I am so glad you showed taking off rust with vinegar. My grandmother refinished furniture, and it was how she cleaned the brass all the time.

Bonus points for being a city kid and knowing what fence pliers are for. I was 27 before I discovered there were special pliers for working with fence wire - right about the same time I discovered that Vice-Grips weren't actually the stock window handles on a '62 Chevy pickup... Keep keepin' on, Brother!

One of my favourite parts of watching your videos is you restoring old tools, the patina of the older tool combined with the freshly attached handles always gives such great contrast!

I really enjoy your videos, especially when you re-purpose old tools! I went to an auction a few weeks ago and bought a box of tools that the auctioneer said had been dug up from the ground. One is a huge J. H. Williams Superector ratchet handle. I took a length of 3" PVC and capped one end. I submerged the wrench handle into the pipe filled with white vinegar and let is set about a week. I then submerged the head in a bucket of the same. Amazing results from white vinegar! When I finish cleaning the ratchet pawls and oiling the whole thing down, it will be good as new. Thanks for the inspiration!

Very nice. As someone who has used many a fence tool walking miles of electrical fence, I'd never use that one if I didn't need to. You get shocked enough and you come realize how precious rubber grips are on those handles. Great work again!

Only difference between your fencing tool and the 30+ year old one in my Dad's tool box is he's got some worn in blue plasty dip coated handles. Hung a lot of barb wire and electric fencing with that tool. Great Restoration on all those tools got some real gems there!!!

I think i could exclusively watch videos in which old tools are restored... very well done.

I've found that when you're trying to submerge especially large or chunky items it's better to cover the items in plastick bags and tape the bags so that they fit the item cloesly. If you then fill the bags with vinegar you can cover the whole surface of the item with almost no vinegar.

Saving pieces from certain destruction. It's a beautiful thing. You should make a mini series doing restorations of old wood furniture.

I have a 1/4" mortising chisel just like that from my grandfather. The handle has been beaten down to maybe 2 1/2" long, long before it came to me. I use it almost every day in the shop. 99% of the time, I'm just using hand pressure, but I've been meaning to make a new brass or copper ring for it for at least the last 15 years.

I recognize a vinegar fumes cough anywhere. Even if it's sped up. Lol.

Master Of Puppets! Ooh yeah!

I just did this vinegar rust removal technique a few weeks back. Worked awesomely apart from areas that wouldn't de-rust. Ends up they had patches oil on them that I couldn't see due to the even coating of surface rust. It's worth doing a scrub with suitable detergent prior to the vinegar treatment. If you do this, the job is over in a matter of hours. Otherwise you are looking at days. The other thing i found is that the cleaned surface was ultra prone to rusting almost immediately after the vinegar soak so you want to dry and prime/paint or oil asap. Alternatively, use citric acid. It's cheaper and makes a chemical bond with the iron that doesn't seem to rust so readily.

The best and longest lasting thing I've found to loosen up fencing pliers (really all kinds of pliers) is PB Blaster, works fast and stays working for a long time. Nice job on the restorations Jimmy! -Matt

I made a similar handle out of mesquite for a wood chisel years ago on a very similar lathe. I used the taper attachment just because I'd never used one before. Nice work.

Good thing about vinegar is that you can use rusty vinegar to give old look to wood. Oak is turning black when treated. some wood gray etc.

I've always heard that if you rinse off the tools with wd40 or oil directly after removing from the vinegar bath, it will prevent the "insta-rust" that sometimes occurs on the surface. Worked for the inside of my motorcycle tank.

I have a set of fence pliers exactly like that! I spent many childhood summers with grandpa on the back side of our property repairing barbed wire fence.

I often ask myself should I bring something back to good use or just get a new one. I almost always renew and reuse. this is one of those things that let the world know where we came from and why we need to slow the heck down and enjoy something more real than the material itself. something special about restoring stuff.

Just a quick tip, if you grind the space in between the shears handle the tips will meet. Its a better option than grinding the tips down.

I have a set of fencing pliers like that. They were my grandfathers. I am 55 and they will continue to be used by generations to come. I also had a knew pair which I gave away. No where near as good as the old pair.

I would love to see you finish the rest of the tools in that box. maybe the box itself, too
