Miss your old vhs visuals but understated they must’ve been very time consuming to make, But still your my first port of call when it comes to hearing what a new synth can really do. Happy you came back 😃
The Prophet 6 is a workhorse of a synth, and makes it in almost every track I create. Sounds great, is reliable, with good built in efx and sequencer...you cant go wrong with it.

Having just read your review, I’m pretty aligned with your sentiments. With that said, I also greatly appreciate the straightforward simplicity and elegance of the P6 interface. Sure, it’s not a sound designer’s playground, but it’s well-suited to a certain style of music and playing. The core sound of the synth is raw enough to feel exciting, and it has just barely enough synth personality via the polymod section to get a little weird. Sometimes I play my P6 and I want more synthesis, but it’s got enough magic where it counts. I think it’s a wonderful instrument. There aren’t many modern synths that are just one big sweet spot, and the older I get, the more I appreciate a synthesizer that really invites you to go on a non-stop sonic adventure. It’s a shame that it’s too expensive.
Tone-wise your recordings sound much clearer and the mid-range is rounder and more pleasant than my Prophet 6. I'm guessing it must be cheap assed converters in the Focusrite Scarlett gen2 and even cheaper assed cables. What are you recording your gear through? Also the factory presets apparently sound bad because they are all pushing filter drive to the max and I've heard it's recommended never go past 50% mix level with two oscillators, Program Volume at full, Master Vol around 65% of max. I hear an unpleasant distortion(noisy,shrill, no extra fullness) in the post-amp stage if I drive the P6 too much. Did you follow similar gain staging?
Hi! Since day one I've always used a generic, cheap audio card and standard cables in my demos. Just the stuff that the majority of people are using. As for the gain staging the answer is yes; instead of pushing the osc volume to the max I always pay attention to their levels and rather treat this parameter as yet another potential stage for creative sound design.
I'm thinking now some of what I'm hearing is aisleing in playback. Tried a different resampler and it sounds alot closer to your video. Thanks as always for the great sound design!
Sounding good. But I agree with your review. I was left a bit dissappointed when I saved up, got a Prophet 6, was excited to finally have one 'great' synth. Only to find the oscillators, and filters left me feeling a bit 'meh' and the flexibility feels very limited nowadays. I liked it for those Imaginary Softwoods reedy pads, like in your demo. But still sold it in the end. And to answer your question, in my case, I preferred to instead get a Peak, Digitone and Microfreak. (and recently changed the Microfreak out for a Hydrasynth Explorer). For programming, I think I got more enjoyment out of my old Prophet '08, with it's skippy pots. And Polyevolver was much more interesting too. And if I was to ever get a Prophet again, I'd go for a very recent one, Take 5 ... or all the way Back to 'Future' with a Prophet 600 gligli.
"One great synth" is an illusion;) Haven't played the Prophet-08 but I bought the Take~5 and I have to say it seems to have a stronger flavor than the P-6. I'll be making a demo some time in 2023;)
