The Federal .410 four 000 Buck 2.5" from the S&W Governor in a 10% Clear Ballistics test. Rated at 850 FPS. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.com/user?u=5828221
Basically, a firing squad of 32 acps per trigger pull but with a slightly wider diameter for each wound channel. 25 yards with all pellets on target out of a 3inch barrel is mind-blowing actually.
A good analogy but I suspect that .32 ACP will penetrate further because of the shape of the projectiles? Maybe more like being hit by a bunch of .32 Shorts which I suspect wouldn't do the intended target any good.
Impressive results, thanks for producing this informative review. 7-12 yards is the most realistic self defense scenario distance. But even farther out the revolver and ammo grouped quite sufficiently.
410 000 federal buck is an outstanding personal and home defense round from this platform. You won’t be undergunned with it. The gel and the steel don’t lie. Keep some 45 Colt Wadcutters for reloads.
@@rangefinderz5135 If I'm at home a 12 gauge tossing twelve 00 balls over 1400 fps make most pistols a joke. If I'm carrying then attempting precise shots in what may be a crowded area, it's a joke. This is a relatively large revolver with limited usefulness. I've not seen one channel that recommends this as an EDC. At best its a nightstand or car gun. Even then there are better options. Would you rather have this or 16 rounds of 9mm and a spare mag going through a known gang area? Can you reload this faster than a shotgun? Bet you can't. Even the cylinder bound on him. That's poor reliability in a situation you're betting your life on. It does nothing better than what other guns are designed to do. It's a screwdriver hammering a nail.
@@rangefinderz5135 First the video isn't of a 410 shotgun. It's of a pistol. Second, Yes. 4 slugs have less of a chance than 12 slugs. Smaller projectiles have less of a chance than larger projectiles. You should probably go lol at your physics and math teachers.
@@rangefinderz5135 The recoil with the regular 410 buckshot is severe at 1300 in a Governor..Federal must have seen that in the testing,, and dialed the propellant down.. making the control a partner in the accuracy..I tested the regular stuff in mine,,and the Federal was a lot easier to get back on target
@@GunSam I believe that the number 4 buck Federal .410 load is only available in a 3” shell. I have fired them out of a Bond Arms Ranger .45/.410 with 4.25” barrels and the pattern was not nearly as good as the 000 buck loads.
@@GunSam It's junk. It's pattern is huge and I doubt the #4 buck has the mass to penetrate adequately out of a handgun. Might be ok in an actual shotgun.
Very good video! This is the round that I have chosen for home defense for my Governor. I've shot the Federal .410 handgun 000 buckshot a number of times at the range. I can attest to the 4 balls/pellets consistently maintaining very tight groups at distances from 18 feet or closer. This is very good when you consider the distances you would engage an armed intruder(s) in your home during a home invasion. I really appreciate the ballistic gel test results. They've given me even more confidence in this round. Seems like I made a good choice. Great job making this video. Thanks!
Haaaaaaa “there can be only one”… ⚡️You’re killing me smalls ….. I saw that thumbnail and just about lost it. Dude that is hysterical……. I’m sure I’m not the only one that caught that. Good video Sam
SAM! SUPER GLAD YOU FINALLY GOT SOME TO TEST! I use the Hornady Triple defense because I have yet to find any federal 000 Buck. I do have some Agulla? I think was the brand. But I haven't tested it out yet.
First of all, this is the best video I've seen using the best self defense ammo you can buy. Someone below mentioned "naked attacker" lol. I have often wondered why no one ever puts out a video like this with clothes, bone, soft tissue? Very well done. My concern is over penetration. How my house is set up an attacker breaking in the front door would stand in front of the wall to my sons bedroom. I don't want to shoot them with a 12gauge or .223 and have the bullet go through the wall and hit my son. So to see a round that will produce deadly effects and not travel through to injure other people is fantastic. I own a Taurus Judge. IMHO the 45/410 style pistol is the best overall pistol you can own. Is it the best at everything, NO. Can it do everything, YES. Nightstand & vehicle defense: the best for my situation. Walking through snake infested woods and not carrying a shotgun, best. Ability to deter/kill an attacking animal (bear/mt lion), OK. Ability to provide small game for food, OK. Concealed Carry, OK/Poor. It's just a big gun with only 5/6 shots. What other option is there that can shoot soo many types of loads in such a small package?
@@wizkaqueefa9003 that 410 out of handgun is crushing more tissue than 45acp. Four .36 calibers at the same time is a ridiculous amount of damage. For reference, a 9mm fmj is .36 diameter. It's already proven to penetrate deep enough to kill, and hole is .36 times 4. The judge can shoot a 3inch shell, that's FIVE. 36 calibers at once.
@@robarmstrong5404 lethality is different then effective or ethical. You are responsible for every projectile the leaves your gun and with most rounds out of a 410 revolver you run the risk of missing the target with one or more of the pellets, it has to stop somewhere and if you hit an Innocent bystander in the process of defending yourself you are going to be held accountable. And it's not a factor you can train for. With most other firearms you can train to limit the chances of missing. But not when significant chances of missing are build Into the platform you are shooting.
Don’t own a .410 revolver but I know several folks that do. If any of them ask me for a carry ammo recommendation I’ll know what to recommend. Thanks for this video! Don’t know if you have a clue how interesting and entertaining your channel is.
Really good job on displaying the parameters of that 410 load. Most hate these 410 revolvers but I think this load in the Govenor coupled with an Crimson Trace laser sight would be very good for an home weapon and even an possible carry weapon but it's quite large. I see the Govenor primarily as an 45colt revolver and that is an great and effective place to be. The 410 part with regular shot would be an stellar vermin snake piece and I can envision this being an wonderful outdoorsman piece in 45colt/410 where there lots of reptiles and 45colt is no slouch when running 250gr for beasties. Other than the size of the Govenor there's enough to like about it and I'd love to try one at some point.
Don't forget, a snub nose .38+p with Underwood's 158gr Keith HC beastly load, will penetrate a 3inch piece of ballistic gel, followed by a 4x4 hunk of pine post, followed by 7 inches of water jug, and almost pass through a piece of 3/4 inch plywood.
Another great video. I like the naked attacker test then a real world attacker test. It shows that bare gel just isn't a real world ammo test. You're also the only person that I've seen that understands that a revolver is the only gun that lists the Real barrel length. Simi autos, single shot, pump, bolt and lever action guns all include the chamber in the listed barrel length. The true barrel length is from where the rifling starts to the muzzle. Can't wait for the next video bro.Stay safe and free.
What federal does unlike the others is their wad. It locks all the OOO pellets into the rifling hence making them engage the rifling like a round ball and patch out of a muzzle loader. Best 410 handgun load out there hands down. I'm really surprised other company's haven't taken note yet on this.
@@simplicityrm It's ridiculous this "gimmick" has to rely on Federal's specialty to be worthy of any true 410 performance reliability. It's ridiculous that Federal knows this and also that people hobby this "gimmick" and won't maintain a steady supply to be obtained for regular usage. It's ridiculous no other brand imitates the blueprint. It's ridiculous I've purchased a "gimmick " and various ammo that won't shed a drop of blood from a squirrel 10-15 yards away, just bc its not Federal's specialty 😒
@@mikeprice8307 well the not fully sure what your truly referring to as the gimmick. The federal load with the buckshot is honestly the only one that I tested that performed well. I mean to me 410 as a defensive tool with the federal OOO load does actually work quite well for that purpose. The others I'll aggree are pretty useless for about anything. Centrifical force of rifling makes shot spread like crazy. For anyone not knowing that sadly that's their own fault for not listening in science class in school and not being able to think for themselves.
@@simplicityrm the gimmick I'm referring to is the gun itself. Of course the .45 aspect is not what's grabbing fans. That's what I'm saying this gun has to rely on Federals specialty ammo to function worthwhile.
This is the exact gun and loadout I keep in the car and carry also keep another one in the nightstand drawer. For home defense I think the Judge with 410 shotshells is the way to go. I'd rather fire 4 rounds over a single any day when the pressure is on in a defense situation. Can't imagine any defense situation you'd be shooting over 15 yards, let alone 25, but nice to know you can.
I've had so many people proudly exclaim to me after finding out I'm a "gun guy" that they have one of "those pistols that shoots shotgun rounds!" I usually rattle off the common manufacturers names and mention they also chamber .45 Colt...99% of the time eyes glaze over and I get the hesitant. "Yeahhhhh...one of those" because A) They don't know the manufacturer and B) they have no clue what .45 Colt means or that their firearm chambers it. These are usually the folks sold the pistol by one of those jackass salesman that somehow still believes "You just need a shotgun. You don't need to aim!"
This 000B load tested is the Least Worst option , to use in inherently flawed concept .45/ .410 Revolvers . As it performs from Sam's gun . the performance actually rises to the level of * somewhat usable , in certain circumstances *
@@margarethouse404 I'd say that's more than somewhat usable a house situation. You get a short barrel for clearing corners that can accurately deliver multiple deadly wounds per 1 trigger pull. Just 2 shots is like full cylinder of a eight shot 32 revolver. Eight individual wound channel, 8 different chances to strike a vital. Thats no joke. And I acknowledge the gun sucks with most any other ammo. So massive disparity in performance.
it's basically a three shot burst musket. what's not to like? at the range... 1st within 35y this mfker is going to do to mini musket things. your front door is probably within 35 yards of your kids bedroom... you probably have drywall unless you have a fireplace barrier, live in a stone house, or have a log cabin... now i'm wondering about adobe. 2nd it's a revolver you're limited on shots, that's exactly what I want in the middile of the night when i'm half asleep and stumbling around; only half a dozen reasons why not... 3rd it's kinda heavy... which sure recoil... but... why do i care about recoil if i'm looking for seriously low penetration ammunition? that idea in itself is bad for home defense, if you need the weight you're goona over shoot. It's a fun gun, i like the concept I love the musket ball tearing and the damage potential of the weapon, it's application and use... i mean... it's a gun for people that don't own guns. ive settled on subsonic 300bo or subsonic 22lr in carbines and subsonic . subsonic10mm in pistols, straight falling out of the barrel. or the slowest heaviest slugs i can find in 12g. people qq about the 22's stopping power, whatever, it's lethality is literally all i care about. compensate for stopping power with huge magazines insane rates of fire and zero recoil. if someones wearing plate breaking into your house, or even kevlar vests, it's probably the cops and you're probably screwed. (just read my own shit, uhm i don't mean you literally you. also people should really press their own ammo it's cheaper and you get so much more flexibility of load.)
Looks like a nice load, and living up to its hype. Doesn't make a bit of diff to me here in Kalifornia, since we can't have anything shorter than 18.5" barrel that fires a shotshell. But if i ever mve to a free state, i might get one. Would probably make a good under the coffee table gun. 2 or 3 rounds of buck backed up with 45 Colt hp's. A full length 410 shotgun is surprisingly capable for defense. There have been a number of stories in recent years of older children or teens having to defend their families with 22 rifles or 410's. Good to know there is some effective ammo out there.
If I HAD to chose between getting shot with this buckshot and a typical self defense 357 single trigger pull to my torso, I'd rather get hit w a 357. There's a chance that single wound channel could miss vital structures. I just don't buy that four of these buckshot will somehow miss everything, especially the way they starburst on impact into different directions.
Yes this is a very good load for this gun - if u can find it - i was able to find a box of it at a recent gun show - for $60 - like u I saved the last 6 shells!
Funny thing about gel tests is very few people are in fact 10 inches from front to back. I am about four inches from chest to back so if somebody shoots me with one of those gun there is a very good chance all four pellets would pass clean through unless they hit a bone then they might stop. However it really depends on the distance.
I learned that the pellet that remains spherical is the first one out of the barrel. The other 3 are flattened from rubbing against the barrel on their way out.
Last time I was up at the range a guy had a radar unit. He had it beside the gun pointed down range and it measured the speed of the bullet leaving the shooting line. Finally, something to measure speed that cannot get shot.
I have debated getting one, then on the other hand I do usually get reads just fine, almost worth it to take the chance as replacement is only about $100. I still have my old one and if I am not mistaken, it will still work if hooked to my phone on the caldwell app. I should try it
@@GunSam Why can you just cover up the display part with some particle board until the shooting is done then check the results? Or would that interfere somehow with the reading?
The 25 yard hits are very impressive. I felt the main problem with the Governor using.410 was accuracy past 10 yards. With this round it’s not an issue. It is basically like getting hit with 4 .32ACP at once so I never doubted the punch of the gun I just thought it was limited to 10 yards or less.
I am blown away literally, I have to say for now i have "poor man's judge" from sub caliber 26.5 mm flare gun insert 1-1/2" barrel left from where the shell is 2.5" 4 inch barrel insert 45 colt/410 bore and one shot only, its only one i will use 100% thanks to your video .these 410 buckshot here is good for them derringer bond arms like .50" only of barrel these would be only ones I trust with that non-existant barrel half inch left, only 1 i would use any 410 bore short barrel.
I've shot a lot of the federal ammunition out of my judges and my governor and it is very good stuff. Throws a very good pattern even out at distance. It's what I choose to carry in my guns.
I’ve seen another test with that 410 shell and it resulted in the same disfigured pellets, which made me worry about pellets flying off course, but you have shown that’s not the case.
I’ve fired this ammo and the 3” 5 pellet 000 buck federal .410 load out of Bond Arms derringers with barrels ranging from 3.5” to 6” and they patter very tightly out to 10 yards.
This vid cycled back around and I'm still impressed by Federal! I shoot Remington's pistol-specific 2.5" 000 buck 3 balls at 1300 fps and get similar grouping consistency out of my Governor. She handles the increase in pressures like a champ. From another post, the recoil is significant compared to Federal's dialed down 1225 fps pressure.
I feel if you an get a extra long firing pin from Cylinder and Slide you will have it covered. I have used one on my 460V S&W X-frame revolver because it has been altered by TK Custom to take 45 ACP moon clips. And using rimmed cartridges like 45 Colt and 45 Casull without a moon clip the extra long firing pin creates reliable ignition.
Anyone that wants to see the buckshot in slow motion...Jerry Miculek "The Return of the Governor"...youtube.. He tested various ammo at 12 feet. The Federal 000 is included...
That flat spotting might be caused by being fired - there will be two pellets with double flat spots - the interior pellets getting it from both ends, the top most pellet - being pushed from the bottom only, and the bottom pellet, whose bottom push is tushioned by the wadding doo-dads.
Still can only find 410 Hornady CD and turkey loads in my neck of the woods. (Western Mass) Gonna keep an eye out for the federal 000 for sure. Need something for my Governor... (Revolver)... Cheers!
Sam, which video was it that you tested plain ol 45 fmj ball through the govnah? Coulda swore it did about 18 inched tumbling...definitely not bad. Can't seem to find it now! Thanks for these
I have shot a lot of geese. The number 2 bird shot turns into soccor ball shapes from getting squashed while still inside the barrel. The shot compresses.
I feel like this gun with the 410 has a “first shot” advantage, where if you get every pellet into the attacker it could end the fight with the first shot. You showed how even at +20 yards all pellets still hit the target, highly doubt you’ll be in a situation where you need to shoot that far, but ppl are definitely underestimating what 4 pellets of this size will do to someone’s internals vs a single 9mm or 45, let’s not forget the way higher chance of landing a shot during a firefight, I’d totally carry this or use it for any defense situation over a normal handgun.
The main weakness to the whole .410 revolver (yeah, I know, it's a .45 that shoots .410, just bear with me) has been the ammo selection. Looks like Federal did their research and came out with an excellent round. I especially like that it performs so well from the short barreled Governor and doesn't need that one version of the Judge with the barrel so long it negates its value as a handgun (IMHO). While I wouldn't normally carry a gun quite that big (unless it was a VERY cold day and I had a parka), it'd make a great home defense/car defense gun, I think.
I have noticed that oversized .45 Colt lead ammo does the best, seals the cylinder throat better and gives comparable velocity to a 4" revolver. Ultimately it is a novelty gun, but with the S&W at least it comes cut and with included .45 ACP moon clips. The .45 ACP ammo shoots slower than a normal pistol would shoot it but it's accurate enough to do some target shooting with.
@@GunSam home defense it's not a novelty. You get multiple chances per 1 trigger pull to stop a fight. 2 trigger pulls is more than an entire cylinder of a .32. And we both know the sightways in a home aren't more than that 12 yard shot you were making with ease.
@@GunSam I really appreciate the content and I definitely subscribed to the channel! Question for you... disregarding the price difference do you prefer the Governor over the Judge for build quality and dependability/reliability? Thanks!
I like the color but don't like the cold. I actually had to edit down the color in this video by dropping color saturation and temp a LOT, the entire video was glowing orange. Once the color goes away with late fall, I actually get really nice film quality, better than summer.
Sam Do you think you could try and get ahold of some 45 acp RIP rounds and test them out of the governor with your test in moon clips? It's what I've been carrying lately and I'd love to see what they do with your test gels
Regular 2 1/2 inch buckshot at 1300 (on the box) generates recoil that can only be described as "significant"....Federal saw that and dialed the propellant back..still ensuring more than adequate performance relative to more manageable recoil and accuracy...And if you do get your hands on some Number 4 shot...you may notice a jump in the recoil,,for some strange reason..and you'll have to make up your own mind about the performance..
I've been thinking of buying a Judge for a few years. But, I keep thinking my 38 or 357 would be a better defense gun and I lose interest in the Judge. But, I'm tired of thinking about it and just get one. Thinking the 410 round is interesting and different. Would be nice if it would chamber 45acp. But, I have a Pitbull for that.
Carry mine on the mower, Live in the country mow a couple acres around the house. Great for snakes that cannot tell the difference between the woods and our yard … Birdshot is my first round, even If I had to use it in self defense the birdshot would still buy time for second round of 000 Buck …
I can personally attest that a Mossberg Shockwave will put the FOG in them. I think the boy who told me to get out of my car at the intersection crapped his socks, but he still managed to nearly break the sound barrier as he ran away.
@@robertfrapples2472 I've seen a few videos where people took the trouble to SBS the shockwave on the Form-1. I don't know if the added length of a real stock would hurt it as a car defense gun. It would make it easier to shoot. As is, it's an improvement over the Mad Max double barrel.
You mentioned that you haven't tested the #4 buck loads yet. I've been curious about those. I don't have a Judge or a Governor, and I have no desire to get one. But I've wondered about how the #4 buck loads would perform out of something like my old NEF Pardner. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any to test since I started wondering that. If you happen to get any of the Federal #4 buck loads and you have the means to do so, if you could test them out of a full-size shotgun in addition to the Judge, I would appreciate it.
I've got a bunch of Number 4. The spread is horrible even at 7 yards and not very much penetration. Great for snakes and rabbit/ small game hunting. I've found myself running G2R RIP rounds in a moon clip out of my governor
@@Kaelland honestly the Hornady Triple defense shoots great out of my governor all the way up to 25 yards but I've found myself running moon clips with ,45acp RIP rounds the most just because the reloads in a real situation are better and honestly those rounds are nuts basically the same as a shotgun round damage wise. I would like to see those rounds tested out of the governor @sam
Very controlled recoil,, and the buckshot stays together like The Blue Angels out to 10-12 yards...3 in the front, 3 .45 Colt in the back..Still trying to figure out why they called it The Governor..
Agreed. From my viewing of videos of 410 defensive ammo gel tests, this is indeed the one. I don't like the inconsistency and unpredictability of most others, especially the ones that try to be clever, like slug with buckshot, or disks with bee-bees. Those seem more like marketing-driven products to me. I came across a deal on these Federals in 3-inch with 5 pellets of 000-buck for $21.37 for a box of 20 (so just about $1.07 per shell) and I bought as many as I could at the time, which, being pretty broke at that moment, was only 4 boxes, but 80 of these is probably a minimally acceptable stock for me. They seem hard to find. I'll buy more if/when I find them again, especially at that price, though I sort of doubt I'll ever see them at that price again.
@@longshot7590No one said I had an Governor (2.5"). I have a Judge Magnum (3"). You showed everyone you’re the actual bozo here. Congratulations, you played yourself.
This revolver here, the S&W Governor won't shoot 3" shells. The Taurus 3" as well as their magnum Judge version will shoot the 3", I would suggest searching for Taurus Judge or Raging Judge and Federal Handgun .410 and see what results come up.
Damn, those comment scammers are back at it again. Y'all be aware that the gift and the cake is a lie! Federal knows how to do everything with shot. Masters of the Caps & Balls. I still don't want to be responsible for each pellet.
I own the S&W Governor from 2011. It’s a very versatile revolver capable of mixing the cylinder with different caliber ammunition with the two round moon clip allowing the use of .45 ACP, .45 GAP caliber. I have used the Federal 000 Buck since I purchased the revolver. The Lehigh Defense load is made exclusively for the Governor or Judge revolver. It has excellent performance. Hornady Triple Defense is another good load I wouldn’t hesitate to use. I have tried the Hornady Critical Defense and Hornady Leverevolution in .45 Colt. I have my revolver loaded with a mix of different ammunition using 185 grain Winchester 185 grain Silvertip rounds followed by 2 Federal 000 Buckshot with the final 2 being the .45 Colt Hornady Critical Defense and Hornady Leverevolution.
This would be good "in the hallway" or across the bedroom load, but I don't really see any other application beyond that. Perhaps in a long gun that'd be a different story.
You can get a Governor revolver with a longer barrel if you want one, but i know what your saying but the idea for these type of revolvers is upclose self defensive shooting in regards to usung .410 shot shells but they can also fire .45long colt/.45acp typically, pretty good options for self defense from a revolver platform imo
