A castle rich in history with mentions of Robert the Bruce, the Lord of the Isles, the Macsweens, and MacMillans to name a few. An unusual Norman in design castle. Some interesting archaeological finds here too.

What a marvelous journey through history! I'm a Sweeney who lives in America and don't have the money to travel to what I consider my ancestral castle, so to experience it through the walk around that you have provided has lifted my spirits to an all time high!! Thank you soooo much! 😊

Another place I'll need to visit sometime. Fascinating place and Marion Campbell has certainly left the area a legacy. Older people are so full of local knowledge and much of it's being lost. Thank you so much for this.

Marion Campbell and Mary Sandeman, her partner in crime while tramping the area in search of historical gems, are really two folk I hold in high regard. I have most of what they published, and find it a great starting point for any trip out in the area!

My great grandmother was Sweeney and after a lot of research and digging I found I'm a MacSweeney. It was so much fun to research and find out where my family came from.

The surname McQuen was first found in on the Isles of Skye and Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Leòdhas), where they were originally a branch of the MacDonalds of Clanranald. But although the MacQueens held lands of Garafad on the Isle of Skye for several centuries it is likely that the first MacQueen was the Lord of Knapdale in Argyllshire who held Castle Sween... We would love to take our castle back...

Since you have no clan chief, or even held the castle for hundreds of years, I would leave in the 'capable' hands of Historic Scotland, lol. Thanks for watching!

I was looking for info on this castle and came across your video...very informative! Did you park in the lay-by opposite the entrance to the holiday park or is there somewhere else nearby to park? Another thing...are you 2 regular visitors to Belfast/NI? I could swear that I know your faces from somewhere and it's not from youtube videos. And that's a Belfast or maybe north coast accent I'm hearing. Anyway, new subscriber here as you have a tonne of great stuff on your channel!

Yes, the layby out on the road. I'm originally a Lisburn lass, then Belfast, then Portrush, then Greenock and finally near Oban!! So a mix of accents. Martin has never been to norn iron so he must just have a familiar coupon 🤔 😉 Thanks for watching, and your sub is appreciated 🙏 ❤

Sadly, the castle is now surrounded by a hideous camping park and contains false and misleading information supplied by Scottish Heritage in regards to an attempt by John MacSween to retake the castle. Sweyn, who is the eponymous ancestor of the MacSweeneys, was from the Ui Imair, and was of Norse-Gaelic ancestry. He was a son of Kinead (Kenneth) and was described as King of the Gal-Gaedhil (Foreigner-Gaels). He died in 1034 AD. The claim that the MacSween were of Irish descent and related to the O'Neills is a fabrication, no doubt created to smoothe their way into medieval Tyr Connail. The MacSweens also built Skipness and Locranza castles, which gave them control of the Kilmacrennan Sound and the approaches to the Firth of Clyde, which was a major viking trading route. Skipness is one of the first castles in Britain to have crosslet loopholes in it's curtain walls (only Kenilworth castle in England had this architectural innovation earlier), which probably came from their association with Edward I, to whom they were vassal lords. They had opposed Robert the Bruce, who they viewed as an Anglo-Norman usurper, though the claim that they attempted to retake the castle with the help of the English is false, as Letters Patent clearly show that Edward II granted John MacSween all of his lands and titles, providing he could take them with his own forces. The Scots, like the Irish, seem to have a form of amnesia when it comes to their medieval history, especially in regards to the West Highlands and Hebrides.
