Today we will be Tattooing several pieces/brands of Fake Skin, in order to find the best fake skin to practice on. I start with the thinnest and cheapest fake skin then slowly move along to what I think is the best of the bunch. We will start off by laying down a stencil on each piece to see how well the fake skin takes the stencil and how well the stencil holds up after only drying for a short 10 min. Next I will begin lining each piece using the CNC Q2 and a 9 tight round liner. Also we will be shading the fake skin with a mag needle using both the whip shading technique and the pendulum shading technique. The products used in the video are REEL SKIN, POUND OF FLESH and 2 off brands one very thin and the other a bit thicker. Big thank you to Mike Johnson for sending these skins in for us to test out!! Below are some links to where you can find these skins. There are other places you can find these as well these are just the places I found them at.

I just started to practice tattooing and I agree 100% on the first fake skin you tested out. I did not like it at all, it didn’t wipe well and the ink just smeared and would not come out. I believe I have the 3rd one you tattooed and I hit much better results. Hey Dave, for the Reelskin: rubbing in a little talc powder before applying your stencill stuff really helps with bleeding, smearing and keeps the stencil on a little longer!

If you hit your stencil (after applying it) with a hair dryer on high heat holding it roughly 1/4-1/2” away from the skin for a couple minutes and then let it sit for 10 mins, you won’t have to wait overnight.

So glad you made this video. When I first started I of course used the thin horrible skins. I was discouraged for quite some time because of non stop issues with it, the staining, shredding it while trying to color pack, how hard it was to get ink to stick etc. I wasn't sure if I needed better cartridges, if my machine was bad, I just had no idea why it was such a pain. It was a couple years ago but man that stuff was awful. I rarely use skins anymore unless I'm trying out new promotional goodies but i use the no name thick stuff too. The other 2 brands are good for beginners since its easier to work with but not worth the cash once you have your bearings. I love your channel and your support of self taught artists. There isn't enough love for the self taught peeps. I see the comments in your videos and sometimes I'm like "ohhhhh heckkkk no" but then I remember that I started in my kitchen and how its better to spread love and education then judge those who are still learning. Thanks for always reminding me to keep my roots at the front of my brain and to share love not judgement ♡

Very thorough review. I used all except pound of flesh. My resumee: I would stick with the normal fake skin (number 3 in your ranking). Why? The reel skin rips easily on bigger pieces and somehow it never really becomes dry and begins to stink rotten & moldy after some time. I don't know why, because that doesn't happen with other fake skins. The difference between the normal fake skin and the reelskin is mostly the strechability. And that's something that really doesn't matter that much on fake skin. Because the stencil goes off so easily I usually avoid stretching the reelskin properly as I would with skin anyways and the price difference is something to keep in mind. Also the normal fake skin often has holes on the sides to attach to a bottle to learn tattooing on uneven surfaces which is a big plus. Stay with the normal fake skin, everything else is just playing around but really not that necessary. It's anyways different to tattoo on real skin, no matter if you practiced with reelskin or normal fake skin. Once you know how to tattoo on skin you can easily just try out new techniques on the normal fake skin.

Thanks for the vid and your welcome for the skins. we are in agreement about the skins, but it's still nice to hear a 2nd opinion. the POF site says it's ok to tattoo both sides but the 2 sides are not the same. one side is vary smooth, and the other is not. pretty sure the smooth side is the side touching the mold. anyway the 2 sides take and hold the stencil differently, just keep that in mind. also there is a trick to the REELskin, people either will wrap it around a roll of paper towels and tape it to keep it stretched or do like i did and use some thumb tacks and foam board to hold it while tattooing. keep up the good work, the videos are really appreciated. - Mike Johnson

No thank you for sending the skins it!! It was great to finally give Reel skin and POF a try as many people have asked me what I think of them in the past. And I would have never known that you could tattoo both sides of the POF cause like you said both sides are different but still good to know you can make the fake skin go further (more value for money there). I see why you pinned the reel skin, its deff stretchy and thats not a bad thing but yeah ill deff find a way to get it stretched a bit better next time I give it a go. Thanks again MIKE really do appreciate you donating those skins to the channel as I think it should really help others out!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🙏🙏🤘🤘🤘🤘

great video, I'm a realism artist and I've used fake skins before. I think reel skin is the best as it's very stretchy , I find that if u set it up around a rolled up towel in suran wrap and tape it down with tape and apply a slight stretch in it feels the most realistic to practice, however blacks will not be totally saturated but slightly milky as the tattoo progress, but I like how it will tear if you do too many passes letting a learner learn to be efficient without creating too much trauma..

Reelskin sells 6lbs. of "seconds" for around $100 (you can get discount codes signing up for their email) but its scrap cutoff pieces- all descent sizes. They also sell 2lbs. Of seconds which may include hands or arm mess ups or parts. Just putting it out there!

Thank you for all of your videos. They have been a big help. I am a night shift worker and I am looking to learn how to tattoo since I have a lot of sit down time at night, I have purchased the mast tour pro and was curious if you had recommendations on what size needles I should be using to learn my lines and to learn shading. I just purchased the pound of flesh rectangle from this video because sadly I was trying to learn on that same cheap fake skin you showed first in the video and it was not going very well at all and a friend stated that it was way to cheap and thin. Any recommendations on needle sizes for someone just beginning to learn? Thanks again man.

Hey bud, I use reelskin exclusively I’ve had luck with cleaning it with alcohol to get any residual oils off before applying the stencil then I let the stencil dry overnight or I use a hairdryer or heat gun to set it faster just a tip I use hope it helps keep up the great vids godbless

The first time I used reel skin I was familiar with the cheaper stuff out there so as usual I approached it with a faster machine and more aggressively. What I realised is that I had to adjust the machine to what i would run in on human skin. The other thing that appeared to me was that the thickness was just right to be able to find the right depth and going too deep means blow out on human skin so I found that really valuable and also when I ran the machine faster I noticed that it cuts straight through it just like it would on a human skin. The third thing was stretching Reel skin. You stretch it goes in you don’t it’s patchy and inconstant. Ofc the other stuff that you tried is good to learn how to run smooth lines and get used to the hand motion and the techniques of shading but being able to observe these 3 fundamentals ( right depth, hand/machine speed and remembering to stretch ) as a mentor and to learn from it as an apprentice makes Reel skin the No1 fake skin out there. The only downside is that you have to leave the stencil for over night to dry but that could be down to the stencil primer I use ( stencil stuff and electrum ). I hope my comment is in anyone’s help. Buy Reel skin you won’t regret it.

Ok I have bought ALOT of skins none compare enough to human skin to justify the cost. So now I practice on craft foam from Hobby Lobby, it’s softer like skin, it takes and holds a line. A little Hard to clean but, I just use Vaseline first then again to clean and it is .79 for a 12x 18” piece. It’s thicker than the cheap skins, takes ink IMO like soft human skin, I did find if I burnish the surface with the back of a spoon it will make the surface a little less porous. It will take a stencil and shows lines so clean you don’t really need to wipe it. With a mag it’s pretty stipply so not sure it’s good for practice to see results with the bigs sets.

I agree, after trying real skin its pretty cool stuff. And price does play a roll as much as I like reel skin and pound of flesh I see myself continuing to use the thicker yellow sheets. But If I had never tattooed actual skin before it would be best to at least try reel skin or pound of flesh to see if it helps prepare you for actual skin. But for me and the channel ill stick with the thicker yellow stuff for now. Thanks again Bostjan appreciate the continued support!! 🤘🤘🤘

I use the crappy first fake skin. I definitely have the wipe away issue and “blow out” through the back but I figure it’s ok because the fake skin is 1 mm thick. And I want to get used to going 2 mm thick. I lay the skin on top of paper towel to give somewhat of a cushion feel and gain the second mm of thickness. I have a second fake skin under the paper towel (almost like a sandwich) as long as I don’t penetrate the second skin I know I haven’t passed 2 mm. Also I wanted to know how I can send my fake skin practice pieces or even pictures for you to critique. I’ve only been rattling for 1 month and I’ve already moved to real skin just out of frustration with the fake skin. So far so good.
