When I found this I was still a kid. I think it was in a playlist that I listened to every night, crying my eyes out. Every step since then lead me back here to this song, at age 23. From the bitter, angry, hopelessness I felt before, now I see acceptance, grieving, and gratitude. Bye bye Vivi. You didn't know, but I grew you inside my heart. By the time we met again, turns out we'd never left at all. I never need to say goodbye again, because I've grown to become my best friend.

This has got to be my absolute favorite song. Kenshi yonezu is so clever with his lyrics. And the direct translation from japenese is simply heartbreaking. The imagery in the bridge is Especially vivid and descriptive. The entire song is written about “vivi” where the adjective “viv” means, in many languages, “to live”. So from this we have two possible interpretations of the song. This song can be thought of as a song about a girl, who is his “vivi” or “his life”. A more accurate interpretation i think is that vivi is his life. This is solidified as he talks about writing a letter. The entire song is about him not being able to say the right things, before he leaves every thing behind. In his words he says “I leave behind, and you with it..” in a sense he’s leaving behind his life. And the ending verse solidifies as he sings “I love you, Vivi, But all our love is, is a goodbye..” I know that Yonezu’s grandfather was someone he valued in his life very much and I think he wrote this song for him after he passed. For me sometimes i relate to this song. I feel like no matter how much i love my life and the people in it everything would be so much better without me in it. It feels all my love comes to “is a goodbye.” And i find solace in the fact that one of my favorite singers shared this feeling.

The man who produced this song had severe depression. This song is about him not being able to convey his feelings to his girlfriend and eventually left. In the original music video the main character is a monster which represents the guy himself, he always saw himself as a monster.

I see where you get this from also, but if you think about the fact that he does not mention anything of vivi until the chorus, it wouldn't be about a girl or a love. Plus, vivi translates to 'Life' in Latin. He talks a lot in this about himself, and how he is worthless and finds it hard to express his feelings. He also tries to write a letter to life, trying to express his own feelings but can't. I thought it sort of stood for a suicide note. The flowers at the end symbolize him saying goodbye once more, and that's him killed himself. Just what I thought, but again I can see how your explanation could fit too. That's why I love this song also.

It might not be interesting but I once read the theory that (since it looked like Humpty Dumpty in the Original Video) the Song is actually about a Girl growing up and doubting the fairy tales and stories she believed in as a child, thus the guy (personification of a Character she imagined, I assume) saying his "words soundind like lies", etc. And he has to say Goodybe because she is growing up, leaving him behind.

I cried to this twice. it just hits the marks in multiple targets, people know how hard it is to talk to parents and such, how people mess up and try to fix things, and how when you realize things. It is a beautiful song thanks for translating it with your beautiful voice.

it can sound spooky, right? but it really isn't. its talking about how children from the town are growing up and leaving, going to look for bigger futures. people talk about them behind, talking about the possibility of them reaching their goals, or exclaiming when they see them famous or on tv.

I remember being a child and relating to this song... and now a days this meaning even lingers and is more stronger, I also view the song with a more personal interpretation, such as vivi being my happy and youthful innocence and being able to be strong and stick up for my self, because I was always forced as a child to have other make my choices and never could say what I wanted to say without being afraid.... I now am better but developed a pretty bad anxiety and panic attack disorder and learning to finally being able to feel free and choose what I want to do, and live my life..... I'm so glad I had found this song again. I brings back so many things ..... thank you... Things maybe hard but over time things can heal and so can you and you can grow from them..

Even this guitar version hits me with nostalgia... No matter which version of this song I hear, I always get nostalgic & depressed....I usually get emotional when I hear songs with piano, but this is one of the very few songs that make me emotional even with non-piano versions. The meaning as well as the chord progression of the song are just...too emotional for me ;_; It just makes me realize that my life will never get better than what I am now, and just makes me want to hurt myself. Really, I just feel how better life was for me in the olden days... Nostalgic feels. 😢

I keep coming back to this video ever since I found it in the summer of 2019, the lyrics are absolutely beautiful, it really describes many aspects in my life, like how I always mess up in my life goals and try to fix things back into place, many times I'm trying to make progress I fail to do a single thing as I want and I feel worthless. Also recently I have developed a form of social anxiety that makes me feel uncomfortable when I'm with other teenagers my age, it's not exactly shyness, but it makes me struggle to talk properly with the proper words, also I'm 17 years old. I've always had difficulties to say what I want and make choices without being afraid, I'm gradually fixing these issues, but now I have developed this social anxiety thing. It's such a sad life that I got :-(

This, this is simply beautiful. When Vivi first came out, I fell so in love with it. I am so in love with the song that I want to name my first daughter Vivi Alice. I’ve listen to this song multiple times now. But, for some reason, every time I listen to this song I always think of the show codename: kids next door. I’ve tried coming up with a reason why that happens but I have none. By the way the song was really and your cover fits so well with the song
