Who in the world would throw away that PC? An Optiplex 3040. i5-6500. 8 GBs of RAM. I would have simply used that same cable, and plop in a Sapphire RX 580. Add a cheap SSD, and you got a console killer.
@WiltshireTutorials
@WiltshireTutorials 5 лет назад
People who don't understand how valuable those parts are, that's who! With the 240W PSU in a 3040, you may pull too much wattage with an RX 580. Maybe with some undervolting you could make it work. It would be a close call, that's for sure! I am planning a follow up video in which I upgrade the parts in the 3040. An SSD is definitely on the list of upgrades!
@slayerjohn447

@@WiltshireTutorials Wouldn't the SSD reduce the overall wattage that the system would pull, allowing for a tad bit more leg room for the GPU? Or would that card still be putting the PS to the limit.
@TheGameBench
@TheGameBench 5 лет назад
The 580 pulls more wattage than a 1070. I'm pretty sure the system would just shut off from the power draw. I also, wouldn't suggest a SATA to PCIe converter with that much draw either. I wouldn't even feel comfortable running the 470 on this power supply. I'd really be interested to see what the wattage draw from the wall is.

The power supplies in pre-builts these days are no longer the ticking time bomb from a decade or two ago. Despite the lack of 80+ certification in this one, these units are able to deliver it's written maximum output continuously. My OptiPlex 7010's built in PSU is actually quite hefty and the components inside are decent. Just check if the 12V rail can handle the load instead of the PSUs entire maximum rating.
@WiltshireTutorials
@WiltshireTutorials 4 года назад
Quite true. They are better than what they were! They just don't have the power delivery. Obviously to keep cost and power consumption down. I stress tested this PSU for 24 hours on a GPU benchmark, it did fine!

Thank you a lot for the recommendation! I was about to purchase one of those 2nd/3rd Gen Optiplex which are amazing value for eSports, but I do some heavy tasking, Photoshop started to give me headaches in a damn FX 8350 (That also keeps turning off randomly quite a bit)... So I know I have to change a bit I searched, and here in Mexico, where prices are bastardly awful, was able to find an i5 6500 (With a 240gb nvme and 1tb HDD, according to the seller) and a i7 6700 (Which calls my attention a bit more for being same TDP but literally better in any other regard for my future content creation things, but it doesn't have fancy HDD/nvme (I'm still sure it's not an nvme, but rather a Sata m.2) Still, I do own my 2tb HDD and a 128GB SSD, so I have no problems! And after watching this and your modding video, I came accross the idea of doing something similar, probably one based upon a character called "Strarf" (From Busou Shinki, a lineup of Small Figures), taking consideration both PCs are SFF (Good for me, I'm moving to another country soon and would like to carry a PC for any kind of being ready of not purchasing one anytime soon). Still awesome video, and thank you very much for these videos! Just got subscribed, and regards from Tacolands!

I'm happy to hear you like the videos on OptiFlex. I appreciate the kind words as well! Seems like your FX 8350 is overheating or on it's last legs. That CPU is notorious for being a very hot chip. Personally, I would go with the i7 6700 over the additional storage. You can always add storage for cheap later on. Finding a 6700 is getting tougher as the years go on. Good luck with your Optiplex build and safe travels when you go to move to a different country! Thanks for watching and subscribing!

Definitely look into undervolting that 470. Might save that PSU from failing and it'll really help thermals (and performance) across the board, especially in a tight case with questionable airflow. Also, $400 is selling yourself short man, these builds (albeit with older gen i5-i7s) can easily be done for sub $300, especially if you don't replace the PSU or add an SSD.
@WiltshireTutorials
@WiltshireTutorials 5 лет назад
I was thinking of undervolting the 470. May do an upgrade update video on the Optiplex soon. I made the title based off of the model of Optiplex I had. It's a little more expensive than older Optiplex PCs. Would recommend the older PCs though, if you're on a budget!

You can actully upgraded the psu in this pc with a mini psu, ofc you have to make some new holes for screws and make a bigger whole for the psu backside. You also need a 24 pinn to 6 pinn that you can order from ebay. But first you need to go to the bios and select powermode or power managment and select always on. If you dont do this with the new psu your gpu will always be on full speed and no boot. And when you want to shut down the pc you need to shut it down from the psu. But it works and yeah, i took away the hard drive and cd drive so i could fit a bigger fan, i aslo made the ssd case smaler so i could fit 1 ssd. But yeah, you can deff fit a mini psu like this Cooler Master V650 SFX Gold 650W

Just wanted to drop a "thank you!" for the notes regarding power management. Working on modding a Dell 7050 MT I just got. I had returned a prior GPU thinking it was defective and got a GTX 2060 at an even lower price; it was also giving the "full fans but no boot" issue. I tweaked the BIOS and Windows 10 power settings just to be safe. I'm typing this on that Dell so yeah, this still works.

What a great find, I wish I had PCs like that lying around in my garbage lol. Surprised you made any foreign hardware fit, Dell is known to have needlessly complicated and cramped pre-built system cases(not to mention limited ports, oof on that single channel RAM), very lucky. Also, how did you mount that backplate? It looks awesome, I actually bought an XSPC backplate for my little project, cause I couldn't be bothered to make one and it was like $14US on Amazon. Your looks very slick though, great finish.

This is the second PC that I've pulled from the garbage at work lol. First one was a Lenovo with an i5 3570 in it and 8GB of RAM. I gave the PC to a friend in need of one after reviving that one too! I was starting to sweat bullets a little when I was struggling to put the RX 470 in it. I knew it was gonna be close, but not THAT close! Believe it or not, after some extensive research, I've discovered that the Optiplex 3040 I have can indeed run Dual Channel Memory! I just need to find the exact same RAM stick model that's in there already or 2 identical RAM sticks that are DDR3L! I just mounted the backplate on the GPU with some double-sided tape. Obviously, you want to get the non-acid and conductive type. I've seen the XSPC backplates before. They're not bad and they definitely get the job done for $14. Happy to hear you like my backplate design! That's automotive clear coat for you!
@DarKNesS7026
@DarKNesS7026 5 лет назад
@@WiltshireTutorials Another RAM stick could be great, but there's still only 2 DIMM slots, which isn't that great, but I guess is enough for this type of PC. Got lucky with my backplate too. It said it was for GTX 980/980Ti founders edition only, but I needed it for my two old 780's and there weren't any, so that was a gamble. Luckily, since the dimensions and screw alignments are almost identical, it fit perfectly. This is why I was considering DIYing it, but $14x2 was a way cheaper option than buying all the tools and materials to make one. Yours came out fantastic though, love the design.

It's possible with that PSU with how much wattage it uses. If you do the math, the GPU takes 110W, CPU is 65W, chipset is 8W and SSD is about 10W. This totals to 183W. Well under the max rating for the PSU. Would I recommend pushing the PSU that hard all the time? No. The cable used was 2x SATA power connectors to an 8-pin PCI-E power connector. Hi. Great video! Your video might have actually saved me some serious bucks. So I purchased a Lenovo M92P tower with an i7-3770. With the cpu and HDD stressed, I get a maximum usage of 90w. It has a 280w psu. I have an EVGA gtx 960 (2GB) SSC I want to try. It draws the same power as the rx470. So I have two issues if you can help me. Firstly, every information online about this adapter (sata to pcie) or this method seems to be negative. By calculations, I'm well under my psu max output. Not sure if people are just generally not glued up with pc knowledge (stuck in old school thinking) or if this a really very very very dangerous method. Secondly, I have 2 sata power cables, with 2 sata connectors daisy chained on each sata power. One has an optical drive (DVD) which I can easily remove, which leaves me with one proper sata power cable, then the other has my hdd. Can I use the second available sata connector that is daisy chained to the hdd to provide enough power without cables burning up. Did u face this problem? Sorry for the essay.

Hmm... the recommended specs for Tekken 7 are an i5 4690, 8GB of RAM and a 1060 6GB (or an RX 580 8GB). I would maybe go with a used pre-built PC. Such as the one in the video. You can get a Dell Optiplex 9020 with an i5 4570, 8GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD for a reasonable price. The PSU in it is 255W, if I'm not mistaken. Which would be difficult to make a GTX 1060 or RX 580 work. You could go with a 1050 Ti. It draws power straight from the motherboard. So, no PCI-E power cables needed. The 1050 Ti seems to perform really well on Tekken 7 too! Hope this points you in the right direction!

Although generally not recommended, you can use these adapter under the right conditions. You are correct when saying they can burn up because people push the adapter too far with power draw. Yes! With the 260W PSU you could definitely run an RX 470. You could even run an RX 480 for a little more horsepower. You probably wouldn't be able to overclock it though! Keep in mind the only RX 470 I found to fit was the Sapphire Nitro

The M.2 slot is for the 3050 variant, not the 3040. They made all the boards the same just without certain ports soldered on to save money. I could, in theory, solder an M.2 slot on the motherboard traces and custom flash a 3050 BIOS to the board. I bet it would work.

Hello, just got myself an optiplex 3040 after watching this video. I want to install the same sapphire rx470 graphics card, but it seems the on you installed is 10mm (230mm overall length) shorter than the gaming versions (which are 240mm long). Would you please help me verify the length of the you you installed in yours? Do you think a 240mm you would fit? Thanks.
@WiltshireTutorials
@WiltshireTutorials 4 года назад
240mm is absolutely pushing it. That was the max length I approximated when building OptiFlex. I'm not even sure you'd get the case to fold back in with cables running up the front of the PC. If you can, buy the Nitro version of the RX 470. You could find a good used one online.
@Otemaonen
@Otemaonen 4 года назад
Thanks for the quick reply. Just wanted to make sure before I order one. I'll try to get the nitro version. If it doesn't fit, hopefully, I'll be able to chip away some of the plastic shroud and wiggle it in there. I got a good deal on the optiplex and only bought it after watching your video to confirm that a full size gpu can fit in there. I couldn't find anything better (video or text), so I really appreciate your effort.

Getting the card to fit would be a challenge. Assuming that you could get it to fit inside the case, you would need to upgrade the PSU. The GTX 970's recommended PSU is 500W. That's more than double the stock PSU.
