“Why do disabled people need a flag?” 🙄

We all deserve to be heard. Flags are symbols that promote social links between strangers- they invite the creation of community between people who may never even meet in person but who can support each other and share common experiences ❤️
What do you think of the flag?

At first I thought " disabilities are a sexuality now? " Then I realised pride flags aren't just for sexualities ... they are to raise awareness about a minority that are struggling which is what all pride flags do I know it seems obvious but I didnt realise what tunnel vision I had about pride only meaning sexuality

@@earthboundV This was my first thought too. But how? I think white is appropriate color for both of them. The overlap for both of them is big too. I really appreciate that they included a band for neurodivergence. I have ADHD and often don’t know if I fit into the disability community as I don’t know if ADHD “counts” as a disability. On one hand, I can relate with many of the frustrations of disabled people- doctors not believing you, needing to manage my energy levels, people dismissing your struggles as “laziness”, needing coping strategies and supports, etc. But on the other hand, I know others struggle with more severe ADHD than I do, and my struggles in the world are way less than someone with chronic illnesse(s). So it’s nice to be explicitly included.

Just because turning on a song in the stor worked yesterday doesn't mean it well work today. That’s so sweet! People need to realise it’s not just the LGBTQ+ community that has flags, but other communities too. It annoys me that people literally just forget communities exist because they need to stick together, and so they create flags for that. Not to “seem important”. 😭

The issue is "pride" as a stand alone word has become famous for lgbtq+. More simply, gender and sexuality. When used in phrasing like "having pride in .." or "being able to take pride in .." it still holds it's normal meaning of simply being proud about something. Most people don't take issue in people having pride in themselves but don't want other things being "roped in" to a celebration of gender and sexuality if its not about that.
@n0va_starr
@n0va_starr 6 месяцев назад
@@sillyface6950 You’re right. A lot of things have had something similar happen. For example, a rainbow pattern is always considered related to LGBTQ+ now. Even I, someone who likes the same gender and takes pride in that, finds this irritating. It really annoying how we humans consider everything either here or there. That’s why people can’t separate LGBTQ+ pride from pride for something else, because they hear it so often in that one context and they refuse to associate it with something else. 😭

Wow. I do much support this. I feel so accepted seeing a pride flag for disability. I collect about 800$ per month in disability and have given up on working. I live in my car since I can't afford rent. I am open about what it is I got, but there's a lot of stigma. Like I am glad psychiatric is specifically mentioned. I have been diagnosed with schizophrenia and there's a lot of misconceptions about what that's like for me and those around me. It's definitely interfered with my ability to work, but it's tough to get enough money to support myself. I have another hearing coming up in May regarding qualification as being considered disabled. They need all my hospitalization records and stuff going back years but I was really out of it when institutionalized, so I wish it was easier with less red tape. Give everyone a universal basic income for all I care. I just want to have a life and be happy since symptoms showed up.

I think you probably meet more disabled people than you think. The sad fact about societies that don’t accept disabilities is that the disabled people then get pushed into two categories - has ability to mask adequately hide disability, and does not have that ability. Both groups will experience differing negative effects, but they will both suffer for it. The ones that are usually hidden the most successfully are invisible disabilities like some forms of neurodivergence, or physical disabilities that are more easily disguised like potentially an amputated leg if you have a prosthetic and wear pants/shoes that fully cover. The ones are are more difficult to hide like a missing hand, ones that require very visible mobility aids (walker, wheelchair, stabilizers, etc), high support NDs, and others will tend to be pushed into hiding themselves since they can’t hide their disability in such societies, which is why you won’t usually recognize when you’ve bumped into a disabled person. Also, they might not even know they’re disabled with they have a learning disability, neurodivergence, or other disability that is mostly brain centered instead of being mostly or entirely physical, as getting a diagnosis in societies like that is typically very stigmatized and isn’t usually pursued unless the individual clearly falls into the “can’t hide it” category. (And even then, it might be seen as better to label them “special” or “slow” or the like rather than putting the proper label on it with a diagnosis, also usually due to the stigma) So yeah, you’ve probably met a fair few more disabled people than you’d think. Best thing you can do with a society like that, besides vocal advocacy, is to just give everyone reasonable accommodations for life under the assumption that they need it if they’re looking for it or benefit from it. Doesn’t mean going super far out of your way to accommodate someone, but things like working with a forgetful friend to find a solution instead of just immediately getting upset over it, going slower and stopping for breaks if someone seems to be struggling to keep up, and just generally giving people a bit more grace than we’re wont to do. That an asking if someone needs help instead of assuming it’s intentional, that they don’t need/want help, or otherwise having an immediate negative verbal reaction.

this is perfect for me! I am working on a game, trying to display how different disabilities effect daily life. I have been struggling to find a way to convey what type of disability is currently active in game, but I think these colours would be a perfect match for it! I'll have to tinker some things around because the way I defined it in the game is slightly different to what u said here purely for the game mechanics but I think it'll definately work and be a nice nod to the community! and to think I was about to pick some random colours and send it... this showed up right on time! edit: it's weird but I'll try to give a short memo of the game. u play as 6 characters going through the same days except every character has a different catagory of disability. the "neurotypical" is the tetorial and the guide to show u what needs to be done. every single "run" after posses different challenges and different ways to get to the same place (ways a lot more complicated and difficult). it's been a project of mine for years and it's still in the works, with my disabilities I dont even know if I can ever finish it, but working on something like that makes me happy. if I ever manage to I'd love to add an aspect of in the ages and perhaps make the indicators more obvioius as the player the.selves and perhaps even the character realizes something is wrong. or maybe make it so they never realize and just think it's normal until a cartain stage in the game. I havent decided yet. I have a strong base concept and cool mechanics in mind but I wannt workshop the story until it's perfect. anyone and everyone is more then welcome to take this idea and make it so much better then I ever could. just remember to give credit to the community in your game, it's the whole point after all. I wish one day to have enough reach to truely make this beautiful project reality, but until then I have to deal with my own challenges and changes as they arise. I hope one day I get to upload that game. or even share the full concept so someone else can do it. until then I'll go on my free hours and tinker around with this concept for a while. feel free to do the same! share your ideas with me! I want to do this in the least offensive way possible, use the world language and the graphics to tell the story. I dont even eant to explain what each "disability" is really, I want the players to get that from experience. all I know for sure is that I want the 4-5 unique different experiences plus the deafult as a way to show in an intuitive way the difference ebtween experiences. not sure in what concept yet because I have like 20 ideas (make it like a dream or a recall of memory or the same person or different peopls) but u get the premise. if people are interested I'll share some of the mechanics I implemented.

We need this in the Southeastern US . Despite the ADA, we're routinely excluded and treated as less-than. Edit: I love the idea of disability pride because I was raised to be ashamed of it. Church people and family treated me like a problem to be fixed, acted like I couldn't do anything, or tried to make me pretend to not be disabled so I didn't get accommodations. Standing my ground and saying "YES, I'M DISABLED, AND THAT'S NOTHING TO BE EMBARRASSED ABOUT" is a big deal to me. It's better than trying and failing to hide for years

Let's do it! Piedmont NC here, and I agree! We need more visibility and more discussions with our local and state governments about how exclusionary the south east is to those with disabilities of all varieties. Or how it seems like (at least here in NC) their interpretation of disability is purely physical. You'll see the bare minimum implemented so wheelchairs can go into SOME places, but there is next to no accommodations for non-physical disabilities and there are modern fixtures of society that are already considered obnoxious by non-disabled people (billboards) that can be a lethal distraction for people with sensory issues who are deemed safe to legally drive. Patterns and designs on billboards are MEANT to grab your attention... How is that not a massive problem for people driving in general? How is there not a standard like on TV of what is too distracting or potentially triggering to a sensory issue? It makes no sense. Or the lack of understanding that someone can be disabled and not be sitting in a wheelchair.

Looking through the comments, I see so many people saying "I don't have pride in my disability." To me this is such a weird take. It kind of strikes me that people don't understand what Pride flags are. You don't really think that people of the LGBTIA+ community are patting themselves on the back for achieving their gender or sexual orientation, do you? It's about taking pride in existing in the face of people who don't want you to exist. It's about taking pride in yourself. I have spent nearly 50 years feeling ashamed of not being able to keep up with my peers. Nearly 50 years of being told that I'm lazy, stubborn, self-indulgent, antisocial, and that I "obviously like being sick". I might not wear that flag, but I'm glad it exists. My earliest memories are fear, shame, and guilt. Maybe it's time I took some pride in the fact that I'm still here and that I've used the abilities that I do have to do some good in the world.

THANK YOU! I am genuinely too fed up with the people dissing on the flag to bother trying to explain this to them. They don't understand that it's meant more for solidarity and a reminder of how we find numerous ways to fight back against adversity. If they legitimately are not interested in solidarity, nor celebrating each achievement that defies the restrictions set by disabilities, I feel that they are too caught up in misery to see the intent. Even if I may not be utilizing this flag, myself, I'm pretty sure a few of those stripes apply to my own reality, and I respect the intent behind the creation of this flag.

I live in Germany, and when my mum and I recently visited England, it seemed disabilities are more… seen there than here. For example, most of the toilets had plaques saying: “Remember, some disabilities aren’t visible”, which was so nice! Also less people seemed confused about her having a wheelchair but still able to get up and stand. In conclusion, it seems the movement really is more prevalent in English speaking countries
@hannahk1306
@hannahk1306 6 месяцев назад
The plaques and signs only started appearing about 5 or so years ago, but they're a great idea especially on things like priority seats on public transport. Having travelled to several countries on the continent, even as an able-bodied person I definitely agree that we're way ahead of other European countries in terms of accessibility and inclusion (which is sad considering we're not doing anywhere near enough). One of the best examples of this is the Paris metro vs the London underground - don't bother with the metro in Paris if you're a wheelchair user and good luck if you're able-bodied with a suitcase! The underground has step-free stations and maps for various accessibility needs (e.g. step free or colour blind) as examples, but a large proportion of the network still has major accessibility issues.

There is gay pride, trans pride, intersex pride, polyamorous pride, non binary pride, black pride, indigenous pride, religious pride, etc, etc. So it makes complete sense for their to also be disability pride and as a Canadian, I am very much looking forward to seeing this widespread in my own country some day.

We use it in France a bit too, but I have to admit I'm pretty uncomfortable with separating neurodivergence and psychiatric disabilities as if not all psychiatric disability were neurodivergence, plus the fact that one is named after a disability led concept and the other after an ableist institution. Souns all lot like "The one that are just different Vs. The one that are mentally ill" and that never really leads to good things. I do still like the flag but it could definitely use some reorganization of the symbolics.
@samarnadra
@samarnadra 8 месяцев назад
The simplest example I can give of the difference is my ADHD vs my depression and anxiety. My ADHD is my brain working differently, not that it isn't functioning the way it should. I have an ADHD brain, it should function neurodivergently. It's a disability because this is a neurotypical world. In heavily neurodivergent spaces, or very accepting and accommodating mostly neurotypical ones, it's just me being me. But my depression and anxiety aren't me being me, they are imbalances in my brain chemistry preventing me from being me. I have also had at least anxiety longer than I can remember, and depression for decades now, so they have shaped who I am, but they are anomalies in how my brain should be functioning. On good days my brain isn't anxious or depressed at all and I am still me, and on good ADHD days, my symptoms don't interfere with stuff, but I still definitely have ADHD and think in an ADHD way. That's why they are separate.

@@samarnadra Anxiety and depression arguably change the functionning of the brain. So they are neurodivergence. Neurodivergence doesn't imply that the divergence is good or bad or neutral, nor does it imply that the divergence is lived as part of the self of an external disease of the self. In the exact same way, some physical disabilities are lived as"just me being me" and some are lived as "my body dysfunctions". Some are disabling regardless of context, some are only disabling because of a context. Same for sensory disabilities. Yet, they are all one single stripe on the flag. It is, also, extremely subjective and more nuanced than that. Maybe you live your ADHD as something that disables you because of a neurotypical society, but I personally absolutely do not. My ADHD is very disabling even in accessible and neurodivergent contexts, even outside of neurotypical and ableist frameworks. But it is also me being me. Those do not oppose. Different people with similar disabilities will feel different about this. The same people will feel different about this at different stage of their lives, this isn't remotely this clearcut. There's no such thing as a disability that is, for all people who have it and at every stage of their life, only disabling in context. But, most important, it's very dangerous to restrict the meaning of neurodivergent as something that should be "just being different not dysfunctional" because it's always going to end up being used to create the group of disabilities (and disabled people) that should be integrated into society vs the undesirable, regardless of whether you personally mean this or not. The very point of the concept of neurodiversity is that there is diversity, and that trying to trace a line between what should be and what shouldn't be is dangerous and eugenistic. The word was created so that we would stop talking about neurological functioning in terms of "sane vs ill". Using it to recreate that binary under a new vocabulary and frame is ableist, dangerous, and ignorant of the struggle of mad people.

As someone in an English speaking country I’ve never seen it before, as someone who also has a family member and significant other with a physical disability I actually really love this Edit: So uh- turns out I am technically on this flag as I have diagnosed ADD/ADHD and potentially autism too (undiagnosed but we’re looking at getting me evaluated)

A feeling of community, not everyone needs it hut some people like feeling apart of a group, it shows they are not alone, but some dont need it because they got it figured it out or just dont have any feeling towards it. Humans are social creatures so a flag connects people sometimes.

I had no idea this was a thing!! I don’t have an official diagnosis because I’m on the waiting list, but from multiple sources (eg teachers thinking I have it, being friends with people with similar but diagnosed and having a family member with a degree in child development and psychology) I have ADHD. I think it’s great to raise awareness, at my old school when I tried to explain stuff like my time blindness of sensory struggles I’d have people eg my form teacher telling me off for js tryna make an excuse for my negative points when it was stuff I genuinely struggled with! Thanks for making this awareness video! ❤

I’m disabled, but I’m not sure I want to be proud of it. Given the choice, I’d change it in an instant. I cannot think of a single time where I’ve been pleased to be disabled. I realize that this isn’t so for others, but I feel it’s very different then say ‘gay pride’ or pride for your nation or heritage. Perhaps the fact that I wasn’t born this way makes a difference.

The pride part is to be proud of how far we've come in terms of accessibility and awareness and to remember how far we still need to go. You don't have to be proud at all, I understand and it's completely fair. Just wanted to clear up that it is not inherently about being proud of being disabled, though it can be for some.

Pride is the opposite of shame. Most disabled people have been made to feel ashamed of their disability at some point. The flag is a symbol of the refusal to be ashamed. I’m disabled, and that sucks. I have to accept that there are some things I’m just not able to do. But I won’t let anyone make me feel ashamed of that fact. This flag is a symbol of that defiance.
@karenneill9109
@karenneill9109 8 месяцев назад
@@nooneinparticular469 I never thought of it that way. I in no way feel ashamed of being disabled, either, possibly because I’m medically disabled, rather than congenitally or traumatically. I do understand how people could be made to feel ashamed of their disability, in which case this makes so much more sense. Thanks for that perspective.
