Testing out the Sterling .410 1/4 OZ slugs in the S&W Governor VS PMC Bronze .40 S&W 165 gr JHP. I do a 10% Clear Ballistics test with and without 1/4" MDF, chronograph the ammo and do 25 and 50 yard accuracy tests. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.co...

Hey Sam I have another tip you have probably heard before. That instead of those steel or aluminum rods. I use those bamboo skewers so if I hit one it just breaks where it was hit and it won't pop the eye of your chrono. Another cool test with odd but interesting results. Thanks dude for all you do

Another chronograph bites the dust! It happens to them all eventually. The PMC Bronze wasn't that bad. The damage tracks looked pretty good. Worth comparing to a 158gr LSWC in 38/357 if you ask me. The velocity was disappointing considering it was kind of on the low end weight for caliber.

I just thought about it, that I think it is possible that the broken chronograph might still "work". It has a 1/4" jack that plugs into a phone and runs on an app. Not that I wouldn't have gotten a new one as it simplifies my recording, but it's interesting to know.

You can't shoot it if it's off to the side but those are expensive. Might be worth it for a reloader though. I've seen people build battery packs the labradar so it lasts longer on the range for prs load sessions.

The 1800 fps slugs I’ve shot out of my Governor I can hit a target at 40 yards. Way beyond the usefulness of the gun, but fun to try. I got lucky and bought a ton of federal defense handgun .410 buckshot at Walmart a couple years ago for like $5 a box, Paul Harrell tested a ton of ammo in a Judge, and the handgun buckshot performed the best. I’ve been debating getting a 40 S&W because that caliber is plentiful at my local Cabelas- and I’ve never shot one. If I find a SD40VE or a Shield in 40 For a decent price, I may pick one up

your governor did exactly what my judge did at long range scenario. Now I know my limitation of distance and it it best use for close quarters (21 feet or less). So basically a home defense gun but not a cougar gun.

I've only shot .410 slugs from an ADC derringer. At 7 to 10 yards they were quite accurate, actually closer to POA than .45 Colt (which did well enough). BUT that's a different gun, different ammo, different time (so who knows the load?), etc. Some different slugs might make a difference but at today's prices and scarcity, I'd just say don't waste the money and follow your advice: buckshot or .45s.
@Predalien195
@Predalien195 2 года назад
Well slugs are still an adequate option in lieu of .45 Colts. I know I can go online and order 1/4 or 1/5 oz slugs for less than I can a box of 50 for .45 Colts right now. I wouldn't suggest trying them at longer ranges outside of their intended effectiveness, but for up close and personal they would work just fine. Plus, you don't need to be as ammo picky as you do with the buckshot loads to get good performance.

So, those Sterling Slugs are not 1/4 oz, but rather 1/5 oz. I have chronographed them as well but also weighed the slug from a shell I'd cut open. So a 1/4 oz is just shy of 110gr, a 1/5 oz is closer to 90gr. Regarding penetration, your test mirrored most of mine. There were a few slugs that I'd tested at a time that expanded real early and penetration was a bit shallow, but it wasn't consistent. I'd have a few slugs out of a box that would do that sort of thing but not every slug in the box. I would agree they perform fairly well all things considering. Main thing I notice though at range and on paper, they tend to shoot a bit low and either right or left depending on the weight of the slug and length of the shell like 3 inch vs 2 1/2. But overall, glad to see this tested for other people to see what I already knew but so they can't keep saying old wives tales about it. I doubt anybody would argue that guns like the Judge and Governor were not meant to be used at ranges like what you've shown, but its still important to show what potential it has. While I can attest that a 6 1/2 inch barrel on the Judge or a Raging Judge Magnum does better than the shorter barrel, I know most people interested in those guns want the shorter barrels. I certainly wouldn't feel undergunned with slugs in lieu of .45 Colt in a Judge/Governor revolver personally. But to each their own at the end of the day.
@rob.3575
@rob.3575 2 года назад
.410 slugs are absolute garbage out of a Governor/Judge. There is no way a .41 cal projectile is going to perform well or be accurate in a .45 cal barrel. If you want a single projectile round in your Governor/Judge, like you said use a .45 Colt.
@jw-sigp2258
@jw-sigp2258 2 года назад
The worst part is most lead 410 slugs are actually between .389 and .400 diameter. They are hollow base and soft lead. This is because manufacturers aren’t always sure what choke shotguns are going to be used for 410 slugs that they make. Exception to this is brenneke slugs which are alloyed not soft lead and have base wad on them. Either way results from a judge/governor are not going to be good. I tried a couple of Remington sluggers in my judge and it was pretty bad accuracy even at 10 yards!!!

And I would add- just buy a .45 colt revolver. Shorter, more compact gun, and includes a longer barrel, better ballistics, and always more accurate.
@Predalien195
@Predalien195 2 года назад
Except it did perform well. At the intended ranges of a Judge/Governor revolver's expected usage it did just fine. Sure, .45 Colt will be more accurate, it's a .45 bore firearm. But from 7 yards or less, it's not going to make a big enough difference to matter in terms of accuracy. And if you're using a Judge/Governor or any short barreled .45 Colt firearm at extended distances, you have bigger problems to worry about. Right now, .410 slugs are fairly available online and cheaper than buying a box of 50 rounds of .45 Colt in any type of load. Usually all that's available at the moment are lead nose cowboy loads. It's not a question of is .45 Colt a better solid projectile than a .410 slug, it's is the .410 slug adequate for self defense and the answer is yes. Compared to .410 buckshot in such a gun you don't need to be as picky about the load when running a 1/5 or 1/4 oz slug, where as the buckshot load if the powder charge isn't intended for use in a handgun causes lead shot to slam together before leaving the barrel and increasing your pattern exponentially, not to mention hurting penetration.
@Predalien195
@Predalien195 2 года назад
@@jw-sigp2258 1/5 oz slugs always pattern worse than 1/4 oz slugs I've noticed in my time with Judges and with my Raging Judge Magnum. In short barrels, yeah 10 yards, maybe 12 yards maximum is a slugs effective range. 1/5's like to go low and right or low and left, 1/4 oz tend to be more true to point of aim but if a particular brand is off, it's usually just a vertical drop by several inches. That being said, a Judge with a 3 inch barrel, a Governor with it's 2 inch barrel, or a Public Defender with a 2 inch barrel aren't intended to be shot beyond 7 yards with any load. Not that they cant shoot farther, just not what they were made for. And in that capacity in those distances, the slugs do adequate for self defense IF you don't have .45 Colts or handgun loads in .410 buckshot. I would want a .45 Colt over .410 slug if I wanted a solid round, preferably a wadcutter for such a short barrel. But, finding those on the market right now isn't easy. In fact, most .45 Colt on the market right now is 250gr lead round nose stuff and it's not that impressive either. .410 slugs however are more available online and being 1/5 or 1/4 oz isn't a big deal at those shorter ranges. And I think that's the point being displayed here. It's not a question of what's better... I think anybody who's shot guns like that knows that already. It is however a question frequently of "Will this work though?" and the answer is yes.

@troy9477
@troy9477 2 года назад
Correct. In many areas it would be classified as a destructive device, plus the sawed off shotgun issue. Here in Kalifornia, any revving shotgun is an "assault shotgun" (think the old Streetsweeper), so we can't have the Circuit Judge carbine, which might be halfway useful, as well as fun. And of course the Judge and Governor are prohibited, because they are deemed sawed off shotguns under our laws. No big matter, because I don't need one. But of course it is the principle of the matter.
@margarethouse404
@margarethouse404 2 года назад
There is a " carbine " version in 28ga , 20ga is too large for the frame size . For the Brazilian market , Judges are offered in smoothbore , which could make the concept actually worthwhile . In the US , it would be under the NFA as an AOW ( Tax Stamps , long wait , etc ) . Or If you were interested enough , you could do a Form 1 , and rebarell to a smoothbore , but see above , plus Gunsmithing costs .

@troy9477
@troy9477 2 года назад
The 410 slugs seem somewhat useful through a shotgun barrel at regular velocity. If i remember correctly the tests done by our mentor, friend and guru Paul Harrell, the 410 was useful in a shotgun, especially with buckshot. Probably quite good for an older child or a teen, or an inexperienced shooter. I have yet to see a very good 410 handgun load. The Hornady CD load with the 41 cal slug and the 2 000 buck pellets seemed to have potential. But the results i have seen from 2 or 3 different tests were disappointing. 410 in handguns seems gimmicky, and many people have jumped on the bandwagon. To me they seem to be of little value past 10-15', and only then in desperation. Any good 9mm, 40, 45 ACP (or Colt), 38+p or 357 is probably better. Testing is good though. We all learn a lot
@GunSam
@GunSam 2 года назад
Most ammo in it isn't great. The flip side is if you use nothing but .45 Colt or nothing but a quality 000 buckshot, or both, it has potential. Six rounds alternating the Federal 000 handgun which patterns only 6" at 7 yards with some hot .45 Colt would be quite awesome. The problem is it chambers ammo that should never be shot in a handgun, as long as people understand this they can do alright with them. But really you have to be a firearms enthusiast to know this, so that being said the Judge and Governor are for people who have everything else lol
@TheSingleTrucker
@TheSingleTrucker Год назад
.410 Winchester predator slugs 1/4 oz 1550 fps from my Governor turns the revolver into a serious show stopper. Pressures at 5m and less are devastating to surrounding tissue. Someone is changing their mind about needing to close the distance. Accuracy falls sharply, beyond 5-6 m.

410 is a good shotgun to start young people hunting and that is about it,ammo is outrageous even for lead birdshot and by mid teens 20 gauge or 12 or even 28 or 16 is so far superior, in a pistol it is inefficient and has zero advantages just disadvantages ,ammo even birdshot is outrageously expensive.
