Jai SeethaRam Erstwhile here though there were Muslims n Christians they anyway felt they r the part of Indian culture so they sung Ramayana n not as Kararassery said that these people took it as a literature. Valmiki was also a scheduled tribe. Then why brahmins accepted it. Then Bhramins were well versed in Sanskrit n that was the original one. It's not like what Kararassery thinks as Ezhuthachchan was a shifts so did Brahmins avoided reading AdhyataRamayana. U really creat a communal feeling in Hindus. Mistakes r not to be made the fact.
I as a hindu myself takes a different view on this issue. Ramayana, for a hindu like me, is a tradition that pervades religion and culture although Rama is a hindu deity. As ramayana travelled throughout cultures and civilisations, it took different interpretations and forms. Thailand Ramayana, Indonesian Ramayana amd Malaysian Ramayana are vastly different from Indian ramayana, and the former ones have their own cultures intertwined with the base storyline of ramayana. I take a pluralistic view here, and do not promote a communal, strictly Puritan view , but rather appreciate the diverse way in which diverse cultures welcomed this legend and gave their own interpretation's from their experiences and cultural viewpoints. I fully appreciate that diversity, although as a malayali hindu myself, I recite the ezhuthachan ramayana during the monsoon seasons. Yes, the brahmins and upper castes had their original ramayana, but original does not mean authentic. Infact, nothing is authentic here, and Rama's story is but a legend. The bhakthi school in kerala accepted ramayana and interpreted it with Advaita philosophy and bhakthi traditions, in effect symbolising their philosophy through the Rama as the main vaishnava deity. Likewise the wayanadan tribes have their own telling of Ramayana where sita's birthplace is in coorg, close to their tribal dominion. Thus, they accepted Ramayana in a manner that allows the legend to penetrate into their culture. To me personally, all these are symbolic ways to penetrating Ramayana into their respective cultures and viewpoints, and thus representing their culture through the storyline. I do not feel any sort of hatred against mappila muslims just because their ramayana is vastly different from the one that I recite during the Karkidakamaasam, but on the other hand, appreciate how much of diversity this legend has absorbed and identify with that greater diversity as I recite Ramayana. In other words, I only consider my Hindu identity when I recite Ramayana as a subset of a great, diverse, pluralistic Ramayana tradition. Infact, every sensible hindu should take this sort of viewpoint, rather than fighting whose version of Ramayana is to be considered authentic, because after all, ramayana was originally a folk tale that circulated amongst nomadic tribes in India, as they travelled from kingdom to kingdom, but later the hindus adopted it when these tribes merged into the greater vedic tradition.
