🇹🇭 Thailand or Vietnam 🇻🇳 ONE OF A KIND NOODLES + Thai Viet Street Food in Bangkok's little Vietnam

I'm back in Bangkok after a few days of eating my way around Saigon so I thought there's no better time to search for some Thai - Vietnamese street food in Bangkok.
Today I'm heading to Baan Yuan or Vietnamese Village to eat a super rare version of Guay Jub Yuan with fish instead of pork. I have never seen these 'Vietnamese' noodles with fish anywhere and to make them even more unique, they come in chicken stock, not pork stock. This is Thailand's answer to Bánh Canh in Vietnam.
I also managed to pick up some Pak Mor (Bánh cuốn), some Bánh Beo (steamed rice cake) and some Bun Be which are kanom jeen with pork.
All in all the dishes were fantastic with nothing coming in over 60 baht - £1.40 - $1.75
Get here EARLY though. I'm talking 6.30 AM and latest 8.30 AM to see the full market.

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this RU-vid channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I heard of a Vietnamese community in Bangkok, but haven't seen any vloggers showing it. I am glad you paid a visit to Saigon, where I am from, but I relocated to London.

The Vietnamese have lived in Thailand since the Ayutthaya days in the 17th century after fleeing religious persecution in their country. There are records of a Vietnamese community in the foreign quarter in Ayutthaya .In 1834 the Immaculate Conception Church was rebuilt to cater for the increasing Vietnamese population in the area. Locally the church was called Bot Ban Yuan (Vietnamese village church) In 1851, King Rama IV or King Mongkut granted land to Catholic Church to built St Francis Xavier Church which has become the center of the community in the area.

Looking forward how you prepare all those ingredients, Gary. Vietnamese food is not easy to prepare and get right. It takes a lot of having the right ingredients and just the right amount of it to get it dialed in. Vietnamese dipping fish sauce, 1 part of good quality fish sauce, 1 part of lemon or lime, 1 part sugar and 1 part water.( exact amounts) Add chilies, garlic as you like it. That's my recipe and it works every time.

Bún Bì & Bún Thịt Nướng go with some of dressing sauce (fish sauce mixed with vinegar, sugar, spice, garlic & shredded carrot, the same as dipping sauce for Chả Giò (known as Nem in Nth VN), but instead of dipping, you douse it all over the dish). 32% VNmese dishes is about broths, dressing, dipping sauces. 32% is about the texture & 32% is the secret of marinating. Together, this 96% makes or breaks the name of the dish. All shall be fresh. Why the VNmse dishes are so fresh? because under VNmese sun everything would be rotten in 3 hrs or 4 without the refrigeration. There was no electricity in most parts of the country in the early 1960s, let alone household refrigerators or commercial freezers. We didn't have refrigerators until the invasion of the American G.Is in early 1960s. Whitegoods were considered as luxury back then. & as some G.I wrote in his diary to this effect: "In this hot & damped tropical climate, everything is rotten. The first 2b rotten is human flesh" (since his body was not climatised then to VN tropical climate. Should I mention mozzies, ticks, leeches, ... all welcomed the G.Is in VN back then).

Nice, Gary. I really like the Thai version of Viet dishes......a bit more umami and chilis to kick it up. Good to hear that you're getting into the written language....I never applied myself enough (as a former language major) to get it, but went with the the various oral tones. I searched online for some of the Thai domestic chili pastes, sauces and other ingredients, but most of the reviews said that they were still export versions for the US palate. I hope when you start that home cooking series, you share some of the links to ordering from over here. I still will probably only approximate the dishes, but at least it'll be a start.

Gary, since you like noodles a lot, perhaps you should go to Penang. There are noodles being cooked by Chinese, Indians and Malay. There are the prawn noodle soup - very popular with Malaysians and Singaporeans; the char kway teow, a fried version, slightly wet cooked with chicken egg or duck egg for more oomph. The Indians are not shabby too - they have the mak mak goreng and the Malays have their version of soup noodles too - mee bakso ( beef ball with noodle originally from Indonesia ) mee soto ( shredded chicken in broth). After eating these noodles Pasta is just ordinary . Don't get me wrong I like pasta too. Sorry advance to Italians food lovers.

You've made me really want to eat Vietnamese foods. Lol It's hard to find a special food youtuber like you in Thailand you really know deep about food. The wet chili are always spicier than the dry one, most Thai people called the wet one "Tum-Aeng" means made it themself or homemade because most of the wet one usually made by the restaurant, but nowadays there are a lot of people selling those kinds of homemade chili too. I'm not sure they cooked it with oil or not but they did cooked something with it to make it wet like that. It is slightly different from "Prik-Ga-reang"(Karen's Chili) which is another type of chili, the skin of karen's chili is very not smooth like normal chili, Yes it looks really similar when already finished.

as I am Thai food from around the world if it's not spicy I won't eat it Because I've been eating Thai food since birth and I'm familiar with these flavors, and when I go abroad I wasn't familiar with those foods, and I thought, why would people around the world eat so much bland food? and when I consider myself So I understood myself I can't live anywhere in the world for sure. 'Cause I'm addicted to spicy food

@@theroamingcook I'm not a very serious person. But eating spicy food is a habit. It made it difficult to go back to bland food. And I've never been sick from eating spicy food. I am 40+ now. I am still in good health. no underlying disease because besides the spicy food that I have eaten I also eat a lot of herbs. and exercise All food is balanced if eaten in the right amount.

Not sure why you ordered a Thai tea in the video promoting the Vietnamese street market. More appropriate would've been a Viet iced coffee.

It is so so nothing special. Actually you missed a nice restaurant in that area. It is hard to find though. Speciality is banh hoi. Go inside the alley with the coca cola or Pepsi symbol. Then turn right when you see another alley with the sign to sell orange juice

khanom Jin noodles style in Thailand is adopted from Mon, not Vietnamese.
@theroamingcook
@theroamingcook 2 года назад
Yes but this is a Vietnamese dish. Maybe the Viet dish came from Mon as well?
@mtha7796
@mtha7796 2 года назад
@@theroamingcook I mean only Khanom Jin noodle in Thailand was adopted from Mon to eat with our fish soup + Thai curries. Bun Cha is new Vietnamese dish to Thai people who've never been to Vietnam. Most of Vietnamese restaurants in Thailand, especially in Isan have never served this dish. This is what I clarify because you said in the video you not sure whether Khanom Jin in Thailand was from Vietnam.

For me the Vietnamese food in Thailand is not as good as the original Vietnamese food in Vietnam For example , the Vietnamese Banh Canh , Banh Cuon and Bun Bi look and taste better in Vietnam than in Thailand . For me it`s normal because those Viet-Thai people have left their fatherland for soo long that they no longer have the same taste than we have in Vietnam . I bet you that they can`t even speak Vietnamese correctly . FYI there were 3 waves of Vietnamese immigration in Thailand . The first one started during the 17th century , under the Trinh`s government ( The Trinh lords were like the Shoguns in Japan at that time . They were called the Mayor of the Palace ( Chua Trinh in Vietnamese) . They were like the British Prime Minister who really ruled the country . The kings Lê just had only a honorific tittle like all the kings and queens currently in Europe , Japan and Thailand The Trinh`s administration was hereditary in the family like the monarchy . Those immigrants left VN because they were Catholic and the Trinh lords back then didn`t like the Catholics . The second wave of immigration occurred during the 19th century and the third one happened after 1975 with the wave of refugees from South VN .

It’s the same as anywhere I guess, generally the taste has been changed to suit local palates. I think you’d be surprised, a few people here speak Vietnamese. The name Baan Yuan (Vietnamese in Thai) comes from the surname Nguyễn I believe. Does that sound right?
@hungcuongnguyen293
@hungcuongnguyen293 2 года назад
@@theroamingcook Perhaps they can still speak a little bit of Vietnamese , but not fluently . The word Yuan means Viet in Thai . It`s not related at all to the surname Nguyên . The Chinese call Vietnam , Yue Nan

For my experience and my taste I like Vietnam foods in Thailand more than the original in Vietnam. I am Thai , it's more tasty and more spicy, I used to visit Vietnam in 2019, I stay there just 5 days with 2 cities, almost are similar taste, and make me want to eat more tasty. I arrived Thailand at night and I went to Isaan restaurant by immediately😅, and all friends in our group are the same, but different restaurants. Isaan restaurant, not Vietnam restaurant, just only Thai people did the same thing when back to Thailand, and we sent our photo for the isaan foods to our group trip, nobody told but do the same thing 😅 . You may try Vietnam foods in Thailand. (It's so good for me, I like it more than in Vietnam, before I go to Vietnam, I high hope and expect the original must more yummy but after the short days I think I love Vietnam foods in Thailand, I think some menu are not different , but some menu get develop and suit for Thai.
