▶ Comparison of TLOTR: The Return Of The King 4K (4K DI) HDR10 vs Regular Version 

First: the EE wasn't the original colour grade, the new 4K release is actually a little closer to that, but you can't really tell because the bad HDR codec and in other videos HDR to SDR conversion of RU-vid. I do still prefer the actual original colour grade though, especially in the shire.

@Airock the Great I don't want more saturated colors necessarily. I want the gold and orange hues in Rivendell for instance. Cranking up the saturation will not bring them back.

This is made for HDR, the HDR gonna make the colors pop. This is not for regular screen.

I couldn't speak on my behalf, as I haven't seen the full 4K transfers, but from what I know Peter Jackson and crew did full 4K restorations for all the films

It's just upscaled. You can tell because of the lack of film grain that was digitally removed. If it was a new scan of the negative there would be much, much more film grain.

@@JasonFanny I pretty much figured it was an upscale just because of the cheap price alone. Another example is the cheap price of 4K Back to the Future. That set is so cheap that it has to be an upscale. Which is disappointing, as I wish they would go back to the original film negatives, and then digitally re-composite all of the elements together to get rid of matte lines and to better blend all of the elements together. Like the fire trails under the Doc and Marty.

@@colt5189 Back to the Future is definitely not an upscale. They usually only use upscaling for movies like Lord of the Rings, that were made using a digital intermediate.

@@PhonyHorse With the price of the Back to the Future 4K being so cheap, I doubt they went back to the film and rescanned it in 4K. I'm betting they took their original scan from the Blu-Ray, did some HDR stuff, and then slapped it on the 4K. Looking at images, I don't see any increase in detail with the 4K compared to the Blu-Ray.
