My parents offered to pay for my dental school 430k in 2016. I declined because I knew it would delay their retirement. They offered to help me with my down payment on a home last year but I declined because it would affect their quality of life in retirement. Things are tight for me and my wife but we are ok with the struggle.

@BenUCLA
@BenUCLA 23 дня назад
@@ft9kop I went to a public state school. My tuition was about average…280k direct cost. Indirect cost such as room/boarding, fees and cost of living added roughly 120k. Add 7.8 percent interest on top. There is not much left after bills and student loan payments. I buy groceries on sale and drive a 15 year old 4runner. I just googled estimated cost of attendance today and for example usc dental’s website list estimated cost first year alone is 175k. Not worth the cost anymore in my opinion. My friends that went into trades have broken 6 figures without the debt and 8 years of opportunity cost.

My wife was a Nurse Practitioner when we met 14 years ago. She is now also a certified nurse midwife and delivers babies. I have been an RN on a telemetry unit for 8 years. Hourly I make more than she does. There are RNs at the facility I work at making more than I do as “market floats”. While some NPs do make more… there are plenty of RN jobs that would surprise you on salary. You also have to factor in as an NP you have WAY more liability. My wife brings work home frequently and is working more days per week (I work 3 x 12 hour shifts / wk). Furthermore, I can pick up a shift almost anytime I want and make extra income. In the past I also worked PRN at a surgical center PACU. There is no shortage of work if you feel like putting in the time. I get that floor nursing is stressful, but being a nurse practitioner isn’t a cake walk either.

A LOT of the reason people don’t seem grown up even in their 30’s and beyond is because their parents brought them up under a lot of control and making them feel like “they can’t” think for themselves like others do. It was very engrained in me and it’s hard to completely let go of that feeling because it’s the only feeling you feel from the connection you had with your parent. (You don’t feel love from your parent you continually feel what can I do to be seen as a person from my parent?)

I dropped my nursing license to stay home with my kids. My husband, after a decade in his job, now makes a high of $57k/gross. His max earnings cap out at $70k/year gross. I stay home and do all the housework, cook dinner, do the dishes, the laundry, etc. My husband only mows the lawn and snow-blows. We are done everything early, and have the weekends free of chores. We can afford to do this because we made huge sacrifices to pay off our debt, and now we continue to spend way below anyone else we know. I can assure everyone that of you have one parent home, one parent at work, and control your spending... it feels like “working as little as possible”. ❤

You can usually rent for around 4 to 500 a month which is cheap rent, and you also get the adventure of moving around to different campgrounds. It’s not a perfect solution but if i were starting over that’s probably what I would do. We lived in rv for a year and a half with 5 kids while building our house so it should be easy for a couple. It’s definitely harder now than when we bought but not impossible as long as you’re willing to put up with some things and get creative.
