The Royal Government of Cambodia considers this 260-kilometer-long project to release water and diversify water from Phnom Penh as the first historical building of Cambodia because it was built with concrete pavement at the bottom of the canal in the modern technical standard. Construction has been completed 76.77 percent.
This is according to the words of Samdech Prime Minister Hun Manet on the occasion of inspecting the irrigation system to liberate and diversify Stung Prek Tnaot on the morning of June 14, 2024. On that occasion, Samdech considered that this is the first time that Cambodia has built a canal with a concrete floor, so this project will be a historical project and the first in Cambodia.
It should be noted that this important irrigation system is not only useful for diverting water from Phnom Penh, but it will also benefit the rescue of more than 300,000 hectares of flooded areas, including farms, houses and areas. Some factories are located in Phnom Penh, Kandal and Kampong Speu provinces.
In addition, this huge canal can guarantee water for the rainy season for irrigating more than 500,000 hectares of people's fields.
According to Samdech Thipdey's visit to the project, as of June 14, the progress of the drainage system and flood diversion from Phnom Penh has reached about 76%, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of August 2024.
Please note that in recent years, the geography of Phnom Penh, especially the territory of Khan Danghor and some other areas in Kandal, Kampong Speu, adjacent to Stung Prek Tnaot has been severely flooded. Flooding due to runoff from the Oral Mountains, Cardamom Mountains and rainfall in Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Speu is shrinking due to the growth of residential and commercial areas.
