My late wife was Korean. I have been to Korea 51 times, from the 1950s to the 1970s. She passed in 1974. It was a surprise at first but you get in a taxi and he asks your age. When you don't know someone and you don't want an awkward silenced, in the West we talk about the weather. In Korea they talk about age. Not that unusual. It was always funny with my wife and me. When we met, I told her my age as the Koreans count it. She told me her age as Americans count it. For a while, we both thought I was older. She was my elder by a year.

Honestly, I don't blame Koreans for being a little surprised every time they hear a foreigner speak their language. Korean isn't commonly spoken around the world. In a reverse situation, from my own experience as a Vietnamese, the first thing some Americans told me after learning that I'd just recently moved to America was, "Wow your English is very good!" They were surprised because English isn't still commonly spoken in Vietnam. Even though there's already a huge Vietnamese-American community in USA, I still don't find that kind of reaction bothersome at all. I'm also guilty of it myself whenever I encounter a foreigner who can speak Vietnamese fluently, which is factually a rare phenomenon.

Reason koreans ask your age is because in korean language we have a separate polite-words and sentence structures for the older ones. We put some particular postposition at the end of the word and there are even different same meaning words only for the polite-usage.
@gentlejoy9170
@gentlejoy9170 3 года назад
That's just the thing that I don't understand. I am Korean too. Why do you need to use the sentence structures which you'd use at younger people, while you don't even know them? Why can't we use the polite form of sentences to everyone we do not know well, regardless of their age? So what I mean; please do not ask the age when you meet people, just use the polite form to everyone. That will be really fine.

Yes! I live in Ukraine and I can't imagine grabbing someone or even touching someone on the street, entering a stranger's space like that? Even looking at them for longer that thrre seconds. Patting someone on the shoulder is the maximum amount of physical contact I can bare with. I don't get how people can act otherwise. Here, people will even restrain themselves from speaking to strangers without a valid reason, like no one will talk to you just because they feel like it, and sometimes people will even remain silent and look the opposite way when someone does something inappropriate. The general thought is that everyone minds their own business, so no one bothers eachother. I don't think the Russian woman said anything weird at all, if so correct me please

We were under the English authority and keeping French as our first tongue took so many fights that it has become a part of us to defend it. If you found ppl being mistreated bc they can’t speak French well I’d say it may have been bc they insulted our language. As a foreigner in Korea for 5 years I always get comments such as "you should lighten your skin" or " your pretty, but you would be better with white skin" and such. It got to me at first, and made me feel uncomfortable to be "me" but now I just learned to cope with it, which is very sad. I just hope the "appearance is everything" thing will dial down and Koreans would learn to love themselves for who they are and not what media tells them is "pretty" or "handsome".

A. Since TV was invented, most of the Asian women have been influenced by western movies and cultures in which a lot of white men or women are playing the handsome character whereas, other races such as Asians or Black people play the funny character. Therefore, the perception that whiter or lighter skin makes them better looking has manifested itself in their minds which is ridiculous in my opinion. However, that's what has been happening. Hence, certain stereotypes are associated with skin color. B. Korean people are closed-minded due to the geographical difficulties to access other countries such as the US or Canada where so many people of different skin color are living together. In other words, they simply haven't had enough chances to get used to foreigners. In addition, they are not able to speak English fluently which makes them hesitate to have international experiences because they care a lot about what other people think and always want to be perfectionists. This trend has changed in the young generation and many people have already interacted with people from all over the world. However, in my opinion, to change their perception of the standard of beauty takes years. Therefore, I regret that you might have been heard ridiculous comments from Koreans and I think you should ignore that because they are not fully aware of what they are saying due to the reasons that I mentioned above. Don't cope with that, it's not simply worth it. They were not able to widen their horizon, and maybe you can try to understand their point of view.
@sweetchocolatecake296
@sweetchocolatecake296 7 лет назад
유성호 actually I thought it was more Koreans find that the darker skinned the more you worked where as the lighter skinned the less you worked. It's very different in western society though. We find the darker you are the more "exotic" and richer because you can afford to go on holiday, while the paler the poorer because you can't afford to go anywhere. Both sides are wrong, we should all just accept everyone.

There'll always be some kind of racism or discrimination. Both sides have people visiting the other country and meeting the wrong people. What I mean by that is: Of course there are kind Black people in America and kind Koreans in Korea but again, those foreigners meet the wrong people and then judge them and generalize. I'm Korean-American, and I extremely don't like how Koreans discriminate by color. However, I've also experienced being generalized by all sorts of races in America. The typical, "do you eat dogs?" (Fuck no) or "Asians are horrible drivers" (They have never been in a vehicle with me / I never got a ticket and I want to keep it that way like any other sane person). Honestly, I'm just thankful I didn't hear these when I were younger, otherwise I would have been really insecure about myself. I also get complaints from my non-Korean friend about how a Korean did this or that to them or what they saw some Korean do. How am I supposed to know why they did something? They are strangers yet they connect them to me because I happen to be Korean.

Hello, I'm a Korean-American expat growing up in West Africa, so I know what it's like to be the outsider, the foreigner, the black sheep. Thus, I’m not speaking from a place of ignorance in this comment. I appreciate these folks sharing their honest opinions and experiences, which are essential to progress. But I do have some problems with what they said. I sincerely understand their frustration and grievances. But complaining about people being too nice seemed like a bit much to me. About the language exchange thing. Yeah, I reckon that must be annoying. But y'all gotta know that Korea has only recently started getting foreigners. Right up until now, Korea was always extremely, extremely isolated: It didn't interact with the West until the late 1800s (and even then, contact was minimal). We had trade going on with China and sometimes Japan, but that was about it. No one cared about us and no one wanted to visit us … These things take time. I found this complaint outrageous: "how old are you?" I was surprised that the interviewees did not seem to know how essential age is to us. Korean culture is based on confucianism, in which respect must be given to our elders. In order to establish a relationship and in order to know how to address someone, age is crucial. That's why it's not rude to ask someone's age in Korea. It’s normal, I assure you. My own younger siblings don't call me by my name because that would be disrespectful. I don't know about the "keeping their age a secret" sorta thing. That's just weird. Sorry about that, interviewees. Yes, Korean culture can seem nosy to foreigners. I gotta tell y'all, it's just the way we roll and show affection. If strangers do it to you, well, it might be because you're a foreigner, so sorry in advance. In these sort of matters, we're quite blunt and straightforward and I honestly like it like this. If it really bothers you, living in Korea might not be for you. As for the "wowing" every time a foreigner even speaks one word of Korean ... I shake my head. I’m pretty sure foreigners would not prefer it if Koreans pretended they couldn't understand them or even looked down on them snootily because the French are like that (I know because I lived in France for a year). I'm telling you, when I was growing up in the States, everyone assumed I was Chinese, or at least Japanese. Korea is the most underrated East Asian country. Speaking Korean ain't like speaking Chinese or Japanese. So you can’t really blame the people that have for thousands and thousands of years lived in a homogenous society to be shocked when foreigners speak Korean. As I said before, these things take time. Please try to be more understanding. Everyone, America is the melting pot of the world: America doesn't have the same concept of "foreigner" like other countries do. Consequently, of course Koreans are going to ask you where you're from. Of course they're going to ask you how long you've been in Korea. YOU ARE A FOREIGNER. Trust me, here I am, growing up in West Africa, I've been here for 7 years, nearly half my life, and people always stare at me, want to touch my skin and my hair, express surprise if I can speak their language, etc. etc. But I can’t complain BECAUSE I AM A FOREIGNER. What else can I expect? Practically no tourists come to visit this country ... I'm one of the only "white" people in my city. So, yes, no matter how much you know, no matter what, you will ALWAYS be a foreigner. Again, Korea is a homogenous society, populated by Koreans. I'm sincerely sorry if y'all receive discrimination cuz that still ain't right. And of course there are lots of things that should be changed. I'm not denying that. As for, the club thing not allowing that black woman in. Again, my sincerest apologies. Please don’t think badly of the rest of Korea just because of a few bad experiences. There are some crazy discrimination cases in America, but that doesn’t mean America isn’t a great country! There have been some other club cases like that, but that's not just related to being black, I'll have you know. I've heard of this before and it applies to all foreigners. The reasoning was largely either because clubs wanted to regulate their customers to Koreans (sorry to say, but foreigners do have body odor) or because of foreigners causing trouble before. The latter is more common, I believe at least, and it has happened before: foreigners starting things (the higher crime rate in Itaewon is largely due to foreigners). If the club doesn’t want foreigners, many just make excuses, not saying anything outright. Yes, there is going to be discrimination everywhere. When I was in Italy, all these white people kept staring at us which was weird cuz I thought Italy would be more used to foreigners. Apparently not, I guess. But please listen: Korea is a tiny, underrated country in East Asia that has been there for thousands and thousands of years, through invasions, wars, and worse, but we’re still there. No outsiders really came (beside the missionaries) because Korea was simply unknown. So please, don’t expect anything grand like the States. We’re still getting used to foreigners. Korea ain’t America, y’all gotta know that. So please, please, please don’t complain about people being shocked to see foreigners. I wanted to write this because some elements of this interview angered me and I wanted to explain the other side. I fully understand theses interviewees, having grown up as the minority in West Africa, but some parts of this just weren’t right. Anyway, my sincerest apologies for the bad experiences these interviewees have had.

I used to be a part-time tour guide during my summer breaks, and this one time i had to accompany few tourists who were coming back from their trip. They were bit grumpy when i got there to pick them up (understandable, i was late by a hour, i was leaving other tourists there) and understandably was very angry at me. I apologized and we got into a silent car ride. And then she asked, how old are you, what do you study etc etc. I was 17, i majored in architecture at the time. And wow, that personality change. Koreans are very quick to judge you on your "status". And that is very gross.

I had the same experience as the first guy with the bag situation. It was my first day in Korea. I was waiting at the subway station with my huge luggage and a small carry on. People were crowding around me and waiting for the subway too. There was an ahjussi with his wife was behind me. The minute the doors opened, people started rushing in while squishing me in the process. Without saying a word, the ahjussi behind me quickly went in front and took the carry on from my hand.. it happened so fast, I just said "Oh!" and quickly squeezed my way behind him. Once inside, he quickly turned around, returned the carry on, bowed his head slightly and disappeared to another cart with his wife. I'll be honest, at first I thought he was going to steal my bag lol... but he was just trying to be helpful because I was stuck....or maybe he was annoyed that I was holding him up behind me lol. Either way, I was shocked but I still thanked him!

It's more than that, Korea remains a caste based society. Koreans ask all those questions in order to determine your position, relative to their own, in that caste system. Once they have determined that relationship, then they will behave toward you "appropriately" meaning they will treat you as superior, inferior, or a peer from a societal perspective, not a humanity perspective. The questions are to "size you up" so they know the proper way to behave toward you, what is acceptable, what isn't, within their cultural norms.

Brothers and sisters, I am Korean and Im here to sincerely apologize every discrimination that you have gone through in Korea. I consider racism is the worst thing that people can ever do to one another and its even worse when the discrimination is based just on one’s skin color or nationality. But kindly understand the poor Korean who committed racism on you. Korea is a developing country and even though its economy is high level and buildings, fashion and other things are modern, there are some people who have failed to catch up with having a appropriate and polite mindset and ended up being immature. They are bad but pity persons too because they are not learnt of what they are not supposed to do or say. Please remember that there has always been nice Koreans too and if these kind of revelations and regrets go on surely you could find entirely changed Korea in a near future.

I understand some of the issues mentioned, of course. However, I don't get why they get annoyed by things like being offered to carrying their things or being praised for their Korean skills, really. I've been to Korea twice, and at least in my experience, they were mostly nice (and I'm obese, a thing that not only in Korea is something a person might be discriminated for). When I was in a subway, I gave my seat to an elderly woman. She was so thankful, she immediately asked me to carry my bag. I just said it wasn't necessary and that was it. The elderly man that was originally sitting next to me, ended up giving me his seat (among all the Korean people in a cramped subway) when he had to leave. I guess he saw my respectful action and appreciated it. Same with Korean language. It's nice that they appreciate the fact that you made an effort to learn the language. I came across a few foreigners who expressed to feel discriminated because no one would talk to them, while they've never tried to learn a single word of Korean. One of them had been living there for two years, I found that disrespectful. And foreigners are sometimes not allowed in clubs because they are more bound to get into violent fights. I was harrased by a foreigner in a club, I ended up leaving the place in fear. Something like that never happened with a Korean guy. I mean, of course we can feel it's unfair, but they are probably just avoiding problems. The age thing is also misunderstood, if you know a bit about their culture you'll understand that's their way of chitchatting and also their entire communication system is based on age, so it's only natural for them to ask. In fact, sometimes just for being a foreigner you get benefits too, like free entry to some clubs or different events. And the guy saying "it doesn't matter if I lived there for 3 years they keep asking where are you from". If you look non-asian, and you wasn't born there, then you are indeed a foreigner who happens to live in Korea. There are Asians living in my country, and it doesn't matter for how long they've been here, it's only natural to ask them where they came from, in a friendly way.

Thank you! Half of the stuff mentioned in the video made me wanna scream. Why would you move to a different country if you’re not willing to understand and respect the culture? The age thing might be rude in the west but isn’t in the east. Can people stop calling things rude or annoying when it’s something they didn’t grow up with?
@elianameaguad

@@Mel-jl8dt "Why would you move to a different country if you are not willing to understand and respect their culture" That's KEY. Of course there are things to develop as in every country (regarding discrimination for example), but hating to be asked your age or being praised about speaking Korean is a non-sense to me. If a foreigner speaks Spanish well, I'll praise them as a way of encouraging them. Plus Korean language is not 'mainstream'! English or Spanish speaking people is more common, but Korea is a small country that gained international interest just a few years ago. That's why I understand their surprise. Trying to hold conversations with the lady in the street food cart, with ajummas in the subway or the man in the convenience store was one of the best experiences while being there. They were all smiling at my basic Korean skills and made me feel their joy. What can be so terrible about that?

@Mel-jl8dt 3 года назад
@@elianameaguad I totally agree with you! I’ve sadly never had the chance to go to Korea yet (I was supposed to go 6weeks with a language school but covid ruined everything) but I’d imagine people are really happy when someone tries to communicate with them in Korean. The fact that they might automatically speak English to foreigners is probably because they just want to make their life easier based on what I know of their culture. The only person who had a valid reason to call the situation he encountered a problem was the POC man. He faced racism the others didn’t. They faced what any foreigner would in any country.
@elianameaguad
@elianameaguad 3 года назад
@@Mel-jl8dt you understand their intentions and you didn't have the chance to be there (yet!). In my case, a group of teenagers talked to me in English and they were from a church, I chatted with them a little bit, said I wasn't interested, and they were super polite. Another time, I heard a heavenly 'do you need help?' when I was terribly lost, and the girl was adorable and just helped me. Store ladies are working, they are told to work like that and offer you products. The guy who complains they guide you towards a wrong direction, that also happens everywhere and it's not always from a bad place. Happened to me in my country and I also might have guided people wrongly in my hometown some time, as I have a terrible sense of direction, it wasn't a bad intention. In fact, once I asked a couple for directions and they walked with me for 5 blocks in the opposite direction they were going!! so they walked 10 blocks to help me and turn back to their starting point. Another time I was absolutely lost and I only spotted one person jogging, asked her about a place and she took her time to call somebody on the phone to be sure she was leading me the right way. Maybe I was lucky? In both situations I tried my best to talk in Korean, I never started a conversation saying "excuse me" in English. I don't know, I just feel that they mention things that are more of a personal issue than a foreigner problem. The word problem just feels too big haha. I hope you can visit Korea soon and share your first hand experiences!! Just be aware of 'Church' people, as there are a few cults out there, but with your mindset you won't experience many difficulties :)
@Mel-jl8dt
@Mel-jl8dt 3 года назад
@@elianameaguad you’ve pinpoint exactly what it is! They talk about personal experience and generalize them. Out of the all the videos I’ve watched of people talking about Korea this one seems very biased. All the other videos mentioned how helpful the people were and all. Of course every country has its flaws and Korea has been romanticized a lot lately for some reason. It isn’t the perfect country but it comes to respect they are much better than us. Racism is an issue over there because they don’t have a lot of foreigners so they behave the way we did when we first started getting foreigners. It doesn’t excuse it but they have to go through the process we went through. People following you in the shops happen in a lot of places too so I’m kinda confused as to why this is on the list. I was followed in a shop in England like.. that’s an everywhere problem. Either way it’s important to remember that the perfect country doesn’t exist and that when we visit a place we shouldn’t expect the population to adapt to us but we should adapt to them and I feel like a lot of white people forget that... Thank you so so much! I can’t wait I’ve been taking more and more Korean classes so I can get by when I get there at least

@@ShaferHart We dont really *worship* whites tho... to be honest many korean people are interested in talking with foreigners of all races but black people are usually more tall and bulked up so people who grew up in korea could be pretty intimidated by them and avoid them.. also another thing that I think has to do with stereotypes about korean people is our kinda violent language. Did you know that the korean language has the most amount of curse words?🤣 But to be honest among koreans saying bad stuff to each other isnt really a serious thing unless its reaaaally offensive. We just use it as a sign of friendship😂 I also agree that many foreigners could be offended by koreans talking about them behind their back, cause we koreans have our own community. Throughout our country's history we have been invaded many times so at those times people sticked together and went though hard times, for example korea is the country that recovered from the economic crisis the fastest. At that time people just gave all of their gold to the country and they melted it into ingots and sold it away and we did many campaignes to fill out the debt to IMF. When there is a foreigner, it is just natural for us to talk among ourselves because we dont know them well.. sorry if you were offended by some korean😭😭

lol at the guy at 2:19 saying he isn't treated like a Korean for being there for three years. I was born in the United States, I basically can only speak English but I'm always asked "Where are you from" because of my ethnicity. When I tell them for example California or New York they say "No, where are you really from" or something to that effect. This is done by both blacks and whites. I do my best not to be offended or bothered by it anymore. And another to thing to consider is they just might not know how to word the question properly for example "What's your ethnic background?". This isn't a Korea specific problem.

Is asking where you're "really from" seen as a negative in the US? Because I live in the UK, specifically London, where there are more foreigners than Englishmen (including myself) and it is seen as quite normal, almost expected, to be asked where you're from. Since the majority of people are foreigners, asking where you come from (the country of your ethnicity) is normal and is not at all seen as a negative. Even the ethnically British people are asked this question. Just curious.
@loquatmuncher

@@maryyencruorem564 its not so much offensive as it is presumptuous. And it gets annoying when youre asked on a regular basis. It creates a feeling of alienation and can bring up bad memories of instances of blatant racism (id bet that almost every asian american can recall at least one). The reality is that we we're born and raised in the same country as the person asking. i dont expect the person asking to know this just by looking at me. if you want know about my ethnicity, then ask about my ethnicity. if you want to know about where i was born then ask where im from.
