When you respond "No, I didn't" which one do you use? たべませんでした OR たべてません? Native speakers use both depending on the situation and context. I'll explain the differences and tendencies between the two.

Good video. I learned Japanese in Japan on the fly through native speakers. The funny thing is that I use both of these interchangeably but until now I had no idea why. Yet I would never do it when speaking about things in the distant past. The Japanese part of my brain would just pick one and I always felt "this one is wrong" regardless of which I picked. I asked my wife about which one to use and she has no explanation. This was actually pretty helpful as an explanation. I like how you focus on how people actually speak versus textbooks. I've found that EXTREMELY rare in Japanese studies. It's also good for people like me who learned Japanese in Japan in a professional / personal setting. BTW: My wife's name is Yuko.

Wow! That was fabulous! One can never learn something like that from a textbook. I will def remember this lesson when i go to japan (someday after corona) and hear it being used around me. I'll probably forget and talk like a textbook, but at least I'll understand what's going on when I hear it. Thank you! :D

Yuko sensei, Could you please let me know the equivalent of the current levels N1, N2, N3, N4 and N5 to previous levels Kyu 1, Kyu 2, Kyu 3 and Kyu 4. I studied the books Japanese for Busy People (I, II and III) published by Association for Japanese-Language Teaching and passed Kyu 3. Now syllabus seems to have changed but my interest in Japanese language has not waned.

She's talking about the "-te" form of the verb, which is used to connect to another verb, not the noun "te" for "hand/palm".

「～てません」is used for recent past, such as earlier today, yesterday, last week, last month, etc. This is not used for Non-volitional verbs, such as ある・いる・みえる・わかる. 例文1 비교적 최근에 일어난 일에 대해 말하는 경우 15:31 A：「ジョーカー」っていう映画見ましたか？조커란 영화 보셨어요? B：いえ、見てませんけど…。아뇨, 안봤는데요. A：ぜひ見てください！すごくいいですよ。꼭 보세요! 엄청 재밌어요. 例文2 화자 2명이 문맥을 공유하지 않는 경우 18:08 A : 「この夏沖縄に行きましたか？」이번 여름에 오키나와에 갔었어요? → B : 「いえ、行きませんでした。」아뇨, 안갔어요.
