【前期剧评】Ancient Love Poetry - First Impression...um...well... [CC] 

I think a lot of xianxia drama fans, mostly watch it because they want the stereotypical plot lines. Anything new is just a cherry on top, but people just want to see these star crossed love stories, all these lifetime and reincarnations and pining for love. And I think most importantly, people want to see the male leads spit up blood and get jealous! Lol! At least that’s the gist I’ve gotten over the past few years.

I love this drama, The storyline is fast but smooth. The story is interesting and some scenes had mesmerized me. The cinematography is superb. I love all the characters. The acting of all actors are also super, they fit for each of the character. Xu Kai is very handsome and charming in Xianxia costume. I love every aspect of this c-drama. I have watched so many c-drama and many of them are too draggy. I often skip some scenes. But watching this, I never skip any part of the drama. I watched every second attentively. The story is really interesting and captivating.

I'm on episode 15. Absolutely loving it. I never get tired these shows. I love the scenery.

Nah when Shanggu slapped the empress back in front of everyone for slapping her son I don’t think I’ve seen that in another drama 😭 that was so satisfying She did not even asked what the son did, just asked him who hurt you, he points at the empress and the next second a slap flew her way 😂😂😭😭😭

Your review doesn't do any justice to this drama. it topped Journey of the flower and Ashes of love. It was better than both of them. Idk about y'all,but I loved it. I finished it 4 days lol. And I'm sure many will enjoy this drama. The fl was strong, dignified and extremely courageous. We don't see that kinda stuff in c dramas that much

bai ju is supposed to be cold and stone faced according to the book... so xu kai's acting is spot on....

I think it’s unfair review. My opinion it’s best 2021 cdramas. I have enjoyed watching it, you said it’s too boring. Because of Similar to other dramas! in this era its very hard not find similarities between dramas. I have found some unique in this drama. I liked the female lead she doesn’t ’ exaggerating her acting it’s normal. the character she is weak and strong which she did it good job. What i have found this drama is doesn’t have a many plot twisting you don’t bother guessing next scene it’s like a story telling, if you flow the story line definitely you will enjoy watching. You compared some other dramas if pay attention its way different than dramas so far in first half. If you mean the demons and tribulations etc that is a fantasy world not the story.

Nothing wrong with a standard xianxia. Some of us are not tired of it.

I don't watch many c dramas as they don't attract me much. But this one was one of the best to me. The actor, actress playing different roles than usual shows that how good as an artist they are. Don't know about the novel, but I loved the way both of the leads have portrayed their characters. U can see the character development & change in acting & their styles based on story progression. The musics r so good. Some points seemed so natural to me- like waking up from sleep after a dream. These small things really made the drama beautiful.

I just finished and surprisingly, I enjoyed it. Highly recommend! I actually dropped it but picked it back up when I ran out of things to watch and so glad I gave it a chance. If you loved Love and Redemption, you can't miss this one!

Of all the on going dramas currently I prefer Ancient love poetry even better than Falling into your smile. I love the story line and I don't have any problems with the cast I love them all.My personal perspective 😁🥰😍

Not sure if its just me but before I watch I also didn't really like the female lead, but watching her in the drama I fell for her smile. If nothing else I think when she smiles it captures my heart. Gives me that feeling of I need to protect that smile. lol weird feeling really i think its a first for me while watching a drama

For me "ALP" is one of the best cdramas. I just love it. Can't stop myself from rewatching all the episodes again and again.. And kudos to all the actors especially Xukai & Zhao Dongyu❤

Well this is one of my most favorite drama of this year. Xu Kai is really perfect for cold character role i swearr,❤️❤️❤️. Get hooked from episiode 1.

I used to really be swayed by her Review of a drama on whether I would pick it up or not, and most of the time her recomendations are good. But since she recommended Unforgettable Love I have to rethink that, since that drama is so mindnumbingly stupid, cliche and contrived that I wonder whether Ancient Love Poetry isn't so bad after all. After all it has Xu Kai in it and I usually love his performances. On a different note, I think it is kind of unfair of chinese viewers to critizise the stiff acting of the ML and the unconvincingly childish acting of the FL when all the roles for chinese actors are basicallys the same. Cold emotionless ML and dumb, sunny golddigging FL. I mean how can they expect to see range in acting if the characters are basicallys one note and any realistic movement of facial muscle makes the actor run the risk of being called ugly and unperfect by viewers. I mean please have some realistic expectations of the actors and actresses. And start writing nuanced and varied characters. Though I don't think Dramas weren't so repetitive if viewers didnt want to see the same shit over and over again.

I find that some of your reviews are biased. I really like your insights regarding the literary aspect and elements of some dramas like the one you did of Joy of Life and Word of Honor. However, it is evident that you dislike fantasy stories overall. When you give me a poor review on a fantasy drama, I watch it because I know I'm going to like it. I avoid realistic dramas a lot...I need to escape reality when I watch a drama. Why would I desire to watch something that is similar to my boring real world?

If you think about Greek Mythology, those gods are just like humans, but more powerful. After all, these stories are made up by humans, unlikely to stand above human experiences.

Mahn people should leave the drama n their personal views separate ..I'll give it a 10/10...plus it has Zhou Dongyu....music is definitely high class n CGI is way cooler then anything I've seen b4..

I'm new to the Chinese drama world especially the Xianxia genre, and that is the reason why I don't mind the tropey scenes so much. The plot is like a paraphrased version of different xianxia dramas, (Ten Miles and Pillow Book) that again, I don't mind. I watched Ancient Love Poetry not for the cast or the plot but for the CGI. There are tons of xianxia or even wuxia dramas out there that I don't want to watch because of the production set ( Miss the Dragon). Although I'm new, I can say that there are dramas with less than desirable CGI, that's why I'm so fascinated with ALP because it is an eye candy. Wish they could've added more color and diversity to their wardrobe though and for goodness sake, bring out all the fancy and elaborate jewelry, they're gods, they must be filthy rich.

I usually agree with AvenueX opinions but I actually really enjoyed this drama. I totally agree that xianxia has become so weird in comparison to what the ancient chinese saw it. furthermore, the costumes and styling are far too standard and it is getting rather annoying as we're seeing nothing new. however, I really liked this drama, it was definitely tropey but it was still somehow enjoyable? I really appreciated how shanggu sometimes received a slap in the face for her flaws, for example when she tried to wake bai jue up to gloat that he was staying late in bed but when in reality unblocking her meridians had taken a huge toll on his body. and also that time when she looses against the snow goddess in a petty duel over a kite, it really makes her a much more relatable character as gods in this context can be just as likely to loose and fail as mortals are. another thing that I really liked was houchi's struggle of having a consciousness but not a body of her own which is a discussion that I haven't seen yet in xianxia. the drama does try to push forwards that houchi and shanggu are two different consciousnesses but there was less of a dramatic distinction between houchi and shanggu in terms of acting which really took parts of a really good theme away. but maybe the stylists could have helped a little and emphasised it more with a different cut of dress or a different colour scheme? I mean omg just look at this (somewhat) wasted potential! there is also another very good point later on in the drama that I will not mention because it's a bit of a spoiler, but Bai jue and shanggu's relationship after her reawakening was dealt with very well. it was indeed quite tropey but I think overall the balance was maintained by Shanggu's personality and realism.

Before write a review about drama watch, should watch to end to give a fair judgement. I rarely comment on any clip but the word “boring” is no where near the rating of this drama, it drama is really underrated

Someone describes the drama’s style as “frigid”: there’s no vibrant colours, elaborate hairdos, embroidered clothings, strong chemistry between any two players, high stake events, or interesting MacGuffin. Everything is just so bland and meh. Oh, Xu Kai is in “Falling into your smile” that gets absolutely butchered on Chinese social media now. The drama is based on a novel that plagiarised the real life stories of Chinese professional video gamers. All the characters in the novel/drama correspond to real people (without their consent, of course). The novel is notorious among Chinese gamers, and the author is quite brazen and never admits any wrongdoing. The depiction of the video game profession is also very laughable.

This drama has become one of my favorite. Loved the topic, enjoyed the casting, the visuals & the music. Will definitely share with others.

I just watched episode 15 and 16 and I am quite surprised that the story does seem to get better from here and the main leads acting seem to have improved a lot in ep16.

For me this was a masterpiece . The acting was so on point, the dresses , characters, songs ,visual effects all were perfect. This is the best drama aired in years. I would rate it second to eternal love.

Xu kai is everything that I watch in that drama. Gonna watch till the end. My opinion matters

People have been creating gods in the image of humans and our world since antiquity. A perfect example of this is Ancient Greece. Their stories of the rivalry of gods behaving in very human ways and meddling in human affairs inspired one of the greatest epics in history, The Illiad. It has inspired artists not only in antiquity, but also from the Renaissance to the 19th century. Humans have always created their gods in their own image. The kind of “other” conception of immortal beings with impressive powers living in a world not patterned on our own is really the purview of science fiction and fantasy. Rattan had a bit of this, but because the alien beings were by that time part and parcel of the human world and the ecology of the planet, they were forced to interact with it and make their way in the human world. Maybe the success of Rattan will open up productions of more daring science fiction stories. The caveat, as always with Chinese entertainment is whether, or to what extent the censors will allow such stories to be told in the way they should be told.

First part was a boring story of the past. Second part is where the thrill begins. Not the best compared to past fantasy dramas but compared to on-going ones, ALP is the only decent drama to watch. IMHO.

I don't care about the hate comments. I love a leading lady that does not behave like a 12 years old and I like the pace. Awesome CGI, OSTs and plot for me, can't wait for the next episode. And, yes, I love Xianxia genre, I don't mind seeying all the tropes again, because, yes, I like all of it. If it does not have reincarnation, sacrifices, jealous bitches...it is not Xianxia

I like drama so far but I'm still here to watch avenuex's rant vid as it's always so funny!😂😂 ALP pick up the peace for me after ep 14. ZDY's potrayal of FL is endearing & charming to me, esp her smile(so cute❤).

I’m on ep. 20 and I am still enjoying ALP. I don’t think there was a miscast, as I compared them to the drawings I saw I online. The actors and actress did a pretty good job. What I think is wrong is the storytelling. The series of events are happening in a linear fashion. If I was to re-edit the story, I will start with the story of Qingmu and Houchi. And create a storyline where they both come to learn about their past, redemption and move forward. I think starting the story at the beginning took away an important aspect of character development. I also think the characters fall in love to fast, their are no motivations into how they fall in love, just leaving it up to fate just was not convincing enough. But I will continue tread on as I absolutely love Xu Kai.

There is a novel whose eng name is “Ascending, Do not disturb” it’s a xianxia slice of life and it could make a good 26-32 ep drama if they make adjustments..... and there r some internet published novels on Qidian and RoyalRoad too of xianxia genre that can be really good if adapted into cdrama setting... some alterations must be made tho.....

I actually disagree with you on this one. Yes, the costumes aren’t as interesting and vibrant, but I think it’s a welcome change from the tacky and overly colourful costumes we’ve been seeing from the rise of Low budget dramas recently. The story can be confusing and a little boring at the beginning, but I find myself enjoying every bit of it later on. Nobody is truly dumb in the drama, everyone plays their character as they are portrayed in the book, the transition from the backstory to the main story could have been better presented but I do think that overall the show has sustained my attention with its amazing CGI and the romance keeps getting better! I am really enjoying it. I also think the backlash from mainland Chinese netizens have been overly harsh and frankly, quite superficial. Criticism about how both actors are ugly or fat faced are completely unwarranted and disrespectful. Love Xu Kai and his portrayal of Bai Jue and the other characters he plays in the drama. I think he really fits the Xian Xia look well. Pleasantly surprised by Zhou Dong Yu as well. She acts well and has an adorable face. Don’t understand why people think she is ugly. Anyway please keep watching and give it a chance! I think you might come to enjoy it more in the later episodes.

The youtuber Asian Drama News reported that people were unfairly giving it bad reviews on Douban (i hope i spelled that right) so much so that it even bleed over to the international audience doing it on My Drama List. In the reviews people were calling Xukai fat and the female lead ugly. Asian Drama News never said why they were flooding it with bad reviews but now i know it's the book readers. Book readers get on my damn nerves. They always do stuff like this. They don't like the way an adaptation turns out so they get upset and do stupid things like attacking the actors in the drama or giving it bad reviews after only watching the first episode so the ratings will drop. One would think these people would know by now that an adaptation is NEVER gonna be perfect and the source material is ALWAYS gonna be better. The adaptation doesn't ruin the source material at all. If you don't like it you can always re-read the damn book. Attacking someone's appearance is dirty, these people should be ashamed of themselves. I'm not addressing the people who genuinely wasn't feeling the drama. If you don't like it then you don't like it.

I think what really sets this drama apart from other xian xia (花千骨, 三生三世 etc) is the strong female lead! I really enjoy how she was the one to kabedon the male love interest and say she’d take him as her bride while discussing what bridal gifts to give him lol. The reason why I enjoyed reading the peach blossom novel is since the lead was similarly strong but then the drama version cast yang mi… who is as girly as all the other xian xia drama female leads and so the character lost her charm. I think the relationship dynamic in Ancient Love Poetry is pretty rare and interesting.

I remember watching the Empress of China some years back and I was amazed by the hair styling in that drama. I know is not a wuxia/xiaxia drama but they had so much imagination with the hair, colors and accessories for that drama. That's the kind of aesthetics I would like to see again. When I think of Gods and heaven's from Chinese culture I think they should be depicted as more flamboyant than average mortals.

It was boring for me too, and I was gonna drop it but then somehow watched 14 episodes... and now I am gonna continue. Those who read novel say that the story actually begins in episode 16.

People can talk bad about this drama all they want but IMO this is much better than love and redemption.

I'm liking it, the only xanxia i seen so far are ten mile of peach blossom and ashes of love, and i think it took a few eps for me to get into them. I didn't see anything wrong with the logic though, shangu was being taught by those gods close to her and they could not help her due to spoiling her, so they ask for an outsider to help her develop her power. From my understanding, the real story won't start until later episodes, this is just an introduction to ml and fl and to establish their relationship. For the casting from novel fl was describes as a young girl, so zdy fit her image well, those who complain are nitpicking cause they don't like zdy look.

I love Xu Kai with all my heart but I had to stop this drama at the third episode. You're right, it's utterly boring. And the insta-love doesn't make this any better. Also, the similarities with Ten Miles and Journey of Flower (which I have problems with) just made my experience even worse. I don't understand the people telling us to wait till episode 17 for it to get interesting. That's ridiculous. Who has the time for that?

Tbh, I’ve been watching C-Drama for three years now, and normally if I find a drama not too entertaining or just not hooked me in I tend to give up mainly I would of given up after 2 episodes. But for some reason I pushed through to 4 from 4 to 11 where is actually picking up and I’m beginning to enjoy it. Yes it’s nothing like 10 Miles of Peach Blossom or Love and Destiny but it’s has it’s own style and it’s own uniqueness. I’m not saying AvenueX is entirely wrong but I do think she needs to push through just abit more and she may just enjoy it as much as I am if not maybe more. This genre is one of my favourite in C- drama so maybe I’m more inclined to push through.

I don't know what she is talking about. Basically, the teacher made her complete a book report of a book that she did not want to read or had any interest in. You get out of it what you put into it. I was only able to get the first three full episodes and I am loving it. With all dramas you have to give them at least 5 episodes to deem it unworthy. I am totally turned off by how this reviewer reviews the characters and the actors appearance. Is she a producer? Why is she talking like this? She isn't apart of the film is she? Was she cut from production? Why so salty?

This drama honestly tops the list for me. I liked the Wolf as well. And for those saying the female lead didn’t suit the role did you truly watch the drama? I don’t think anyone could have exuded such class, power and kindness at the same time. Xu Kai did an AMAZING job with his character as well. The fact that Boxuan Bai Jue and Qingmu feel like different people just shows how much of a great actor he is. Generally I feel all the actors really understood the assignment. All the gods and even her friend Yuemi

When the opening came up i was like " OH MY GAHH ZHOU SHEN!! " , And then the ending ost i was like " IS THIS MAO BUYI???!! " , AND THEN I JUST HEARD LIU YUNING IS SINGING OST IN THIS DRAMA , i got very excited sksksk 😂 this drama is 好歌! , Still on episode 1 , but already loving this drama 🥰

Apparently this drama has gotten a lot of unwarranted hate - at Ep4 I’m really enjoying it. Is it because I love the similar dramas you listed? Partly yes because the cinematography and special effects are outstanding, but I also love ZhouDongyu and Xu Kai together - if you enjoy this genre I highly recommend Ancient Love Poetry - you will enjoy it. Dongyu captures her role perfectly precisely because of her different approach - I completely disagree w your assessment of Xu Kai’s performance. Lastly the costumes are also Perfect because their simplicity is like a frame for each character who you can focus on instead of being distracted - the set provides the grandeur and awe. So I had to come back and respond to your review which I respect but completely disagree with.

I'm on ep 11 & I'm currently loving/binging it. Though it's your typical plot, it has been very well done and carried by the actors. Love the characters and actors, clothes are beautiful, setting is BEAUTIFUL, and I absolutely love the love story between the main characters.

Now that I’m done with it, I actually really enjoyed the show! I think it could be the top xianxia drama of this year assuming there isn’t another popular one coming out later this year.

I think if I was an immortal, I'd be quite invested in human stuff, partly out of boredom, with having so much time to kill, but also imagine if you could tweak a cdrama while you were watching it if things weren't going the way you wanted..... that would be me. Be glad I'm not a God, people 🤣

For me people judged these drama too early they think it's about god fall in love and naive and bratty girl when the plot keep developing towards more exciting tropes than other typical xianxia drama I've seen, they actually have one solid plot line that they hold on to from episode 1 and now episode 22. I love how this show started with showing all the gods with highest power and came in the apprentice and then when catastrophe happened those apprentice were the highest and the gods were the lower than them with interesting twist how remnants of their power is scattered around the lower realm. It keeps getting exciting to see people who were introduced earlier in the drama is now gone but we can starting to see their presence. More intricate plots than what Ashes of Love and Love and redemption imo.

I have been watching clips of Ancient Love Poetry and it seems to be a good drama to me.

I totally agree with Avenue X first impression review of being boring. I even stopped watching at episode 6 at first time. But well, I'm a sucker for Xianxia genre and thirsty for another xianxia after LAR so i picked it up again. Turned out the story gets better later and it became my xianxia of 2021! It may be the same plot involving three lives time but i like its unique story line of revealing villains! I saw many people dropping at first few episodes but trust me, the story gets better. And about zhou dongyu, AvenueX's saying of her being not cut out for her xianxia genre. But i love how she portrayed at the peak scene when she's suffering the most! Well over all, even though it might not be as good as Three miles of peach blossom, it's the one for xianxia of 2021!

I think when watching a drama the most important is about the story. This drama is a lot more complicated then normal xian xian. this is not just like the other but it explain also about the different of god and immortal and also each realm in further eps. I would recommend that to judge the drama only after watch half of the total eps. Cause the beginning eps is just trying to put the foundation of the story.

We need more originality in Chinese dramas. The day of becoming you is the first drama that I've felt is so refreshing in ages, it's easy to overlook the body-swapping trope because every other element is so good.

Haha, I got the "boring" part. In truth, they did not make it very appealing in the beginning; the costumes were plain bland, the main leads were hard to root for (esp when their chemistry didn't make any sense) and it didn't make any sense either why everyone treated wild and bratty ShangGu so well. Knowing what's to come, you'd think they would make her work harder, instead they spoiled her silly. BUT the drama redeemed itself very well in the concluding arc of the first realm, combined with the best plot devices from multiple xianxia dramas, and a satisfying understanding of how immortal, mortal and devil realm came to be. One thing that kept me watching was how ShangGu is all powerful mostly on her own. In Glass Heart drama, the female lead was badass, but she had another identity as male. In Eternal Love (3L3W), the female lead was weak and barely exhibited any display of power. Ancient Love Poetry is the first drama where it's actually portraying a headstrong, powerful and leading woman character. That deserves a lot more credit. Not to mention the subsequent episodes from 15 onward kept me glued to my seat. I am now completely on the ALP ship.

There are probably background gods making bets on "how long do these star-crossed lovers get together" and the answer "three lifetimes" is banned and they have to be hella specific

As someone who just recently got into the C drama land this year, I haven't watch that much of dramas to the point that I'm getting bored or used to the same plot/storyline. So, everything that I saw in this drama is totally new for me. And for a beginner like me, I'd say this drama kinda hooked me up and get me looking forward to new episodes every week. I never read the novel so I don't have any expectations to look up to. So far I'm enjoying all the episodes and plus with all the good ost, it's a bonus! Tbh before I watch this drama, nothing attracts my attention as I was waiting for my BL drama to air (Immortality or Winner is King). As I still can't move on from TU & WOH, I don't really have the interest to watch any non- BL dramas. But APL really changed my mind. Like the 1st episode that I watched casually at 2am last week has brought me here till ep 16 today. I know everyone have their own opinions & preferences. Imo, you guys should give this one a try if you're new with xianxia drama like me. I think the casts are great & fits their roles respectively. I'm already looking forward for next episodes tomorrow. 🥰🥰

Can't blame anyone who doesn't give this drama more chance, I've watched two episodes and I can tell it will be better in future episodes but I really don't have the patience to carry on. The CGI is remarkable tho, it is by far the best in cdrama.

I really lose my patience when I watch the same typical scenes everywhere... Like, I can't even see a hint of sincerity in scriptwriting at some parts, and it is so clear that they are just groping around for some scenes or incidents or plot points in other dramas and just go like, "Okay! Let's compile!".... Mah gosh! I hate when that happens...

It's especially a stress relief from my summer term finals week 💟 Btw for casting, people are very rarely happy the only casting in my recent memory that the book fans loved right away is probably immortality ( which still hasn't premiered😭😭😭😭) but usually if the actors do a good job by the end they learn to live with it.

Thank you for your insights. 😊 I really got tired of the unnecessary sacrifices and drawn out misunderstandings in this kind of dramas. There's nothing else that could make this drama endearing to me. I have never read the novel, and even the actors couldn't make it enjoyable. Hence, it got boring and frustrating to watch. Also, it's such an insult for a significant partner to bear everything in secret and decide for you just because he/she thinks you can't handle it. If it's going to involve the life of another person, have the decency to give them the choice whether they want it or not.

I always laugh when I looked at xukai tried to not laught in everything scene like.. Bruh i know you can't 😂 and yes the plot itself too boring and too familiar 😂 but I still have to watch cause they have xukai on it , that's all :v

I really really liked this drama a lot. I just finished watching whole episode and I wish it never end . I really appreciate all the actors and actress in this drama . They did a such wonderful job . I cried a lot and my eyes are swelling like this 👀 .. I don't mind it too much it's tolerable in comparison to The Flame's Daughter lol. I cannot stomach that one and Ashes of Love was blah to me. I don't care about CGI too much I just want to see a good plot and decent acting. We can cut props and some production costs as long as the acting is watchable. I don't think they match couple wise but oh well at least it's not someone who has a super pretty face but completely sucks at acting. I'll just put my face on her and say it's me in there just kidding! ROFL. The logic don't make sense but eh fine I'll see if it gets any better later.

I want the book "Seven Unfortunate Lifetimes, All Thanks to a Single Moment of Impulse" made into a Xian Xia drama because the romance and story arcs are fresh and wacky. Characters are also multifaceted yet it is a short story

(Spoiler warning!!!!) Just finished watching it and wanted to wait till today to watch your review... XD It's an okay drama, but as you say... boring. It's entertaining, yes, but thinking back I really skipped a lot especially from ep. 30 to the end. They kept talking about the same things over and over again... showing the evil queen plotting things, the good guys struggling with whatever... The end was... weird? It's good, but... the whole huuuge power of chaos tribulation seemed like a sidenote. Like, yeah, so that happened... The whole show was working towards that moment and then it just happened within a minute and was over. Nobody really noticed it... That was strange.

you're soo on point I watched 17 episodes and couldn't take it anymore it's soo boring and the writing is not that great I kept watching just for Xu Kai.

I really like this drama, this drama is the best for me out of all the dramas I've watched in the Xian Xia genre. I can't move on from this drama... really.
