I needed to get a set of inexpensive fly vises for a middle school I’ll be working with next year. I finished making 30 of these and all in it was about $200 with some supplies.
most were bought on amazon and ebay
updated version of this tying station • Five dollar fly tying ...
exaxto knife -$1
scissors- nose clipper type $2
Bobbin - 3 for $5
threader- made from .007 guitar strings
half hitch tool -plastic straw or hollow coffee stirrer
thread - $1 at JoAnn
Wood - 6" 2x4 one 2x4 makes 12 bases
I later added a magnet to each base for hooks

Exacto vise! I love it. I'm getting one for my truck, and one for my fly vest! What a tool for on river fixes!

I love frugality. This is a great way for people "wanting" to get started tying. If a rookie can master an Exacto knife... and if so inclined, graduation day to a commercially made vise will be all that more gratifying.

Oh my that is so simple and effective. I love it when a seemingly complex activity like tying flies can be made so simple. Gonna make this for my kids so they can tie with me for sure!

I've changed the design a bit. Move the hole for the vice part nearer to the edge so the bobbin has a little more room to hang . I just finished 30 of these and they cost $200 all in.

Sweet! Trying this out later today! 😁 I've been freehand tying which is doable but I've been wanting a small lap vise. This is amazing.

@@MikeMouradian , I just got done making My Base out of a 1x6 so it is 3/4"x5 1/2"x7" and I drilled holes 1/2" from the Left and Top edge at 1"o.c. & I drilled an angle Hole for the Exacto at 2" from the Bottom Left Corner and I Plan on putting another hole straight down located 1 1/4" up from the Angled hole so that I can put a Boom (when I find one) to mount the Exacto in a Horizontal configuration that way I can have 2 Axis Rotation. The First Fly I tied a few days ago I used My Corded Drill as a Vice and it was kinda Cumbersome so I think this is gonna be much better. Thanks a lot😃 Have a Great Night

Interesting. Just started using a Tenkara rod and looking to tie my own flies. I've got a cigar box I'll use as a base with a support block glued inside with a little f-clamp. That way I can keep my bobbins I made and material inside.

I like this idea and am wondering what is the smallest flies that you can tie with this setup I tie ladybug flies on a size #22 hook so very small and am wondering if this can handle something that small or smaller? Please let me know also I am left handed so I tie that way but I would need the tools on the opposite side of the vice and also more holes for a whip finisher and bodkin needle and threader along with hacked pliers and two bobbin holders and maybe extra materials and thread. What size peice of wood are you using?maybe I can make something simular.
@MikeMouradian
@MikeMouradian Год назад
The vice part is an exato knife so it normally holds the thicknes of an exacto type blade so should be OK. The block is a six inch piece of 2x4 and you can drill as many holes as you want. it costs 3 bucks to make... if it comes out bad make another.

I like this project and am working on doing something like it I am wondering how large is the piece of wood that you are using for the base? I make a lot of my own tools ( whip finisher,bobbin,threader.dubbing needle,rubbing twister,ect ) plus I also use nail polish for some of my minnow flies. I also tie certain flies on a size 20-22 hooks will this hold a hook that small? Please let me know what you think. Thank You.

If you clamp it on, bore the hole close to the edge, so the knife sticks out over the end, so the kids get a bit more height from fly to table, if not making block stick out over the edge, and create unlimeted height.
@MikeMouradian
@MikeMouradian 3 года назад
actually I have modified it so that the vice does hang over the edge. Great minds think alike.

@@MikeMouradian Yep - most inventions define them selves very much, if you ask the right question. As H Ford said: "If I had listened to the customers, I would have tried to create a faster horse".. And thanks - not often I get called great..

For a portable, on the go tool...maybe. The trick is, with no rotary functionality, the patterns would have to be the most basic. I can't imagine traveling with something that would be so limiting. I can't spare the space! Lol
