I saw the exact moment you realized that the reason he stopped loving her was because he died. Your face told the story and I immediately thought, "Aha! He gets it!". I'm glad you understood the symbolism of the wreath on the door. Also, in spite of that wreath on the door and "soon they'll carry him away " (pallbearers), "first time I've seen him smile in years" (undertakers usually put a slight smile on the face of the deceased), "I didn't see a tear" (no, because he's dead!), etc. etc. many reactors totally miss the fact that he died. The most bizarre reaction to this song I ever saw was the person who was grinning from ear to ear as he rejoiced in the fact that the man finally put her behind him and moved on to another relationship. NO NO NO NO NO! He said "I'll love you till I die" and he did just that. He loved her until he died. Country music is not primarily about the beat or the instruments or even the tune. It is about the story and those reactors who missed the story missed the whole point of the song! No wonder so many people don't like country music. THEY DON'T LISTEN! Great reaction! FYI, when they pitched this song to George he did not want to record it. He reportedly said, "It's too damn sad and no one will want to listen to it." He was slightly wrong because actually this turned out to be his biggest hit! Another Jones song that I would love to see you react to is 50,000 Names.

I remember seeing the special 100 greatest country music songs, they would announce the song, talk to the artist, talk to the songwriter talk to other artists who were influenced by that song. When it came to “He Stopped Loving Her Today” they cut to Maya Angelou (not exactly the first name when you think of country music) she said, “This song tells the story of unrequited love in less than four minutes better and more beautifully than some thousand page novels”. This was 10-15 years ago I have not heard anyone sum it up better than that.

George was my dad's favorite singer. I didn't appreciate him when I was young but I do now. I like some of his earlier songs which are more upbeat, like White Lightnin' and The Race is On. But he can tear your heart out with songs like this, as well as The Grand Tour and The Door.

George is such an amazing Country singer. One of the best ever. You should check out him singing "The Grand Tour". He loved Tammy Wynette,and never got over losing her. It was a true love/hate relationship. Tammy has a great catalog of her own iconic Country music. She and George are Country music royalty. George was notoriously known for getting drunk and not being able to perform. His nickname was "No Show Jones ", and was also known as "Possum " due to his small, close set eyes. I got to see him in person twice .He was completely wasted both times, but he DID show up! Bless him and may he RIP.

This was my Daddys song. Him and Momma was Married 23 Years then they divorced. He never remarried so when he passed in 2001 He stopped loving her. This song is very close to a trues story! George Jones is one of the greatest Country Legend! He was married to Country singer Tammy Wynette. They done several duets together! Their relationship was very tumultuous! He was a several alcoholic! That why they named him "No Show" Jones or possum. He would get to drunk & not show up to his own shows. He would tear up Hotels, fight with Tammy. She hung in there as long as she could, which is way longer than I would've!! She had a solo career too. Later on in life he finally married Nancy and Tammy died before George, but he still loved her til then!! You should try a song of his called If Drinking Don't Kill Me!!

I know a guy who is exactly as this song describes he has pictures of a woman that he has loved since high school and she basically told him that her friends were more important but he does not want to be with anybody else so he lives by himself has kept pictures and every text message, email and letter that she has given him, and he has said that he will never be with anybody else he will die alone, because he truly loves her. Even though deep down he knows she’s never coming back. He can’t let her go.

You should check out another side of George Jones. He had a good sense of humor as well. Back in the 50's he recorded a song written by his good friend, J.R. Richardson(aka The Big Bopper). The song is called White Lightning.

Good on you bloke. I can't tell you how many of these I've watched where people didn't get that he died. Sadly, they are mostly young minorities. Don't know why that is. I share your sentiments. I have seen a few dozen of these reaction pieces to this song and I shed a tear each time because the combination of the voice, the music and the lyrics are that powerfully moving. And because I've carried a torch for a woman I dated for a year who left town to go to college and met another. That was 1977. I drove her to the airport the day Elvis Presley died. I'll never forget it.

You should dive in to his enormous catalogue of songs spanning 60 years. He was nick named The Possum. And he was also called The Rolls-Royce of Country Music. Even a certain Sinatra said he had the second best voice in the world... He struggled a lot with booze and cocain, but eventually shook the habits. He was certainly one of the ultimatum bests. Sadly we lost him in 2013. RIP, Possum. Never to be forgotten!
