Jim and Pete thank you both so much for providing this information I've been tuning in for over a year now and will be mowing at least 1 acre with a European scythe this Growing season, following Jim's Maine system in many ways and will be selling my produce at my local farmers market. My name is John so the name of my farm is J's Grass Fed Garden but it works as a double whammy because it's actually Jim's grass fed system, Also we are located in Bennington, Vermont so after doing research and discovering that using a scythe is how this entire area of New England used to be mowed, well it only seemed right to give it a go for myself, bringing the land back to the old ways. I share this information with anyone who is willing to absorb it and always make sure to explain where I discovered this system from. Thank you Both for inspiring me in many ways ( I uptake knowledge from your solo videos as well Pete). Also Jim you have helped me realize this is very possible to make a living off of along with taking care of the land with the utmost respect at the same time. One love to you Pete and Jim.

Seems more for a back/front yard hobby gardener lk me than his scale. Doing as much as Jim I'd be constantly thinking how to do it but it's not easy to simply semi-automate...how do you feed the seeds one at a time, multiple seed sizes and shapes, mechanically??

Nifty! I think when I make one, I'll try a step drill to make a cone shaped hole to make the seeds easier to drop in.

if you invest in a thicker piece of wood you can make the hole cone shaped so that dropping the seeds doesn't need to be precise and the ruler wood does more of the work. Works like a block of multiple funnels

I've used peg board as a protective covering for carrots until they germ & get a bit of height. It allows light, air & water in while keeping the citters from damage. Raise-up the board as the plants grow with wooden blocks. Peg board wants to curl a bit, so I gave mine a "spine" down the center with a 1" × 3".

Gonna take a stab at it here with Jim’s “fungus” issue. Could possibly be a Cu deficiency given his high organic content. In the previous video it was kinda hard to tell but you can clearly see the chlorosis around the necrotic spots and wilted mature growth. Either way, fungal or deficiency a pinch of copper probably wouldn’t hurt. I’ve been dying to see Jim’s soil analysis for some time now.

when he plants beets and doesnt want to thin the 2 center rows on the pegboard, just seed the 2 outer rows and beets will be automatically spaced the way he wants, and no thinning necessary. in fact any time you want to space out more, just seed every other hole in a zigzag fashion. color code the peg board holes with a stripe to make it easy to follow diff types of spacing.

Your videos featuring Jim are always so interesting. Jim never ceases to amaze me. His garden may be labor intensive as he is always out in the garden, but then he is able to see any changes, or trouble spots that need his attention. We could only dream of being as successful as him. Of course, there is a lot of dedication behind his success!😉

Don't take it the wrong way but KIDS & RETIREES. This gives them both something 'important' to do and when you can put kids & the Elderly TOGETHER, you got a recipe for MAGIC to happen. That's what 'inventions' took away, because we didn't leave room for this... The greater BULK of 'planting' and the like, of course use the innovations available but leave SPACE for doing things by hand so the Adults can teach the children (teens) why it's important!

Awesome video. Thanks Pete for sharing. Putting together my shopping list to build one of these? Anyone know what kind of roofing nails he uses? I'm assuming the head on a regular galvanized roofing nail is big enough not to slip through the hole in the peg board.. or do I get the larger diameter plastic capped ones? I'll check at the home center.. but thought I'd ask here first. I'm guessing 1 inch nails are sufficient. I also though about doing a 5 row version instead of 4. That way I can skip rows and do 3 rows if more space is required.
