After suffering my spinal cord injury i have really had to adapt in life. So Im showing you my disability lifestyle to raise disability awareness. As a disabled woman and a woman in a wheelchair who is paralysed, I thought it would be interesting for you to see, and hopefully give you some inspiration and motivation so that you can live more independently. wether you are paraplegic or quadriplegic I hope that I can help you. The wheelsnoheels message is “so no one has to feel alone.”
I have lots of interesting disability videos, a lot of videos on how to cope with a disability and living life in a wheelchair, wether you are a girl boy woman or man. i have some paraplegic exercise videos, and advice. its important to keep your fitness levels up as much as possible as this can when physically and mentally with depression.

Honest to goodness tables with a central post are uncomfortable for most humans with knees (ouch), but I’d never considered how frustrating it would be to find a table to fit a wheelchair under/around. I imagine cafes or bars with cocktail-height tables only are incredibly frustrating.

I love Claire’s but I’m always knocking things off the back of my powerchair lol x I hate shops that don’t have automatic doors, it’s a nightmare to get through with a wide wheelchair. But I do find people are so helpful x

I could relate to so much of this video! There are shops I avoid (like Claire's, Accessorize etc) because they're impossible to navigate in a wheelchair (and also shops that have loads of boxes etc on the floors). Doors are also a nightmare, although I don't tend to go out on my own so have someone to help. And I feel your pain with the table issue - I always end up spiking stuff on my lap because I'm so far from the table! Love your videos Gem - it's great seeing hints and tips from a fellow chair user xx

This video has a whole different meaning now I used to watch you to help me as a sort of able-bodied person to help those in wheelchairs (including my sister) in the correct way, bit now my sister has an electric wheelchair its tips and tricks for her too. Thankyou for sharing Also The Works and Claire's are a nightmare for Autism and SPD too 😠 drives me up the walls people just dont think.

My able bodied friends are sometimes baffled at how many things I need to research when going to somewhere new. Steps, toilet,... I mean, they just go and don't care, but people using wheelchairs need to know these important things.

've had two Permobil powerchairs so far and I've always fit fine through single doors. Of course there may be bigger powerchairs, but in my experience they are designed to - and do - fit almost everywhere. :)

4:30 that is the kind of help I get sometimes. This man is trying to be helpful but is blocking the door. I almost squished a helpful man once. I don't blame anyone they are trying to help it just turns out the help isn't helpful. 🤣 I love the way you handled it. I try to never be mean to someone that whose intentions are good.

I've been complaining about stores that aren't accessible especially stores that are big companies. Many have heavy doors and no way to ask for help

God's waiting room I have heard people call Worthing West Sussex , I love Worthing as I use to live in Chichester not far away by train . I find people are very helpful and always offer to open the doors to shops , it is annoying with the pull cords in some loos though .but you get that in most areas across the UK . .

As a single person I encounter it more quickly I think standing alone somewhere in front of a store with doors I can't open myself or where they have to put a ramp. I then google them and call them that I am outside. Actually goes really fast.

The Works is the worst for piles of stuff crammed between the displays. I only go shopping a few times a year (and my partner has to push me) but the last couple of times we've been in the Works I've got stuck near the entrance and had to just point at stuff from across the shop to my partner (which was really frustrating and I felt very trapped), the second time we knocked into a display and then just decided to shove things out the way as the staff didn't offer any help. Retail parks are so much easier, we tend to stick to those or online shopping.

Great video, I'm really surprised about doors, when i was assessed for my chair at the hospital. I was taught how to open doors, go up and down ramps etc even road safety.

the works is my most favorite store ever (im really crafty) and luckily the one in my town is really accessible (big isles, loads of space, very flat) but other towns ive been to the stores are so small and i cant get in! its so frustrating aswell because i love the store so much (the ladies who work in my local are so so so so nice to me aswell as i go there so often 😂)

It's super nice when the public try to help with doors etc but it's also so embarrassing when you're on your own just trying to draw as little attention to yourself as possible and they start making a fuss trying to get the other side of a double door unlocked! Or when they try to hold the door open for you but they're just in the way and you're going to end up going over their toes!

Great tips there - the little pick-pack thing is cute - I haven't seen that before - I'm a wheelchair newbie!! Thank you for your great encouragement and positivity - I got strength & courage from watching you & tried out the supermarket trollies last week & went out on the street in my chair instead of just the supermarket for the first time since I've been home - I can't thank you enough! Good on ya! You have your morning planned which is a big plus for us wheelchair users. Nice to see the bathrooms so clean there. Can definitely relate to the jacket thingy. Well jeans in my case. Was in TjMax today and couldn't be arsed trying on the jeans that I was interested in. So they just went in the bag anyways. Too much hassle👖😅

The Claire's Stores in this country, Are in an indoor mall. and have gates for each store. that stay up until, the store closes. All ! the malls are like that. Except, for the ones that have doors on the outside of the building . But i prefer, the indoor malls. And your right, It is hard to go into Clair's...Even, In an indoor mall. Because it's Such a Small place land is ALWAYS!!! Crowded. 👩🏻‍🦽

Omg Wow the claire's at my local mall here in the US has a way more accessible enterance and layout than that one just seems so unreal... i'm not in a wheelchair but, i can definitely see what you're talking about with having a congested sales floor and the frustration of it. I seriously don't know how many times i've walked into a store like that and my backpack(which btw isn't a ridiculously large backpack) has bumped into a rack or shelf and gotten hung on various merchandise or knocked something over.

Can I say the I have to use a wheelchair as I had a below the knee amputation about a month ago. Unfortunately I only have a basic N.H.S. chair but your videos have inspired me to get out and about and to use my car with the chair. Hoping for a better chair.

Some pleases have a doorbell type thing that you can press and someone will come and help you with a door or bring a ramp out or something.

I just got a powerchair. I went shopping on my own for the first time and found getting inside to be a trick. I'm right-handed and use the right hand on the joystick. How do I open a door with my right hand to get inside when I need it to go forward? I almost busted a store's door. It's funny how you don't think of these things until it's a case of the door opens to the right and only the right and you have to get through and use the same hand to move yourself.

You can phone the shop the day before to ask if they will put a ramp out or allow you access. If they’re not helpful don’t go and especially don’t spend your money in there. 😉 Great post as always Gem, I do big retail parks as they’re normally easy access. I feel for you trying to go shopping in Brighton, Nottingham (Hockley) is a struggle too ⛰🦽😳 Manchester is pretty accessible 🤗🥰🤗

Still have to put the Caddy luggage holders out there! Best wheelchair accessory ever for shopping trips or traveling ;) And I tend to prefer shopping centers with many shops under the same roof, rather than shopping streets where you have to go outside between each shop. I find the centers to be generally more accessible and have better parking along with smooth surfaces, all while a high street situation can mean longer distances and cobblestone or other uneven terrain to go on to get to and from car and between shops. And with me pretty much always freezing, I appreciate the better temperatures of a shopping center too with less time spent outdoors. If I get cold it can take hours to warm up again, and my freezing reaction can be delayed too so I can start freezing up to a few hours after actually getting cold, and I just freeze all the way into my bones. Right now I’m freezing after a shower and it feels like my spinal fluid is liquid nitrogen and that definitely doesn’t help my chronic pain!

I always do eventually, even though it usually takes several hours under the blankets in bed. I use heating pads and such as well at times but I overheat easily too so a lot of the time it’s better to just use my regular blanket and maybe a housecoat and a pair of socks rather than heating pads as the heating pads get so warm so fast

Emma service animal handler and now an ambulatory wheelchair user and even before when it was just me and the dog we would avoid really tight shops like Claire’s because it’s so tight that things on his vest would accidentally catch him and pull off items on shelves so I would bump into something or my backpack would and now with the wheelchair it’s just impossible even if he walks behind my chair.

I use my wheels as a battering ram to push open doors and block/push against the door for pull doors to prevent the door from closing/pushing me back Am now a C8 incomplete quad so lack the arm strength I had as a lower level para

Wheelchair on the camber, fighting it on the camber wastes spoons. There's no way I'd be able to navigate Claire's with my rollator walker or my wheelchair. They're too wide for the store. It's annoying that there's no enforceable regulations for aisle width in stores, to ensure they are navigable by the disabled. There's stores here in Brisbane I'd love to be able to access, but the aisles are simply too narrow to manage to enter. Centre column tables are a nuisance for accessaability. The problem you encountered, and also, the feet of the table limit how far under the table your front castors can go. But not only that, there's also the issue of stability for an ambulatory disabled, if when getting out of the chair, you put some weight on the table to stabilise yourself as you're standing up to transfer to your mobility aids. A centre column table can far more easily overbalance that instance, than a table with legs at each corner. I wonder how nosy, other customers in shops now are towards vloggers? How would you manage shop doors, if you could not do that catapulting trick?

In Canada, I have a few stores I can wheel to without a car (not in winter if the sidewalk plows haven't been round yet), but once there, always encounter access issues. I really like shopping at Marks Work Wearhouse but while they have a big U shaped huge wide path in the store, I can't venture off it to acutally go in and look at clothes as the racks are too tight together. I tried once and pulled the whole rack down and got stuck and hot and frustrated. I told them about it but I was so upset. Also my local Starbucks is awful. They have 2 sets of double doors. One set has an automatic button, the other doesn't . ??!! This one is usually left open but they close it during winter as we get to -40C (in summer it can be +40C so it balances out). I have called them out on social media and had a response but nothing has been done. Just when you have worked up the confidence to do a solo trip, something like this happens, which can really shake your confidence to try again. Good for you for going. You must've been having a good day. :)

My personal belief is that you shouldn't "avoid" those shops that have aisles that are too tight. I go in just to point out or make it obvious their store is keeping a segment of the population out. The USA CDC estimates 20% of the population uses some kind of wheelchair. BTW, my powerchair is narrower than my manual wheelchair. It isn't a small difference either. Since the wheels on the powerchair are under you instead of beside you I go from 36" width in manual to 25" width in the powerchair. Also please be careful how you open those manual heavy doors in a manual chair. It is how I ended up in a powered chair. I have messed up my left shoulder to the point that I can no longer push with it. I once over rotated it messing that shoulder up. Then once after that I tangled my hand in the large door pull as I went through. Due to the hill It caught and pulled muscles in that arm and shoulder further damaging it to the point that I can no longer push on carpet, a hill, or other difficult situations.

My least favourite shop is a Greg's in Wakefield that has steps up to the entrance and sign that says to ring the bell for the ramp, but they've put the button at the top of the stairs! I noticed this a year ago and spoke to them and they still haven't fixed it.

In the US, if there aren't automatic doors there's usually supposed to be a big button that will open the door for you. Granted I have had middling success with them actually working. Do they ever have something like that in the U.K.?

Gem since watching your videos I’m always noticing that when I go to public loos and there’s a red energy cord the cleaners have almost always tied them up. My local costa I go in every week and I don’t think Iv ever used the loo (it’s wheelchair accessible) and the cord wasn’t tied up. So I always lower/untie the red cord so if anyone falls they can pull the cord.

@@Wheelsnoheels it's on the right hand side of the door, at the bottom of the ramp, it sticks out a bit so that what made me think it could be, hopefully it is as it would be a shame if they didnt do something more to help

so is it not "bad" to offer an open door to wheelchair users? i know you've said before something about liking to do things yourself and that you actually can, but i generally let the door open for anyone if they're coming as i'm going (or vice versa) - but i would never want it to come off as rude or like i didn't think they could manage...

riley it’s not bad to offer to open a door for anyone. It’s only bad when the able bodied person doesn’t listen about how to help. A lot of us have had situations where “help” was forced on us and then we got hurt, or the person made things harder on us by not listening on how to help. As long as you listen and don’t interfere with what the person is doing, or interfere with their service dog (if they have one), helping can be great.

I am so disappointed of my country I live in Norway and I am trying to go to the shop it’s always difficulty to get in the door people are you just ignoring me and looking so Weird on me
