The M1 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini are all impressive. But is Apple Silicon really going to end up being viable long term? Today we talk about a respectable Ryzen 4000 APU to demonstrate just how far ahead Apple may be...

Apple announced Apple Silicon and a transition to ARM from x86 earlier this year after years of rumors and speculation. The M1 SoC released in the M1 Mac mini, M1 MacBook Pro, and M1 MacBook Air is impressive. The chip is insanely efficient and has rather excellent performance-objectively-not just for a low-TDP chip. But how does it compare to something like a Ryzen 4750G APU. Or what about a top-of-the-line laptop CPU like the 5900HX? We benchmark both machines and demonstrate how Apple Silicon's power efficiency just can't be matched and how that might affect the high-performance of an upcoming M2 or M1X later this year.

Whoops! Every once in a while we make a mistake. The chart at 2:03 has the Mac with a score of 10173. It actually got 7793. I knew of this scoring disparity when I wrote the script as I used the term “manhandled,” but it seems we goofed in the edit by making the results appear closer than they were. All the other numbers however have been verified as correct. Apologies for the error!

@@razerow3391 Even with the SSD swap being high, it will probably still outlast the usefulness of the computer. It's not like it is a cheap SSD or HDD. Also the Dead Ryzen chips were only reported unusually high by one buyer in lower quantities which essentially could be a statistical anomaly (and seemingly so considering other retailers that have had much more stock only seem to have failure rates slightly higher than intels'). I am not sure what has been recently happening with x570 chipset and the usb ports, so I wont comment on that, but so far it looks to be a problem with pcie gen4 since they do work when switched to gen3. Also Intel is on their own 14nm which is much easier to get a hold of rather than TSMC's 7nm. Of course right now I recommend going intel for it's price for gaming. 10600k is $230 right now which is a pretty great price. For creatives, I'd have to recommend amd though. xP

The secret is not the chip, is the software. Apple can make sure that every transistor put inside there will be used by the system. On PC no matter how strong the IGP or other supporting hardware, will Windows make use of it? Will windows make RIGHT use of it? Windows struggles even to handle high core CPUs. No matter how good the SoCs AMD and Intel can make, they don't have Apple's software integrating and this hurts a lot. Something needs to be done to solve this.

@@doiceslife8374 microsoft dont have own arm... apple on the other hand, owns multiple hardware companies, and only builds a handful of devices that they can pick and choose and customize to run their own software... inefficiencies in pcs comes from too much customization and generic hardware combinations... software cant be minimized as it needs to run on too many varieties of hardware for way too long... apple has luxury to expire and not support old hardware... also apple's strength is that they are highly specialized in mobile devices and has so much cash to afford best people in the market to choose at any price they want. they have too much cash to afford these... i very much doubt apple chose to be this power house but as a by product of their mobile consumer business, they almost completely ignore business customers now. they however now have a product that came out of years of frustrations (i doubt they planned it like this but financial power and pure frustration) they can if they are clever put stuff for business market too... be it workstations and servers... i dont know if they want to but their mobile consumer business is doing way too well for them to divert their attention to commercial business... i hope they dont, as microsoft did in the past with mobile markets...

yeah but is still not that good at least as far as laptops and especially because apple is marketed many times for work, and apple is still a shitty company in more ways than any other, if i changed laptop or computer once every 1 or 2 years sure only now with the M1 chip it could make sense to move to apple (lowest tiers, not if you do heavy work) but there is still so many things to take in consideration, that being said if i wanted a small computer for a living room the M1 mac mini is the best option, i was surprised with this video because is what i have thought since this came out, probably mostly because of how weak the competition is, and if the macbook air was $200 cheaper it would be a clear winner (even with apple's practices), which is a huge improvement from the previous one where a $500-$600 laptop beated the macbook air. Of course apple is gonna probably sell more with this than ever before but as far as people that know about computers it got very close to the line of it being good for the price but not quite yet.

Great comparison, I’m glad you pointed out the availability factor on the 4750G. These are exciting times for hardware innovation, to be sure. The potential here is for a real renaissance on the stagnant desktop/laptop end of the computing sphere. For so long-whether it be Apple or others-the primary focus has felt like it was mobile, and it’s nice to see how one hand sort of feeds the other as it circles back to more traditional computing applications.

Driving a 43" LG 4K TV as main screen and a secondary 27" 1080 screen through second HDMI on a Mason port expander. To my surprise, everything ran perfectly...and very fast. All my existing apps worked fine. While 8G was a real limitation on my 2015 13" MacBook Pro, It wasn't a problem on the M1 Mini. This is the fastest computer I have owned and most reliable. I have sold my 2013 Mac Pro, and my 2015 MacBook Pro and will probably buy the M1 Air. when I can travel again.

I recently bought an iPad pro M1 11", mostly for on the go photo editing but I recently tested editing a small video on it with Luma Fusion, throwing the heaviest footage my cameras can shoot, I use lumix gh5 and s5, so I shot some 4k 10bit 4-2-2 all-i 25fps footage at 400mbps, 4k 10bit 4-2-0 50fps at 200mbps and a few weaker versions, all in log. This sort of footage makes my razer 15 struggle when editing, especially when editing graded footage. The iPad handled the footage no problem at all, complete and smooth scrubbing, no hitching, no problem with colour grading applied as well completely seamless. Honestly I wouldn't be able to edit client work on it, nor would I want to do anything too complicated just due to the UI but I may shift any passion and personal videos on there. It was so much nicer, fun and easy to use in comparison with dealing with premiere pro and it's instability and I think a part of that is due to how simple iPadOS is. It's light on the system meaning programs and the power can be utilised much more efficiently.

The M1 being the first generation in its class makes me very certain in a few years it will make getting a Mac one of the best investments you could make. Battery life in particular is one of the biggest reasons. Since the M1 was such a game changer, Intel is now completely obsolete and is a terrible choice long term. And I know some may disagree with the science behind ARM64 but only time will tell, unfortunately the market and industry are certainly not moving in Intel's favor.

These comment shows a huge lack understanding of why the M1 is even fast to begin with.. Intel obsolete??? Lol. Intel uses Monolithic Processor Design at 14nm. AMD uses Chiplet Design at 7nm. Apple is using System on a Chip Design with PoP (Package on a Package stacking) at 5nm. The first problem why Intel chips are slower than all others is because they're still on 14nm.. and you know what? They're doing pretty damn good at 14nm vs. 7nm. vs. 5nm! They have literally pushed 14nm to its limits. Further than any other company. Their chips will still have less latency than AMD chips because it doesn't have to deal with IPC latencies over the Infinity Fabric. However, Chiplet design is showing its colours with huge performance in SMT and pretty damn good performance in ST. Now that design is out of the way, let's see why Apple's M1 is fast and why it MIGHT be a setup for failure. The M1 chip uses SOC design with PoP. It means they actually take the CPU, DRAM, GPU, Cache, Neural Engine, etc (SOC).. and cram it in a vertical stack layout onto the same chip (PoP). They do not have the RAM far away from the CPU at all.. Not only that, but it's a UNIFIED MEMORY design (Apple's fancy word for Integrated Graphics with SAM (AMD).. aka Resizable BAR) so it means the GPU shares the same memory as the CPU and everything else. Actually, the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, and any component that needs access to the memory & cache already has direct access to it. In other words, there is no need to transfer/upload something to the GPU when it already has access to it directly (this is one reason why their iGPU beats Intels). It is also RISC based instruction set, and the M1 is limited to a SINGLE THREAD PER CORE gives it a huge advantage in benchmarks whereas Hyper-Threading will cripple the Intel/AMD chips in a ST benchmark and blow away the M1 in an SMT benchmark. Do all of what Apple did at 5nm and you're beating the competition (temporarily). Now like I said, everything is literally on the same chip, and it's optimized as best as it can. They can possibly squeeze out a little bit more performance by re-arranging but it won't amount for much. What will amount to a boost in the next generation is when they go to the next MOSFET node 3nm process. But even then they're already squeezing out as much as they can out of this chip. So in terms of raw computing power, if Intel and AMD were on the 5nm process node, they'd destroy the M1.. After all Intel is still on 14nm and still doing quite well against both 7nm and 5nm competitors. There is one advantage Apple has though: They design both the OS and the hardware so they can make the OS highly optimized for that hardware. Windows can't do that as it runs on many different hardware configurations. Finally, the reason the Intel chips suffered so much in a Mac is because Apple's thermal design is terrible! They constantly pushed for the thinnest possible macs with no regards to anything else and down clocked every single Intel chip ever placed in a mac.. But oh well.. people will continue to lose upgradeability (every single thing is soldered together).. Apple already has to replace the entire motherboard for all M1's affected by the USB-C charging dock issue lol.. and now the SSD issue is even worse as you can't replace the SSD lol. But without truly understanding anything, you guys will swear by them. :l P.S. The M1 based computers still use Intel JHL8040R Thunderbolt 4 Retimer and Intel's thunderbolt technology (will be available in USB-4).. that makes Intel not "obsolete" ;)

@@FADHsquared The paragraphs were explaining design of the chips.. 1. I'm not saying it's a good thing. They are already moving to TSMC's 5nm via outsourcing their Core-i3's to TSMC. They will be outsourcing the 3nm chips to TSMC in 2022 as well.. They are also going to 7nm in their own fab. So all I was saying is that they're doing quite well competing currently at 14nm lithography than people give them credit for. I was simply explaining the difference in speed and power and why the design of the M1 isn't going to help it in the upcoming releases vs. Intel && AMD. 2. What? How does "They've already squeezed out as much as they can with this chip" exactly translate to: "iPads and iPhones shouldn't keep improving".. Did I miss something here? 3. Ok.. you can literally say this for any chip on the market right now. Even AMD's 5800X, 5900X, 5950X chips use a lot of power. Even the Nvidia 3080 uses a lot of power. Yet Intel mobile processors do fine in Dell XPS laptops but not in a MacbookPro's which LEAKS Lithium Hexafluorophosphate from the Li-ion battery. Again, XPS and ASUS laptops and a bunch of others are doing just fine with Intel CPUs. You guys are forgetting Apple once ditched their own PPC instruction set (Power-PC) to go back to Intel lol.. The M1 isn't the first RISC based instruction set Apple has adopted. It also isn't the 1st PoP on SOC design either. I guess we'll all just have to wait for the next 2-3 generations of chips to see who comes out on top. ARM is going to be great for Mobile devices (Laptops, Phones, etc).. It already is. But it won't be "Desktop" quality any time soon.

Apple as of right now has a large advantage over any other chip. However, One thing that is often glanced over is the process node size of their manufacturing. As of right now they are the only big name in this space using 5nm, this gives them added efficiency, assuming AMD's predictions are correct on performance gains (which they have been for a while) them moving to 5nm will deliver over a 30% increase in performance. This would narrow the gap significantly, and this is something rarely explained in an m1 vs x86 performance comparison. Although you still did a great job with the video and I can't wait for the next one. If you have any questions on anything, ask me in the comments

This sounds likely. Also, nobody seem to notice all these benchmarks are done with cpus that run on ddr4 while the m1 employs ddr5 ram... It is clear to everybody, however, Intel and AMD have been sleeping for at least 10 years. If you have to use a apple product in order to have power efficiency, that is a problem... it does not even run Linux. Even more troublesome is the concept you need to have a very integrated system - a SOC - to achieve that. If that is the case, we could see the end of the modular pc concept and, make no mistake, a general and consistent rise in cost of ownership.
