James is definitely one of my favorite protagonist of any game simply for the fact of how human they made him feel, and reminds how quickly someone could lose that very humanity when pushed past their limit.
I agree with everything else except the soundtrack. SH3 has great OST (introducing Mary Elizabeth’s haunting vocals) but imo nothing beats SH2’s ambient perfection. Probably my favourite OST of all time \../
SH 2 is hands down THE best game I've ever played. However, as a survival game SH 3 is way better. SH 2 is just downright depressing, with the best story told in a video game. SH 3 is just utterly disturbing in it's sheer madness. Survival wise, you really have to suck at gaming if you can't beat SH 2, unless you play on hard which actually beccomes a challenfe
True. SH2 is the first game that almost made me cry, but SH3 almost made me puke by how disturbing the atmosphere is, especially the church segment where blood and rust cover all of the walls
Silent hill 2 has one of the best plot in gaming history. Silent Hill 3 in terms of atmosphere and gameplay is the most scariest and creepy installment of the series.
Both are good, but SH2 is superior imo. SH3 continued the storyline of the cult, gods, etc. which, although great games, are convoluted stories. SH2 story/plot is simplistic and straight forward, with complex symbolism supporting the simplicity. SH2 is also very emotional and easy to connect with.
Sorry I just felt the story and characters in SH3 were kinda corny and tough to get into. As soon as I started playing SH2 I was lost in it. Yes, I am lost in SH2.
@@rednovember0179 not really. I feel the performances in 2 actually contributed to how mess up and socially awkward the characters in 2 have. Though 3 obviously has better characters and Heather’s reactions are the reactions I can see someone has when they are lost in Silent Hill. I also like how her story is executed. (Spoiler Alert, even though the game is over a decade old!) I like that Heather being a reincarnated Alessa doesn’t mean she just going to change her whole personality and start acting all sweet and innocent like how Claudia remembers her. In fact, the game goes miles to say that Heather being Alessa doesn’t mean she is a cardboard copy of Alessa.
2 is a game I could enjoy continuously and be creeped out a bit. 3 is creepy and I just can't handle the jump scares and very very dark areas, I gotta take a break cause this shit is scary but mostly through the jump scares
SH2 is art, SH3 is an experience. Buy a a video game SH3 was better. SH2 would be better as a movie than a game. The enemies felt more like were and up toys to evade.
I honestly did not find 2 scary, 3 was the scariest and best in the series. Plus the story in 2 was more confusing than disturbing. 3 is more disturbing, more horrorific, more creepy and has better and more monster varieties than 2.
I personally found Silent Hill 3 to be far more engaging since I imposed myself onto the character of Heather. She was very easy to self-insert while still revealing bits and pieces of her personality through examining objects, rather than outwardly stating them stupidly in the middle of a cutscene. James just seemed too boring to me, and I get that particular aspect is a part of the theme presented of appearance vs. reality, but Heather was far more easy to relate to. On top of that, I guess I just enjoy Silent Hill 3's visual design due to its influences, much like people enjoy 2's influences. The primary influence of Silent Hill 3's art is Hieronymus Bosch, whereas 2's art was Francis Bacon. It really all comes down to personal preference, because in terms of play-style, they're nearly identical. Silent Hill 2 admittedly does have 3 beat in terms of story, but I found myself feeling like the final few areas from the Labyrinth to the Hotel to be a boring chore. Towards the end of a game, I shouldn't be feeling that way, and thus, I shut it off and haven't played through to the ending to this day. Maybe I'll find the energy some day.
I really disliked SH2, The story was boring, it lacked puzzles, walking to places was long enough and you could just walk trough monsters without feeling any threat......not to mention the boss fights dear lord....the last boss (Mary) didn't even feel like you were actually fighting a final boss. It was just weak for me :/ SH 3 is one I felt that was good, I felt scared the whole time, the setting was horribly scary, you were always alert because you didn't know what to expect, some scenes were so damn scary, I loved the mall part and sometimes when inside the stores, scary shit would happen, not to mention the haunted house part xD It also had some fun puzzles :) SH3 was an actual horror game to me.
Silent hill 2 does a better job of defying the aspect of the series sad, depressing and mysterious. The atmosphere and identity Is what kept me playing
Played SH2 for the first time this year on ps2 and was entirely spooked! Haven't played SH3 yet but it looks very interesting... really thinking about spending $160 on it 😅😅😅 Update: I ended up spending $169.95 on SH3 😩
For me, Silent Hill 2 has a superior story, while Silent Hill 3 is scarier. Personally, I value story over scare factor and Silent Hill 2 still did a great job of creeping me out with its more subtle horror, so that one wins for me. Overall, I love them both.
Silent Hill 2 just gets better with age. SH2 is art and I was hooked from the start. Silent Hill 3 is good but I honestly believe that it wouldn’t get nearly as many favourable reviews if it wasn’t riding the wave from SH2
personality i found SH3 the better game i never found SH2 scary or even chilling for that matter mainly cos the game itself was easy very easy in fact i had way too much ammo and health items which in turn made me less scared and the monsters well they weren't threating at all i can just kill them quite easy but silent hill 3 was the reverse that game creeped the living shit out of me the area's the monsters scared me because i know i will get hurt by them cos some of them are fast as fuck which in turn i almost had no ammo (even tho i saved them up only for boss battle's) and almost no healing items (i only had one ampole when i finished the final boss) which i remember i was so damn scared and hoping there wasn't a 2nd phase (thankfully there wasn't) while yes SH2 story is fantastic but the thing is it's a game not a flim and SH2 is great for playing once but not again my opinion but SH3 i want to play again which if i feel like i want to replay it after beating it then i know it's a fantastic game for me
@@Phantom_Gabriel play it on very hard action and very hard riddle mode the way its supposed to be played. Turn the lights off and hook your t.v. up to a stereo or surround sound. Dont come out for atleast an hour.
I like the style you give to your videos, the way you explain things without spoiling the plots, etc. AND your voice! Wow. I like it not only because it's so deep, but also because you talk at a good pace, very clearly. Some youtubers speak very fast and are somewhat hard to understand for us non-native speakers. So yeah, I just suscribed to your channel. By the way, where's the Silent Hill 1 video? I can't find it.
Thank you, that means a lot. Also the future video I was referring to has not been made yet. I kind of dropped the ball there, but hopefully I make that video soon enough.
Nice overall review. I just remember Silent Hill 2 genuinely scaring the hell out of me back when it was first released like no other game or movie, before or since. It's genuinely terrifying, and yet with such a great narrative. And then of course there is the ending... just wow. My wife was extremely skeptical about games as an art-form until she saw SH2. That's how powerful it was back then.
When I was a kid I liked silent hill 3 more, but now that I'm older and I've just recently replayed both of them I realize that 2 is superior in terms of game design and story. Not to rant on for too long, but two has more fleshed out locations with sensible design and smart puzzles that are never too difficult to figure out. Three on the other hand has completely Labyrinthian map design in the worst way possible, and completely nonsensical puzzles if you have riddle on hard. Two has a beautiful self-contained story that paints SH the town as a place that exists within your own head, a manifestation of your own personal demons. Three, on the other hand, has a convoluted cult theme that makes the town too literally about actual demons and kills any mystery. The third game is still super scary and creepy in many places, but it's missing something.
Silent Hill 2 has a beautiful story line! Think about all the characters besides James Sunderland! Every character has a unique story of their own. And everyone of them also came to Silent Hill cause of their own karma. Maria is a figment of James imagination we start to realize that when she’s killed multiple times and we find out the truth. I felt that Silent Hill 2 probably took more than at least 2 years make! Maybe even 3 right after the first Silent Hill they went to work on the second! Silent Hill 3 I bet took a year to make, it has a amazing soundtrack no doubt! Silent Hill 2 soundtrack is a masterpiece tho! Silent Hill 3 should’ve been a long playable game! Instead of short played, cause Silent Hill 2 has so many gems you can find in the game! Especially that mini Maria game “A Star is Born”! It’s crazy how we don’t know exactly how Maria was brought up and made. All we know is she’s an figment of James past and imagination! With Heather in Silent 3 she’s a idgaf type white girl with a lot of attitude! Which makes her character badass but don’t do very much! Silent Hill 2 just takes you somewhere, it takes you a place where they’re others that are broken tryna figure out life and whether they should face their fears in their head or die with it 🗣💯!
2 to me had the better story hands down. Also, the scare factor was up there with the debut of pyramid head. It also brought the iconic song Promise which was used in the movie. However, the 3rd one was more in depth with how the story originated. Granted, 2 is not a direct sequel to 3 like how Resident Evil 2 was to 3, 3 made me feel uneasy such as in the subway. Such a common place but dead and gloomy with a sense of dread. One place you think you could feel safe with monsters around but nothing was there. Each has there high points but in preference, 2 was better. It was also more of a challenge than 3.
Shuuuure thing SH 2 ... in SH 3 the adventure is short but in SH2 it’s huge adventure.. although the city in SH 3 better than 2 but only one time you walkthrough it.. before three weeks I found SH2 costs 500$ I took it without hesitation but if it was SH3 I will not pay that on it it don’t deserve.. SH 2 is the best 👍👍
I really do think the SH 2 is better than SH3. However, both games are truly great and SH series just struggled after these two games. I think you should start making videos talking about different series such as SH, RE, etc...
Oh its just in my overall channel. Whether it be an ObscuReview, an IFT, Rank em Up or a simple review. I tend to just talk about anything that is in my mind at the time. lol
I like the first silent hill just as much as the second one, because the combat system is really fun. I mean come on, the handgun in SH1 is so satisfying to use.
Yeah I get that, actually feel like 1 had the best combat, the satisfying pop of the handgun, battering nurses with a bloody great spike hammer. Knocking dogs out of mid air with the pipe. The later instalments just weren't the same with the combat
Silent Hill 2 was better when I first played silent hill 2 I was just a giant chicken and took me 9 hours to beat it then for the second time it took me 5 to almost 6 hours to beat. I loved silent hill 2 but for silent hill 3 oh gosh it was so hard but I least on the first boss I didn't die but I have died 10 times and I was like this game sucks and it's too hard to beat I would rather play the ps2 edition instead
I disagree friend, the difference in gameplay between two and three was significant. Three had tighter, more challenging combat which helped spike the fear factor. The enemies were more varied and unpredictable, and having a parry made it a lot more fun and engaging. To be honest, I had less fun with two's combat than either one or three, but I agree that it had the best plot.
Just finished silent hill 3 for the first time tonight. My opinion? SH2 is scarier and builds more tension like a david lynch film. SH3 is still scary but the tension is built in short bursts and blown out much like a modern horror movies loses tension through jump scares. There are more weapon types in SH3 though which I found quite nice. In terms of main protagonists, Heather(Alissa, Cheryl whatever her name was) Showed more personality. Was it a personality I liked? No, spoilt brat if you ask me. Although we see more and more through the story why she neglects the normal characters she meets throughout. Where on the other hand, James only has his desire to find Mary and we don’t get much if at all any personality other than his slightly southern accent. But lastly, the most important part is the story and SH2 blows every silent hills game out of the water when it comes to story. The places you explore all have a certain ambience and when you backtrack, it can feel even more eery than before. The characters within the story are dark and are believable. Maria is a breath of fresh air and she adds a whole new perspective to the story as you play, at times questioning yourself on whether she is who she makes out to be. not to mention the pyschopath kid who turns up occasionaly and the little girl bratt who locks you in a room... but to be honest, james was an idiot falling for it. Was I not the only one screaming at the tv DONT GO IN THERE! ITS A TRAP! anyways, that being said and about 3 hours ago completing SH3 for the first time, I can safely say, I enjoyed both games but I enjoyed SH2 more. Both great games and I shouldn’t be compared but eh what the heck, its fun!
One thing I have to give to SH3 is although the enemies are a bit uninspired, I liked the fact that you had to pick your weapon based on who was running up to kill you. The Maul did great against the bloater looking guys, and crawlers but it sucked vs nurses. Katana could kill 3 nurses at the same time but sucked vs crawlers. Shotgun was OP but ammo was scarce. Pistol was good against dogs but worthless against the wasps. It added alot to the survival dynamic that SH2 didn't really bother with. SH2 was more conventional in that you keep upgrading to better weapons until you get the butcher sword or the chainsaw. SH2 was the best but not because SH3 was a slouch. Far from it.
2 is my favorite. 3 was good but I think 2 is the textbook definition of silent hill, I had no clue how 2 was going to play out. 3 gave me a been here done that feeling
The true is that silent hill 2 is just better game BUT silent hill 3 got best protagonist in The series i know yall love James but over all Heather is better made character and The one who just did a good job i dont think anyone hates her because shes just a good character . Im not saying that James is worst character im just saying i liked playing AS Heather more than James :)
I like James more, thus I like Silent Hill 2 more. Heather really got on my nerves and her attitude took away from the impact that the game could've had on me.
que se busca al jugar un silent hill? el miedo , el terror, y cual da mas miedo, por su historia , por sus personajes , por su musica , ambientacion? si señores Silent hill 3 en mi opinion , aunque por debajo de silent hill original
This should have way more views, your arguments are very solid and you understand the games and what the devs were aiming witch each entry, at least until 4
Man silent hill 3’s monster design was a flat out joke. They were a mess and not scary what so ever. If it wasn’t for the atmosphere it would be a total let down. Silent hill 2 chilled far beyond simple atmosphere
A couple of claims you made are not true, I'm afraid. For example your first point. How can you say the gameplay of both games are the same? In Silent Hill 3, you have to press the attack button multiple times depending on how many strikes you want to land. There are also different variations of attacks with your melee weapons, whereas there are only two in Silent Hill 2. Moreover, you can guard against an attack in Silent Hill 3. And what about strategizing whether you want to wear the bullet proof vest that slows you down, but reduces the damage enemies hit you with? The silencer is a similar story. Another example: Being able to die falling off a ledge. Did you actually think these through before you made that statement? Well, whatever. Regarding the story of both games, I also have to disagree with you, as I understand how deep Silent Hill 3's story really is. It's MUCH more than just you having to stop the cult and defeating the "evil" creature Claudia calls God. I wonder if people actually get why Silent Hill 3's plot and its execution are absolutely amazing. I give you a hint: Claudia is not evil.
The different attacks are just animations and dont provide any new skill or edge in killing enemies. Falling of ledges is a new mechanic, that also exists in SH2, granted in only one area to throw off the player, but in SH3, you can only fall off ledges on Hard mode. The bulletproof vest and silencer are items, not huge gameplay changers honestly, and oh yeah... you can block in Silent Hill 2 as well. I have to say it, but a couple of the claims you made are not true. Also SH3s plot is very predictable and not as deep as youre making it out to be.
@@KingRey. James can guard? I don't remember him being able to. Whatever. I don't argue about the gameplay anymore. The story, on the other hand, is worth elaborating on a little more. Before Heather witnessing Harry's death, the plot was very mysterious and not predictable at all to me. My instruction booklet doesn't reveal that Silent Hill 3 is a sequel to Silent Hill 1 which completely blew my mind away. I had the fondest memories of Silent Hill. Silent Hill 3's tie to Silent Hill 1 isn't revealed right away. That's why I received the first positive shocker from that TV showing Cheryl 17 years ago crying for Harry's help. However, this didn't confirm yet how deeply connected Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3 are. The confirmation came with Heather witnessing Harry being dead and her follow-up encounter with Claudia. At that point, Claudia comes off like some sort of evil witch. Moving on, Heather's wish of going to Silent Hill should give you even more goosebumps if you've played Silent Hill 1 some years ago. Well, let's get to the point more quickly! It's true that you having to kill the "god" is a bit predictable. Just not as much as you might want to claim. 1. "God" grows within Heather's body. So how exactly is she gonna fight "Her" if "She" pops out of her? 2. The more hate Heather feels, the faster she's going to give birth to "God", which is also a nice addition to the plot with Claudia fueling her hatred. 3. What will "God" look like and what exactly will "She" do? What can we expect from "Her" regarding the paradise? 4. You start to sympathize with Claudia and begin to understand her motives if you really get what the story is supposed to convey. You might even side with her, as you may get the feeling it'd be best for everyone if "God" brought "Paradise" upon the world. Who wouldn't like to be happy forever? You may very well be torn between Heather's and Claudia's side. And after you killed "God", you still wonder for all eternity what would have happened if nothing and nobody had stood in "God's" way. That's roughly how deep Silent Hill 3's story goes. Even if you think that's still not very deep, did you at least get it before I explained it?
@@undyingsoul3949 Its pretty obvious as you play the game where the story ends up and the multiple ways of interpreting the story are also pretty clear cut. Maybe its the amount of horror movies I've seen, but again nothing too deep at least compared to other stories in media. Im not saying the plot is bad, but it pales in comparison to the multiple storylines in SH2.
Okay am I the only one here that found combat with James harder then Henry or Heather? I can't ever get James to do his ground smash basic attack, he never does what I want to do compared to any other game
One is emotionally charged, subtle and grounded- the other is about someone with superpowers, who's super special, Heather is only really interesting becuz of that.
Got a like from me. Literally exactly what video I was looking for now it is back compatible for xbone time to start off with number 2 I think. All about the story. Cheers bud
SH2 has a better plot but SH3 is a better Silent Hill game. SH2 didn't require the town, its people, its cult, its history, etc etc to be brilliant. It didn't need SH1's plot. It was more about James' personal psychological horror. The setting could've been anywhere and the plot would still work. Much like Jacob's Ladder, the setting wasn't necessarily important to the plot. It's similar to Shutter Island but in Shutter Island, the setting is relevant to the plot due to the protagonist actually being a patient of the asylum. SH2, James has no connection to Silent Hill besides a vacation. SH3 is the direct sequel to SH1 which involved the town, its people, its cult, its history, its crime activities, etc etc.
Thats the point of the town the though. The cult and Cheryl's story is just one story. The point of Silent Hill is that its a different place for each person that visits. Its a purgatory for people to come face to face with their demons. SH2 would not work in another setting.
@@KingRey. not really. That's a fan speculation due to the "sacred place" comment. Aside from speculation, SH1 involved the cult largely but also involved the drug trafficking and the hospital. The town and its people are involved with Alessa's situation. Making the town very very relevant. For SH2, it could've been set in a town not called Silent Hill and it will still work because the town in SH2 has no relevance. The only relevancy the town has for SH2 is that it was a town that James and Mary vacationed in. Nothing else. No mention of its people that makes it relevant to the story. The town plays no role besides being able to manifest one's nightmare, which is just speculation. Unlike James, Alessa is actually psychic and has supernatural powers to devour the town with her powers. For James, it's more in his head. Brookhaven hospital mentioned some delusional patients that has sorta the same problems James had. It may not be the town. It's probably all in his head. That's why he, Eddie, and Angela see it differently. Whereas for SH1 and SH3, everyone regardless of who, only sees the town as Alessa's nightmare. She had the power to do so.
I liked your video, but we must have very different ways of appreciating and looking at these games. For one, SH3 soundtrack *is* amazing. I totally agree with you there, but this earned me far more points than would be represented by just one check. It got me into a whole new genre of music growing up. SH2 was a torturous experience. SH2 seemed like a selfish tale revolving around the bland James. His story was interesting, but in the end a similar twist was better done in the movie The Machinist. If you're a regular consumer of psychological horror films the story is nothing amazing. The world building in SH3 was totally overlooked in the video. Reading about the philosophy of the cult and the treatment of Alessa was very compelling for me personally as someone who loved SH1. I don't think puzzles should earn either game points. Putting complicated puzzles in a horror game never made sense to me. Having to think critically while under duress is just *not* fun; Rather like taking an exam! Playing as Heather feels so much better, like you said she's just a hugely more dynamic character. James is a bland cipher and I personally had no fun at all moving him around or unveiling his mawkish life. If I wanted to be a jerk, I'd say I really feel people who claim they actually prefer playing the 2nd are being a bit pretentious, or just don't like playing as female character. You're video game hipsters, so stop it guys!
Maybe I might heard you say it in your previous videos but on which PS3 backwards compatibility would you say the silent hill series will have a good video quality or do they both carry out the same quality for each console?
What? SH3 while being a good game can't possibly compare to SH2. Mainly because SH2 has one of the most beautiful and complex stories in any games and SH3 basically has no story.
@@serenseitcean2051 okay and this is mine and many others is there a problem with that? Did I curse the guy out and all that? Nobi just disagreed and that's okay.
