to compare to. The only way to learn. Be a part of it.

I got into Magic right at the end of Antiquities/Unlimited so only opened a dozen packs of each but bought boxes of revised. Legends came and went so quickly that Hobby Town limited the amount of packs you could get. I loved when Chronicles came out. Anyone who was playing at that time were happy they could get play sets of older cards we only had a couple of them. Yeah many were so over printed but it was a good idea for WotC. Would be nice if they would do some kind of special printing of Legends, Antiquities and so forth on their anniversaries as collector sets. Or reprint Chronicles for the newer players to get that feeling of pulling some of those cards. I don't play anymore or collect I do enjoy watching Rudy open cards and show off sets. Makes me think of the old times and fun we had while saving a crap ton of money. I used to have to have everything. Like the Pokemon phrase I had to have them all LOL.

Your avoidance of signed cards is about to pay off, Rudy. Have you seen the videos of the Hoover auto-pen circulating? Several hundred dollars, a little practice, and it makes perfect Hoover sigs in 5 seconds. It's weird because this pen video coincided perfectly with 4 suspicious Hoover sigs on Earthbinds (CE, LEA, LEA, and UNL) on Ebay. I think there's value to old (low serial number), graded copies of cards with signatures, but we're entering a weird time.

I worked in a comic/game shop for a long time. Years ago, I had the same kid call the shop telling me about their Avengers #1. (This was long before the MCU came along. Valuable, but not crazy.) I said sure, bring it in and we’ll take a look. So when he brought it in, it was Marvel Super Action #1 featuring The Avengers. A reprint, worth only a few dollars. He was pretty bummed, but understood. But he called every few weeks with the same story, and it was always the same book. Another time, a caller told me about he MtG cards they wanted to sell. They told me some of the highlights, including Beta cards. So when that collection came in, I looked it over. Those Beta cards? Collector’s Edition. WITH TRIMMED CORNERS. We did make a deal, but for substantially less. I don’t think the trimmed cards ever sold. So yea, always see the stuff before spending your taco money, folks.

Theres something very strange to me about the set of legends... I live in Canada and I started with revised. I knew about alpha, beta, unlimited, antiquities, Arabian knights and legends. But heres the weird thing. When I started buying packs to collect revised set. All the stores I went to were selling revised, The Dark, and Fallen empires at the time. Noone was selling packs of alpha, beta, unlimited, Arabian knights, antiquities, or legends. The key word here is (legends.) Every time I saw a legends card. I thought to myself. Oh that's one of those older sets... that not many people have. Cause nobody here had em! No stores here were selling them at all... Only one guy I knew that ran mtg playing tournaments in my city had the complete set. And he had the complete set of everything. Alpha beta ect. And to me he was an mtg god. I had collected full sets of everything from revised up to visions by buying packs and or trading. But only had been able to trade for a few legends cards in all that time of collecting. And then only recently I learned, that Legends was launched... AFTER, revised! I'm like WHAT?! I sold my collection around the time visions came out. But legends was so rare here, almost nobody had em, and no stores here were selling packs in all those years, Which led me to beleive it was a much older set, printed way before revised. Was there a mistake in mtg history here concerning Legends release date? Or was there a low print run actually sold to Canada at the time? Cause I'll be honest. I can tell you the casting cost, the color of the card. And what the picture looked like of most cards ever printed from alpha up to at least ice age. But with legends, with the exception of the most popular ones. I'm left clueless for almost all of the set. Almost like it didnt exist here in Canada.
@trexasaurus5322
@trexasaurus5322 2 года назад
Legends was sold after revised was already released, but the print run was very low (compared to revised). My dad played in 1994 and his first set was revised, but he said the same thing as you, every store sold The Dark, Revised, and Fallen Empires. We live out West in the US and it was still difficult to find legends. Not only was it a popular set, but the low print run and high demand made it almost impossible to find. Even ABU was impossible to find back in 1994 because everyone wanted it. I hope this gives some insight. Edit: revised print run is around 600 million. Legends print run is about 35 million. This means there's about 289,000 of each rare in revised that was printed compared to Legends, which has about 17,500 of each rare printed.
@madjoe8622
@madjoe8622 2 года назад
I am pretty sure A, B, UL, AR, AQ and legends boosters were never distributed in Canada, I started playing in 94. Never saw them. Still, I saw a shop selling legends booster 35$ in Montreal in 95. But it was probably an import. Everybody that had "big cards" (including me), were getting them from the US. We were buying them from news groups on the internet (I was in a University). Ah the good old days.

Curious question I don't know if you've made a video on this topic before but as I understand you don't grade cards in general anymore. But as somebody who collects most TCGS what benefits do you get from buying a collection of raw cards rather then owning a few PSA 10's that are worth 20 - 30k that will be easier to store & unload in the future. Going based off the Pokémon community it seems like the grading card market is the best route to go but it also seems like its a very over-saturated market especially with modern, Vintage also is over-graded. Is it more beneficial to own these cards raw rather then grade them over time?

When you're buying at 60 cent on the dollar you don't get to choose. You can only buy what they're willing to sell, and it's going to be stuff that's more work to move. it probably does suck for an investor now a days for mtg. GOOD. its a GAME. people shouldn't have to scramble and clamor just to put a deck together like back in the day. Cards should be printed so PLAYERS can enjoy them. go buy sports cards if your trying to collect, because we are trying to PLAY a GAME. i'm sure 99% of your viewers are specifically collectors so this may be falling on deaf ears(after all, im only 75% player, and 25% collector), but i'm SUPER glad they are printing cards into the ground, and players should be as well

How wotc does it now is more lucrative. They print and keep let's say 50% let stuff sell out MSRP goes 200% and they sell off a small amount via Amazon

Can someone explain how those really unplayable "iconic" cards grow in price? Is it just sellers buying from sellers? Because of course you can collect, but there's always more interesting magic cards to collect as well. It doesn't make sense to me.

I'd say if you love the artist, or just love the card that artist created for and you want it signed because of those reasons go for it. If your plan is to have a bunch of signed cards to gain monetary value on the cards then you're doing it for the wrong reasons. Just my opinion.

sometimes especially when I hear people with tons of no problems and want things to just keep getting more and more expensive I just think maybe that ww3 wouldn't be so bad after all, I know I know I went and touched some grass even talked to a few random strangers as well today but damn sometimes I wonder who is really out of touch is it me or is it not me. I mean at some point do people with access to large sums of items with no real monetary value think everything they have will sell at infinite amounts of money? cause man I know a ton of people and very few of them like 1 could pay the prices Rudy feels his stuff is really worth. how many people all of whom are only rich on paper mind you afford buying this stuff in 50 odd years when most of it (if it lasts that long) will probably be worth billions I mean I'm sure it will be nice siting on mountains of billion dollar (or maybe even trillion dollar) card's, how many people will there be in 50 oddish years who will be capable of buying a single gamecard for a billion bucks? how many of them would be willing to spend a trillion or ten on a low maybe mid tier deck? man all I know is this all makes zero sense, good luck Rudy. I'm really just thinking out loud as to how all this will work when most of us here will likely be long gone, problems for the next generation I suppose.
@uthmanibn-jafar1159

You think WWIII wouldn't be so bad because people want their collectables to increase in value? What??? I'm sorry, but you need help dude. It is NOT normal to be that envious. You're basically saying you'd rather see the literal end of the world than see people who are more financially successful than you. That is batsh^t crazy. *"I mean at some point do people with access to large sums of items with no real monetary value think everything they have will sell at infinite amounts of money? cause man I know a ton of people and very few of them like 1 could pay the prices Rudy feels his stuff is really worth."* What constitutes "real" monetary value? Because if you want to go down that line of logic you could essentially argue that almost NOTHING has "real" monetary value. Also, nobody has ever said that collectable items have no price ceiling. So i don't even know where you're getting that. You might not know anyone who can afford buying this stuff at these prices, but there are TONS of people who do. The number of people who want these cards (and can afford them) far outpaces the supply. *"how many people all of whom are only rich on paper mind you afford buying this stuff in 50 odd years when most of it (if it lasts that long) will probably be worth billions"* Lol so all rich people are only rich "on paper", whatever that's supposed to mean. So if no rich people are actually rich, than what does it even mean to be rich? Can you explain that? Again, this is all just jealous talk from someone desperately trying to bolster their self-esteem by telling themselves these nonsensical lies about how rich people aren't "really" rich and high-demand vintage Magic cards aren't "really" worth money. *"how many people will there be in 50 oddish years who will be capable of buying a single gamecard for a billion bucks? how many of them would be willing to spend a trillion or ten on a low maybe mid tier deck?"* A billion dollars? Dude... just stop with the childish hyperbole. It's embarrassing. Over 90% of the people who buy these cards are collectors and investors, not players. *"I'm really just thinking out loud as to how all this will work when most of us here will likely be long gone, problems for the next generation I suppose."* What problems is this causing the next generation? You mean the next generation who plays old school or legacy format Magic? You can't even play with most of these cards outside those formats, and I seriously doubt that you play either of those formats. There's commander, but that's not even a big deal because you can only have one copy of each card and you don't even need these to play. Based on your comments you also most likely don't even collect these cards. So why on earth do you have such a problem with this? There's only one plausible answer. Envy and personal animus towards people who are more successful than you.
