IDAHO FALLS - A new true crime podcast launched this week promises to tell “good stories about bad people who do very bad things” and the first episode focuses on a serial killer nobody knew existed until he was arrested.
It’s called DEVIANT and is hosted by Dan Szematowicz and Andrew Iden. The journalists have spent years reporting on crime and are bringing their talents to the podcast.
“We are going to delve into people who do bad things and try to explore the psychology behind it, the behavior and why people do the things they do,” Iden told EastIdahoNews.com.
The creators are behind the popular award-winning ‘Down The Hill: The Delphi Murders’ podcast. DEVIANT will feature different people in each series with the first being Israel Keyes.
Keyes was born in Utah in 1978 and was the second of ten children. Their family lived in a one-room cabin without electricity or running water.
He went on to murder at least three people and is suspected of killing many more. He also committed dozens of felonies including armed robbery, arson, rape, and burglary across the country between 2001 and 2012.
“The story of Israel Keyes is one of a guy who hid in plain sight for years. He was arrested in 2012 for the murder and abduction of a girl named Samantha Koenig in Anchorage, Alaska. Upon his arrest, when he started talking to authorities about what he had done to her, he actually spilled the beans and outlined for investigators that he was actually a guy who had been committing heinous crimes for years,” Iden explains.
Keyes committed his crime in “one of the most meticulous ways law enforcement or the American public has ever seen,” according to Iden.
For example, Keyes flew to Chicago in 2009, drove to Vermont and buried a “kill kit” in the woods. He returned to Alaska and two years later, flew back to Vermont, dug up the kill kit and picked people at random to murder.
Once abducted, Keyes outlined for investigators the details of his crimes.
“We’re going to do as many episodes as it takes to tell his story and then we’re going to turn around and have a new story the next week,” Iden says.

Israel Keyes is the serial killer's serial killer. Meticulous, organized, scary.

DEVIANT CHANNEL ... I am somewhat familiar with the subject of your first podcast, I'm glad that Nate from East Idaho News interviewed you and I'm proud to be your 116th subscriber. I wish you a lot of success with your endeavor. What intrigued me the most is that you're approaching it from a psychological standpoint. This is the thing that most coverage does not seem to explore much, and it is absolutely essential.

I listened to a Keyes podcast called True Crime Bulls$!t a few years ago. I stopped listening to true crime podcasts except for old timers because: 1. I don't care about your politics; 2. Using book author's given nicknames like "Golden State Killer; (huge sign of a newb ) 3. Putting thoughts in the victim's head without citing a source for that thought. I know that I sound salty but I've into true crime since my friends and family thought I was weird, and have seen people in the genre cranking out content for the dough instead of for education while making sure the victim's voice is heard. I will give this podcast a try though.

There is indeed something very disturbing about the true crime as entertainment bandwagon. I get that it is “entertainment” but there’s a way to do it properly and very few nail that. Most are exploiting these crimes and that is a very disturbing trend.

@@EffSharp It bothers me because I started true crime reading Inside Detective, True Detective, etc., where pretty women were on the cover bound, gagged, or pointing a gun at someone. I was a little kid, and didn't realize those were sexual fetishes, I thought it was about the crime. So as an adult, when I see people putting on make-up while talking about a vicious murder, or embellishments of victim's thoughts and reactions without citing sources for the info, I think of younger viewers who may think it's just part of true crime. I may be the only person who thinks this way, but that's just how I see it.

Just subscribed! Israel Keyes is a fascinating subject to explore. I doubt we will ever know the full depths of his story. He is one of the exceptions in that he did not want notoriety as a successful serial killer. He wanted privacy for himself and his family, and a quick execution. He also wanted complete control and possession of his victims, thus took the details of most of his crimes to the grave.
@BAMBiNA1632

This guy was extremeley intelligent and scary! To me he is the most scariest of the serial killers. He would still be alive if his information would not of been leaked. He did not want his daughter to know what he did plus I believe he did not want to spend the rest of his life in prison. The jail cops really messed this up. He was supposed to of been watched 24/7. SMH.

He was also featured on the show Dark minds a few years ago. I also watched hours of his interrogation he played mind games and admitted he wouldnt admit to all his crimes. Ive been interested ever since. He stashed kits with everything a sk needs hes very premeditated. He was living a double life had a child. Yet traveled around to be a sk. If he wasnt caught when he was he could still be doing this and thats a scary thought.

The word standards does not equate with values. No mainstream media anywhere has any legitimate values. They all have exactly the same psychopathic owners who control all of their content. They're only standard is the brainwash most of the people most of the time, always inserting just a shred of Truth so that most people will fall for whatever spin they are serving up on any topic.

Whilst nothing excuses their behaviour and reactions, I don't think you are being honest about your intent and motive in going to eat next door to a shop owned by people you are using to boost ratings on your show via airing this story. Anyone who can't see your motive was to try to get some action or drama by turning up there is a dumb arse, yes America is a free country and you are entitled to be there and they are responsible to control their own behaviour but you have can't deny you had intent by choosing a restaurant right next door. Pretty obvious you were looking for trouble amd drama .
