@@acmelkaOne of possible uses. Mostly for show IMO. Was worn by wealthy samurai and drawn with use of retainers before the battle. As wealthy samurai mostly fought on horseback, probably was like a horseback spear - a long-range meelee weapon to strike your opponent while being out of their range. All IMO, of course.
Каждый раз, как это видео попадает в рекомендации, я, как в первый раз, восхищаюсь этой девушкой, что в одно движение достаёт из ножен такой длинный инструмент по разделке гигантского тунца.
Every time I see this video recommended on my feed I can’t help but watch. Each viewing I’m astonished by how well and with great ease that she draws her odachi. Her smile at the end always makes me chuckle a bit.
She handled it alright her start was fine her return/ sheave was awful and considering women’s shoulders are naturally more flexible. That was bad ! And yes, before you ask, I am speaking from experience, my son control that type of die katana Better then that an if I can teach my son to do it ijs nice video but she needs to practice, returning the sword to the scabbard is all I’m saying I am Senpai Steve of the Mighty Fairview Dojo Noble house of Nisei Goju Ryu Karate Do Jitsu . @@hhhhhhhfjjrjrjrjrirh148 Im pretty sure that it was/is a ceremonial Odachi (Idk if it’s still used) that was used as a sword of the gods of the Shinto region
I love how you can see she has visible (extremely slight) difficulty trying to sheathe the Odachi, it's very subtle but she did a wonderful job nontheless and tells you just how LONG that Odachi is.
Actually, Japanese use an Odachi back in Samurai era as a frontliner, to cut down cavalry's horses in a single swing. They typically carried it on their shoulder because of the weight, without its scabbard (saya).
@@yusufbaskoro5580I'm pretty sure that a bigger sword was used for that purpose I forgot the name of it but supposedly that sword in particular was so big that it took two burly men to carry it this is light enough for one person to use the one that I remember was a larger sword than this
It's not your normal katana and I don't remember the name for this type of sword but I do remember it wasn't designed for normal sword fighting use. Anyway it's still a interesting sword to look at.
@@BleachCowboy2016 oh no. There's definitely some very weird shit I'm getting hit with that does not work for me. This one though, you're right it definitely works.
Well, Odachi/Nodachi did exist in history, like this sword. And some of them were made so long that noone could reasonably wield them (one of them had a 13+ foot blade)
Most giant swords required a servant (the equivalent of a European squire) to hold onto the sheath while the warrior walked forward to draw the sword. And outside of combat, you can even have the boy carry the blade for you, save your own energy for the duel.

It's not "hilariously long" it was the main samurai weapon back then which they used on horseback, the katana everyone thinks is their main weapons is actually their secondary. It's a perfectly normal sized sword for horseback combat.
