Guy Laliberte is legendary for his willingness to face off against the best poker pros in the world for the highest stakes, both live and online. In this massive cash game, the billionaire makes a move on a legend in his own right, Doyle Brunson. The pot soon grows out of control and becomes the largest (at the time) in High Stakes Poker history. But how should this have played out?
As always on Poker Hands, Doug breaks down each street of action and shares his thoughts on how each player made their decisions.

Doyle's larger-than-optimal sizing must have been based on a sense he had that folks were lighting money on fire in this game, and he'd have gotten no folds at all with smaller bets. He got few enough as it is. Plus, one of the games great whales had limped in ahead of him.

Love the raise by Guy. A-5 is literally the bottom of his range, as there are no draws that could have called the flop, so the raise is almost mandatory to balance his nut hands. And he has some equity when called, too. Only the diamonds saved Doyle.
@eriklinderstam2140
@eriklinderstam2140 2 года назад
If I was Guy I would put Doyles range like this: AA (1 combination), JJ(3 combinations), 44 (3 combinations), AJ(6 combinations), A4(1 combination since I only think A4s is an option and then it has to be spades), AK/Q(16 combinations), most AXs (not A6s, or A7s + A4s already counted for. 12 combinations). If you factor in that a lot of people called pre-flop and that no one else called the bet on the flop I think you should discount some KQJ. I would discount one K/Q/J each from my math (the discount should be weighted more for K and less for Q/J but I simplify a bit). After this adjustement, and the A2 of diamonds on the turn (I dont think the turn bet affects the range much): AA (1), JJ(1), 44 (3), AJ(4), A4 of spades(1), A2 of spades (1), AK/Q(12), A3/5/8/9/T of spades (5), A3/5/8/9/T of diamonds(5). Ahead vs 2, chop vs 2, 7 outs vs 15, 6 outs vs 5, 4 outs vs 8, 3 outs vs 1. Calling the turn bet is not profitable, now is a fold profitable? The pot odds say that, to break even, you need a fold ~40% of the time if you have 0% equity and are committed for all of Doyles stack if he calls. I think that AA, JJ, 44, AJ and diamond draws always calls. If we disregard soul reads, A4 will almost always call, A2 half the time, AK (not diamonds) less than half the time, AQ almost never, AX of spades never calls. On average (without soul reads) there should be 13 folds and 20 calls which is 40% folds. So already you break even. Against the calls you have on average ~15% equity so the average profit of this play should be a around $70k.
@gdbynoe
@gdbynoe 2 года назад
Rubbish ... Doyle sitting on top pair with a reasonable kicker would always have called the raise. Way the hand played out he knew that 90% of the time his hand was best. The diamonds were the insurance against the 10% of the time he was behind. That's why it's called gambling. Doyle is a lifetime gambler and a good one at that.

Mr. Polk's objective analysis is very good indeed. The only small point one might add is that David Benyamine calls the pre-flop raise knowing that if he hits the flop dead-solid-perfect he can win a huge pot by either sucking in Guy or backing in after letting Doyle pump it up. Subjective analysis of the hand is a little different. Doyle Brunson is an old master at knowing his opponent's behavior and mood. He knows Jamie Gold will call with almost any two cards on his last hand before leaving. He knows that Guy will want in on that, too. On the flop Doyle bets big to narrow down the field, and it works perfectly. On the turn, he continues betting big because he's trying to make Guy believe he's bluffing. Remember, they've played together a lot and Doyle knows his opponent. When Guy raises, Doyle is sure his strategy is working ....

I know in theory Guy has to call the flop c bet but in practice I don't think folding it loses you all that much ev. Of course, Guy is a mega billionaire so folding prob never even entered his brain

I agree that it's a really good spot to bluff for Guy. Being that he has A5s, he certainly has A4s in his range and likely A2s as well. 44 and AJ also probably take that line with the flop being fairly dry. While that's not a huge number of combos, it's enough that Doyle thought he was behind. As can be heard in the chatter after the hand was over, turning the nut flush saved Doyle otherwise he probably has to find a fold, and Guy's bluff looks awesome.

@ 10:22 This is the first time I've ever seen Doyle even a little "angry" 😲 it only lasted for a second, but the anger was real and it clearly flashed across his face. This is not a knock on Doyle as he's a GOAT, a class act, legend and a consummate professional!!

I know what you mean, it,s alot of money and doyle PAID to see guys hand, at that moment guy knows he needs help and for all Doyle knew he just lost well over a quarter million bucks.

I'm not big into tells, but I think there's something to be said about timing tells both live and online. Doyle is betting quickly on the flop and turn, which I'd take as being polarized to nuts or air (easier decisions), but probably nuts since he is so tight. Obviously didn't quite work out that way with just top pair, but he went with the hand without any hesitation, so it might be a clue to his mindset for that hand.

Yes and no. Billionaires don't have billions in the bank. It probably feels like losing 500 to 1k to a average player. Hurts but isn't something they will think about in a few weeks.

i still dont get why he should bet so big the turn? can you explain it more? whats speaks against check? what you think about Laliberte range there? if Guy has A6-A9 he wouldn pay turn+river and some KT, QT, KQ, has easy fold to that sizing, why not check(or make smaller sizing) and bet or blufcatch river. dimond will be a card that Laliberte would possible bluf?
