I love the bridge. That is such a beautiful area and the workings of the river are fascinating. Love the history. The school is beautiful. So is the hotel. I love those stone building churches. Beautiful architecture. What a history of the Hanging Knoll! Thank you!
A great video Julie. I remember collecting seaweed at Ardentallen, at the foot of Lerags for our wee tattie patch at Kilbride! All the crofter's in Lerags had the right to collect seaweed from the shore for their crops! I would think that my old Uncle He,himself would be among the last people in the glen to do this! How sad that the Victorians ruined a lot of the early history of Connel. A lot of them did not seem to care what happened, as they built homes and holiday homes to visit in the summer. I remember going over Connel Bridge when the railway was there, and there was only one lane for the cars. We paid a shilling ( 5p ) to a man that controlled the cars going over, and big red lights flashed when the trains were approaching, as there was not any room for the cars and trains to operate at the same time. Your videos are really super and bring back a lot of memories from when I was young. ...old Tich.
I was pleasantly surprised to see the seaweed still being gathered, it's an irish traditional too, although we more often dry it out to make dulce, a delicious if a little chewy treat! From the first day we took the canoe onto Loch Feochan, I have fancied heading over to Ardentallen and walking up to Kilbride from that side. I believe there was once even an ancient standing stone at the station. I'm very grateful that you share these memories with me, as i jog your memory, it means a lot. Brilliant recollection about the bridge, must have been an experience trying to get the timing right so you weren't waiting as I presume the train would have had first dibs before a car xxx
@@ExploringScotlandsHistory Thanks Julie. The seaweed that was likely the same as that you called dulce,we called Caregean ( excuse the spelling ) ..old Tich
@@ExploringScotlandsHistory yeah well I’m the same way . Been living just outside of Boston and never did the Freedom Trail . I think living in our place for so long we take it for granted figuring I’ll do it someday . Glad you got to it though it was really good . I don’t know how you do it . Finding the time that you give to us out here who get to sit back and enjoy . Thank you
A wonderful Video of the place WE are spending our Holidays. Interesting. We found a fiew spots, we going to see while having our walk around Here.👍🏴
Last time I was at Connel it was a dreich January day. It looks lovely in the sunshine. Must head back that way sometime. Thanks for another great video.
I'm a born and bred Englishman living on the south coast in various places most of my life, but this area has a strong connection to me as ive spent many holidays here man and boy. My grandfather was a scottish GP born in Kilmarnock decorated in WW1 but spent the last 10 years or so of his life north of the bridge in a house he built in the late 50s overlooking loch etive. My mums sister continued to live in the house, called Dundonald, until the late 90s when she moved down south to live out her remaining years. My parents were married in the church in 1962. I might live in England but this area is my spiritual home, and your video makes it plain to see why!
I'll look forward to more of your videos. I know Oban well, I'm old enough to remember Wm Lows supermarket, 2 Menzies bookshops on the high street, and the steamship that regularly sailed from Oban to Fort William. I also remember having to press a button to get the lights to change on Connel bridge before they brought in the automated lights!
You took the words right out of my mouth....Its freezing! A great massive iron bridge. Those rapids look impressive. Gorgeous stone school. The Hotel looks lovely, that would be a lovely place to stay in. Beautiful architecture. You were lucky to get such a beautiful sunny day. Love the views. Executions in those days were barbaric. A great episode, thank you.
Great video! Such a beautiful area. I hope one day you can get into the church to take pictures. The stain glass looks very pretty. There is something special seeing it on the inside though. I'm sure right now, most things are closed. Hopefully that won't be for much longer. Although I'm glad I've had this year. It's made us slow down a bit, and I've had the chance to learn about the history of the little city we live in, as well as watching your video's which I have really enjoyed! I saw a television show about a trip some people took to Scotland, and they visited some of the places you've shared with us. I was telling my husband all about the things they didn't tell about, because I remembered all the things you told us! Thank you! I look forward to your next video. Have a wonderful week.
All places of worship are currently closed, but that will be resolved sooner rather than later if folk behave themselves lol. i think this year has taught me that if I don't want to do something, I can actually say no, I'm no longer the yes lady ha ha. I'm glad you have been able to share my research (and show off to your husband ha ha). History needs to be shared, or it will be repeated....
