While not the best tying vice in the world, It does work. But its really good for classrooms.

That is a great idea you have come up with! Bravo! An empty pen shaft is an excellent half hitch tool once the ink is gone! You can choose the best ones based on the size of the hole at the tip. Been using em for years! Larger ones can be used to push deer hair on spun deer hair bodies to tighten em up. Those exacto type blade holders are my go to portable vices for travel. I also put em in pieces of wood as bases! 👏👏

Great to hear that! I couldn't believe I was the only person to find the exacto knife type vice. These have been working so well. I also use a $2 wood clamp from Harbor freight to hold them to the table.

Maybe try some nonskid padding on the bottom for better grip

Thanks for sharing this. After watching numerous videos on making my own whitebass/walleye flies, I ran across your video. Saved me a bunch on a fly tying vice and I enjoy making my own things anyways. Already made my first fly with it and it came out fairly decent.

I'm working with a scout troop on the military base here doing Fly Fishing merit badge... I seem to remember that they have a great wood working shop on base... and I already have a bunch of bobbins and scissors laying around... this could be interesting.

I've used these with scout troops and they work great. It takes a little instruction on loading the vice with a hook.

This project is awesome I tie a lot of my own flies but right now I am in a rehab ( leg amputation ) and am building a file tieing kit I am 63 years old and needed something very portable. It looks like you are using 2×4 board and I am wondering if 2×6 or 2×8 would be to big I am using a large double tray tackle box to store every thing and I figure 12-14 inches long would be perfect for me. Also I tie with some very small hooks 20-22 size hooks will the collects on the handles handle that small? Please let me know. Thank You

the size of the base is only dependent on how big you want it. I pack these in quart plastic bags so is can put 20 in a shopping bag to take to schools but bigger is better. If you are just making it for yourself get the best xacto knife you can find for durability. The other tip is to put the hole for the knife near the edge of the board so you can hang the bobbin off the side of the table.

I have a couple of exacto knifes and they seem to work for #10 - 1 hooks. I even have the kids tie onto a small safety pin. Maybe you need to spread the collet a bit.
