Hey mate, huge fan of the channel! Been watching all your starlet videos, but can't seem to find which gearboxes you recommend using for boosted starlets. Just wanted to check before I go and spend $1200 on a sportive 6sp. Keep the starlet videos coming man, I love em they have really helped me with building mine.
Hey sportivo arent even remotely similar... Shifter arms are in the wrong spot meaning factory cables wont work. The sportivo boxes also run more splines in the diff centre meaning your starlet ones wont even touch the sides. Buy a c52 out of any FWD AE- 90s corolla. Easy identification can be found on the build plate on the firewall. You can pick one up between $100-$400 Swap 4e starlet bell housing and youre good to go If you can afford it, buy a cusco or a kaas LSD while the gearbox is apart.
I was lucky enough to get my hands on a c52 with a factory helical lsd in it. Not something I will ever part with as I have never seen another come up.
If you ever get the opportunity to sell it for over $1500 bucks, get rid of it, but a stock c52 and put a good cusco or Kaas LSD in there. 10x better than the helical ones
Basically this cheap system is not gonna ruin the gearbox? What about the thing that I heard that if you lift the wheel on a turn it’s going to smash the plates?
i got my glanza in Canada with a 5 speed swap, (auto on build plate) and i always assumed it was swapped with a factory c56 the glanza came with, how can i tell if it could be a c52? also how come everyone uses the c52? just easier to find nowadays? (i thought the c56 had better 3rd and 4th gears)
The springs only hold the plates in place, it doesn’t actually do anything else. Someone left a comment on one of these videos of mine explaining it and it makes sense. The pin that goes through the diff centre to hold the gears, when you accelerate, that large pin contacts the plates and forces them apart, causing the lsd effect.
@@MattBerrymotorsport I thought they still had a very minor load, and Phantom used to (maybe still, idk) offer a "racing" spring pack' Your comment made me think, the hole halves for the center pin are ramps. Like clutch type limited slip differentials! That means the ramp angles can be tweaked, for more lock during accel/deceleration! so...if you're interested, just file off those corners. make the holes look more like diamonds.
ur like rob dahm (I think I spelt his name right), where he explains what he does in his video and works on his RX-7, and does all his work himself instead of taking it to a shop to fix it for him.
Hey Matt do you know how to identify the C series transmissions? i got a 4efte recently with a 5speed but cant see any markings to identify the trans. any help would be appreciated buddy 🙏
if its got a black steel end casing its most likely a c150. If its got an alloy end casing its most likely the stock c52. If not its still the strong c52 internals
the reason 5th failed is lack of oil... the side gears were fine LSD has a very small amount of wear, can feel it with your nail. Otherwise dont forget the gearboxes have a magnet in there, it will catch any metal thats getting around

i was actually very surprised the inside of the box wasnt worse for wear... i think that just having the oil level correct would have made a world of difference, not to mention 5th gear would probably still be working....
Sheap lsd 😁, if you want a litle more pover na-Starlet ..get better mufler... and if want more mm.4afe 4-2-1 orginal exhaust can mod to 4efe...😉.. and org.pipe is too small..i drive 1/4mile n.16,7s.😁.. 3 sek. Faster than Orginal ??? ( okay ported head, more pressure na, ,)
Unfortunately the results of this video are not really helpful because you didn't keep up on the oil level and condition. Once you discovered the leak you should have changed the axle seal and made sure the fluid level and condition was good and then we would have a better indication of how it held up.
Just a quick question is the c150 box the one they use in an normal 1.3 2e ime having problems of breaking spider gears on my 4efte starlet with a 2e 1.3 carb gearbox ime from south africa so not easy getting proper starlet parts. And is the c52 same as a 4afe 1.6 gearbox please want to sort this issue out and enjoy the car
