In this talk, Dr. Viswanathan attempts to present some points regarding the construct of "Charisma" and about charismatic leadership that has now assumed special political and social significance in India. Max Weber's tripartite classification of authority is briefly introduced , and ten specific points regarding Charismatic authority is discussed at some length. These are: (1) Devotion of the disciple is "affectual" ( " Charismatic authority rests on the affectual and personal devotion of the follower to the lord and his gifts of grace ( charisma)“ -Max Weber)
(2)Disciples may go to any extent to serve their charismatic leaders. (3)Typical charismatic leader is a narcissist (4)Devotion of the disciple is "personal" . (5) Communitarization ( An organized group subject to charismatic authority will be called a charismatic community (Gemeinde). It is based on an emotional form of communal relationship(Vergemeinschaftung)“ Max Weber.)
(6) Charisma is a "construct" and can easily disappear. (7) The root of "Charisma" lies in the felt need of the followers for such leadership. "Atheism" in itself is not sufficient to overcome this sense of need. (8) Proof is the basic prerequisite for the persistence of charisma (9) Is all Charisma unacceptable, all the time?
