I'm still running an i7 6700 after all these years and it's great. Modern gaming at 4k rarely pushes it passed 70% usage while having other stuff running in the background. For budget builds skylake shouldn't be overlooked.

@Simmonsumers35
@Simmonsumers35 Год назад
@@samoerai6807 Indeed, only game I've played at 4k that my cpu is the bottleneck is Cyberpunk 2077. GPU only reaches 80-90% but I'm still able to reach 60 average on high settings so it still doesn't matter I guess.
@samoerai6807
@samoerai6807 Год назад
@@Simmonsumers35 what gpu do you pair with the 6700? Also you could try a bit higher settings to make it more of a gpu bottleneck. It’ll give you better graphics, can reduce stutters, and in some rare cases it gives your more performance in fps. This is when your gpu is faster then your cpu and it’s not the bottleneck. By shifting the load to the faster component (the gpu) by increasing graphics settings, it may result in more fps
@Simmonsumers35
@Simmonsumers35 Год назад
@@samoerai6807 I'm aware of all that but in CPU bottlenecked conditions at 4k the bahavior isn't as predictable from game to game. Sometimes higher settings just run way worse becuase in certain games it just can't get passed the weaker CPU no matter how hard you push the GPU. I run a RTX 2080 TI and like I said, only Cyberpunk 2077 has shown a bottleneck scenario where getting to 60 fps takes a bit of fiddling with settings. Any other game I don't struggle to get to 60 so upgrading my cpu seems unnecessary at 4k unless games suddenly get way more CPU intensive in the coming years which I doubt as the consoles are pretty weak this generation.

This machine with the red trim was actually my first desktop computer. A friend of mines folks that had more money than they had sense had this machine in their office of the business they owned. Windows corrupted and needed to be reinstalled, and his son asked for my help fixing it,. By the time I had gotten to it, they bought a new system and let me keep the inspiron. It was a massive step up from the i7 4510u / GT 730m laptop I had, and I was thrilled. I eventually went to upgrade to a GTX 1060 3gb, but not only were there no additional power connectors, the internal power supply wouldn't keep up either. So, I bought an EVGA 750W PSU on marketplace, put a paperclip in the ground and green pins, and was rolling. I eventually harvested the CPU and GPU to put in a new case, bought an MSI H110m gaming mobo, and that was when I realized that the prebuilt was using DDR3 after I had everything taken apart. $50 later for some funky mismatched ram off of marketplace and it was alive and I could play CS and transport the PC with much more ease. I ran that rig with the i7 from the prebuilt and a 1070Ti in a couple different chassis until a couple of years ago until I had proper justification to upgrade. So many memories taking that pc, side panel off, second PSU duct taped to the top. That machine taught me so much about computers. Thanks for taking me down memory lane.

You could even overclock CPUs in their 775 mobos thru SetFSB and I even managed to get a gaming-stable overclock on a Pentium E5800 from 2.8 GHz to 3.5 GHz, then swapped the CPU for a quad-core Xeon thanks to the G41 chipset it came with which allowed pretty crazy combinations.

There is a slightly higher output power supply available that comes with a 6-pin PCIe connector but the mounting screws do not line up. Good to see this PC being featured! I'm still using this Prebuilt PC as of today! (inspiron 3668 in the asian market I think) You can slap in a good gtx 750ti or rx 460 or even a gtx 1050 to run this baby without a problem but boy oh boy upgrading this PC is a hassle since it's a prebuilt you are limited to any upgrades such as ram(you are allowed to use only 16gb 2400mhz), GPU and ofc the PSU! The PSU is the biggest problem you'll face unless you can buy that 8 pin PSU converter for the mobo but i need to wait for months just to get that thing. So what my technician did when i was upgrading the gpu (rx570). He let the stock psu run for the mobo while there's an external psu to power my Rx 570 and it worked like magic. I play triple A games to Med-High, I can achieve high framerates and a 144hz monitor is capable to this built for esports game like valorant, R6, and CSGO. Been using it for 5 years from now and it's still a beast for all my gaming needs! I may start with the worst pc and the worst decision to buy it since i was a noob back then but with a little touch of internet magic and modding they can take you anywhere my man. THE SKY IS THE LIMIT!

It would be interesting to see what would happen if you installed a 7700k and something like a 1650 or even an rx6600 in here. The ram could be upgraded to 16 gigs of ddr3 2133 too. As the 6600 only pulls about 130 watts, it would be just fine with something like a sata to pcie power adapter. Or you could just upgrade the PSU while you're at it and basically you would just be left with the old shell and the motherboard.

You don't wanna put a 7700k or a 6700k even in there because you'd need a better cooling solution, which can't be done with that particular case/motherboard. Besides, the 6700 is still a very capable 1080p, 60fps gaming cpu. The videocard would be the best upgrade, and a 1650 could do fine with that, or a 1650super with a sata to 6pin adapter. That and make sure you have 16gb of ram and you an play any game in that computer, i assure you.

There are still plenty of 6-7 year old components out there that will game at low settings 1080p just fine. I just recently got rid of a Dell Alienware x51 R2 that I had bought USED in 2017 that had an i5 and a GTX 745 with 8GB of RAM and a 1TB mechanical HDD and a 240W power brick that over the years needed upgrading love. I paid $300 USD for it, and straight away I bought a 1TB SSD and adapters to install it. That sped it up tremendously. I then bought the highest PSU 330W, and a 1060 GTX 6GB video card, along with 16GB of matching RAM. Last year, I found a i7 4th gen that was the final upgraded part for $60 USD and after doing that, I had some great benchmark numbers on a 9 year old PC! It would play 75% of any games today @ 1080p no problem.

@@SeeJayPlayGames I feel like the only quad core worth upgrading your whole system would be the i3 10100F/B450 combo is way cheaper than investing in Skylake. The i3 is quite a bit faster than the i7 6700 and you have a lot more upgrade potential with 10th gen.
@SeeJayPlayGames
@SeeJayPlayGames Год назад
@@yeetus59 B450 is for AMD. I think you mean B460. And for the same or less money, one could get a B560 instead and be able to go 11th gen later - if it's worth it, which I understand it isn't. But, either would require getting DDR4 memory, which I don't own any of right now. So maybe the cheaper option would be a B85 board and a i7-4790K or something, but those are a bit expensive. But at least I have RAM - 2 4GB sticks I'm not using right now and 2 8GB sticks that I am. All 1600MT CL9, so not great, but at least they're not 1333MT. Maybe a better route to repurpose my old 3020 would be to move the i5 and 16GB RAM to a B85 board, and get a cheap i3 to plop into it along with an SSD and 8GB of RAM. The idea is to set up a "better" computer for my wife as a side effect of my upgrade. She has an old Ivy Bridge Celeron 1007U (1.5GHz 2C2T) laptop, ugh - but hey, it was dirt cheap, like $50 and then I spent $70 on accessories for it, which can move to a new system. I think an i3 with 8GB and an SSD would be okay for her needs. She's into emulation (SNES/PSX/N64/GC), web surfing and light video editing (VirtualDub). Maybe leave the GT1030 in it as well, or at least put it in whenever I can get a real GPU and use the GT1030 for an interim solution. Meanwhile, I will have the option of going to an i7, but is it worth it over what I have? I think maybe not, not in the 4th gen. And maybe boosting up to 32GB RAM, but as it stands I've yet to max out 16GB. And with 4th gen intel, I might as well not bother with anything faster than GTX 1070/1080 or RX 590/5500XT, so that keeps things cheaper as well. Not trying to spend a fortune here. And yeah, 1080p is fine for my old eyes.

RX 6400 would be great in this system, I'm using one in an Optiplex 9020, i7-4790, 16GB DDR3 1600 and it does great. This i7-6700 is better with the same PCIe 3.0 slots so should perform a bit better in 1% lows. CPU-limited games like AC:Ody simply do not get 60FPS thanx to CPU bottleneck even with gfx at lo and the GPU far from 100% load, but most others with medium CPU load like H:ZD and SotTR keep the 6400 at 98+%

Everything running while gaming only using a little over 100 watts and it works great at medium settings 1080p, also threw in a i7 6700 just because I found a used one for cheap. The only thing is the space, the card is pretty close to the PSU but it's a front to back airflow psu so no extra heat from the unit reaches the card. DDR3 on Skylake is pretty cool, you could get a 32gb kit on the cheap and have a pretty good beater workstation. From what I remember that Cinebench score is around where my DDR4 system had; the 6700 just doesn't clock very high in exchange for its low power draw. Though, it's silly to have a low power CPU in a full-tower case with no 5.25" bays. Dell should've just stuck to the SFF Optiplexes.

Getting unlucky again, the 280X fromer mining card I got for just 50€ shortly after lunch of 30xx series seems to be giving up and down-clocking doesnt help either as well as changing the output port for display so it must be on it´s last breaths. How do I know? Just the second I was writing this the picture frooze (didn´t knew it´s part of the video yet) I was worrying "don´t give up and freeze now, just let me finish a couple words for crying out loud" because for about two weeks suddently the image freezes before the monitor (dual monitor isn´t even an option anymore, display connection loss in less than 2 minutes) turns black saying "no connection". Pressing restart immediantly fixes it, but than sometimes crashes (audio everything keeps playing normal like nothing is going on) again within 2 minutes after restart, so it´s obviously the GPU about to die. Sucks since used prices in the german city I live in still are absoloutly redicoules, 120€ for a 1050Ti? Nope, hard pass, 140€ for an RX 570 8GB? Hard pass again like 180€ 5500XT, it´s just loughable and don´t think prices for old Intel CPUs are any better, they´re worse!

I had one of these. Complete nightmare to do anything with. Almost all the parts are dell made or dell built and cant be swapped (Like the PSU and motherboard) so upgrading was stupidly difficult unless I got another dell made part, which are rare to come by and expensive. The BIOS is super outdated and supports none of the newest features, even security ones, and Dell refuses to update it. The model I got was a bit different and promised to have an AMD RX560 in it. Turned out it actually had an RX460 in it, but with a 560 bios flashed onto it. I was pretty much scammed. Long story short I will never be buying from them again. Glad I built my own PC.
@Gatorade69
@Gatorade69 Год назад
Like you actually bought it from Dell and not secondhand ? How/why would they pass off a 460 as a 560 ? Though back in the day some cards were basically the same and could be flashed, so It's definitely a thing. Just seems a bit scummy for Dell themselves to do, but it is Dell.

I took delivery today of a HP Compaq 8300... £20 delivered, i5, 4gb of ram half a tera HDD, built in graphics capable of 1440p... then I find out HP only used VGA or DisplayPorts... but other than that the machine is like brand new, not a scratch, dustbunny or anything to say its actually been used and I only wanted it to power my USB microscope and use to read watchmaking technical sheets in my watch working area but it will do me and is quite a potent little machine. For all intents and purposes its basically what I call half a laptop as it uses laptop memory and layout pretty much, still £20 and I am happy, also means I got something to use whilst I upgrade me main rig up with water :) Oh and the HP has a fancy DVD/Blu-ray dual layer writer which def was a bonus :D
