In my latest woodworking project I make giant mallet with some wood around the property. For this giant mallet, the hammer head is Locust and the handle is Ash. I needed to make the 11" tapper in the head so I made the reamer out of stainless to match the tapper on the handle, which worked well. If I had to make it again I would make a reamer with 6 or 8 fins for a smoother hole. Thank you for watching and I hope that you enjoyed this build!

While I exceptionally love the homemade Sledge-O-Matic, I think the best part is the variety of skills showcased... Lumbering, turning (both close-enough, and tooled), woodworking (the hole for the handle), blacksmithing, CNC plasma cutting, new tool fabrication, welding, sanding, and finishing. Excellent skill-set show-off Jimmy. (I mean that in the complimentary way). Mixing multiple disciplines/skills is where the DIY gets separated from the makers. It's the goal every budding maker should aspire to.

Nice mallet! My dad built a giant mallet years ago with 8" pipe, super thick stuff, with 1/2" plate welded on the ends. It was a beast too. We used it to drive fence posts on the property for pasturing horses. Made quick work of it, and didn't beat the ends of the posts to pieces like an ordinary sledge would. My uncle (6ft, 200lb+ guy) borrowed it a few years later to drive some of those super (stupid) spikes for a fence we were building in town, and I watched him smash his shin with it. It was one of the most horrid things I've ever witnessed.

Nearly 5 years ago I got the amazing opportunity to meet Jimmy at his Manhattan shop when I was visiting New York for a film festival. After a tour, he showed me his most recent project, the brass ring mallet for Core77. I specifically remember holding it and thinking "Wow... this is one hell of a mallet..." 5 year's later I'm watching this like "Okay... Now THAT's one hell of a mallet!" Great video Jimmy, you outdo yourself with every project!

First thing I thought of when I saw the poster frame. No Need IMHO 'Diresta's' on the head. He could have easily reached 5 rows with that one, if he could pick it up. ;-P Saw him 4-5 times live but never bought tickets for those rows. A great, funny Man!

Wes Mischke If he added a 18inch semicircular plywood board to the tool rests base that could be stood on while in use it would still be easily moveable by stepping off but stabilised by his weight when its being used.

After a lifetime of being on construction sites and having ppe drilled into my brain, I still have the opinion that if it's your personal shop, I or no one else has any business telling someone what safety gear or safety measures to use. Some people just need to shut their mouth and watch and enjoy. But, just my opinion.....

@@KJ-kw7gh in all normal circumstances, I'd agree. And even in principle I agree. What makes me think twice is the video and RU-vid. Regardless of the "don't do this at home kiddies" warnings, people, and especially kids take these videos, especially one from popular makers/channels, as "the right way". I believe, as a nod to social etiquette, makers have a responsibility to at least make good efforts to showcase proper PPE usage. It's just good maker citizenship. That said, I make enough to know Jimmy is WAY beyond my skills, and if he says "don't so this it home", before I even attempt it, I'm gonna spend a LOT of time researching and investigating the proper and safe way to do something.

This reminds me of those "test your strength" mallets at the travelling carnival (or Coney Island) 😁 I liked that bandsaw trick where you hot glued some temporary pieces to "square" an round object as you pass it through the badnsaw. Loved the fruit smashing antics! Great work! This giant mallet needs it's own channel 😉
