Today was my first day in Saigon, Vietnam in 3 years and I definitely made up for lost time! I headed out on the ultimate Vietnamese noodle tour of Ho Chi Minh City with no other than ‪@Macoi24‬ This was Vietnamese Street Food at its finest!
We started with Bún riêu for 25k (37.5 THB - £0.85 - $1/08)
Next we headed for Bún Thịt Nướng for 65K (95 THB - £2.20 / @2.80)
Lastly, we had Banh Canh Cua for 95K (140 THB - £3.25 - $4.10)
Directions to everywhere we went:

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this RU-vid channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

Love your Thai street food content. I am a Vietnamese American living in Thailand the last 17 years so I was looking forward to your Saigon street food. I understand why you compare it to Thai food, but I believe it cheapens the experience and the food. When you talk about Thai food, you speak to it for what it is without comparison to other cuisine, which makes it enjoyable. Vietnamese food is amazing and is worthy to be critiqued on its on without having to be compared to other cuisine. Keep the content coming Gary!
@theroamingcook
@theroamingcook 2 года назад
Yeah I get that completely Tuan. Hopefully you’ll like my other three videos more, once I’d warmed up a bit. 50 percent of my audience are Thai so I’m just letting them know a little history of where they’re food comes from (like with the banh canh) and also that they can definitely enjoy Vietnamese food when they come here. Of course Vietnamese food deserves to be critiqued on its own but I’d literally just got off the plane and started filming so I definitely didn’t want to pretend to be an expert. I said Vietnam do better soups than Thailand so I’d anything, my Thai viewers should be annoyed 😂 I definitely wasn’t trying to offend anyone Tuan 🙏
@phenomatuan
@phenomatuan 2 года назад
@@theroamingcook people can get worked up when you talk about politics, religion, sports and FOOD, 555. No offense taken as there is a shared appreciation for thought and dedication that people put in to creating delicious Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, thus why we choose to live in this region. I also appreciate that both you and Max have taken the time to learn the language to better connect with locals. Keep the content coming!

I live off the grid in the US and feel alive and comfy when I am out of the built Western world. It's so delightful to run into kindred spirits like you on RU-vid. It's not my preferred way to meet people, but there is a thread that must run through us all. I'm looking to find a new career path. I'd love to live my next years to continue traveling, but I have to say, it's been a a great ride to live in the mountains and woods here as a field biologist in the wilderness while also getting to see the world through professional conferences. Last year was Costa Rica and before then was Brussels through Iceland (campervan), but honestly, visiting the outer banks of the US would probably more exotic. That's where the next meeting is.

the Bun Thit Nuong place is my favourite too!!, used to work just around the corner, a little pricier than your usual BTN but the quality of the spring roll ( which on its own is 30k each! ) will be what you would usually pay for a BTN in most districts outside of d1 on its own, haha, but that and the beautifully grilled meat makes up for it, definitely get what you pay for 👍

BUN RIEU (Boon Real) is originally from the north and not eaten with blood cake. To me I cant eat it.. and dont understand why ppl like to add it to many noodles. But love the fried tofu and Gio tai (meat cake).. cooked with DAM BONG (a by product from the process of making vinegar)(northern style) (the flavor is incredible). Btw you promounced Mam Tom so well.

How can you go back to bangers and mash after that?! Lol Those dishes looked delicious but I already know they are. I've been able to eat a lot of Vietnamese food in Australia as I grew up here with my family. I am so glad you enjoyed those meals! X

Usually vietnamese spring rolls contain khoai Mo^n (taro) and cu sa('n (jacema) which you've forgot to mention. These ingredients set vietnamese spring rolls apart from chinese.
@theroamingcook

I mentioned cassava instead of jicama as that’s what I thought it was but thanks for correcting me. Viet spring rolls are the best!

Hi Gary, great video as usual. Food looks wonderful! I've spent some time in Hanoi but never HCMC, I'll have to visit soon. In the third bowl you seem to suggest that Udon noodles come from Udon Thani; I don't think that's right, I think the name is just a coincidence. Wherever they're from, they're delicious!
@theroamingcook
@theroamingcook 2 года назад
Thank Will mate! Sorry for the confusion, I’ll clarify 😅 I meant that the banh canh noodles, which we call guay jub yuan and lao call khao piak sen, came into Thailand via Udon Thani or actually Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom , Ubon Ratchatani etc. in the Isan region along the Mekong. Udon noodles are made from wheat, these are rice and tapioca. Sorry I was a bit overwhelmed with the new flavours on the video and not making much sense 😂

Thank you for your doing about everything in Vietnam🇻🇳✌. If you wanna make a long story in Vietnam, I think you should do like I showed Max when him make clip that add Vietnamese sub in your clip! Ask Max for Vietnamese translator!

Thank you so much! I will try to add proper sub soon. For now I had to use Google translate so I hope it’s not too bad 😭

After my 2nd time rewatch it, I’ve got the idea. THE ROAMING COOK NETWORK. 😍🥰 TRCN is the “real, authentic food expert of each country.” Gary is TRC THAILAND. Max is TRC VIETNAM. And so on on PH, Malaysia, Singapore, Morocco etc. And when tourists need to try the real authentic food in Thailand they must find Gary and when they keep on to Vietnam, Gary refer them to Max. 🥰🥰😇😇⚡️ This can be the GLOBAL NETWORKING. Make the true food experts who have the truest love of the native food join force together. And when the network grows you all produce the food show together on BBC channel. 😆😆
@theroamingcook
@theroamingcook 2 года назад
That’s what I’m going for Jo so I’m glad you saw it 😀 I don’t want to pretend to be an expert when I have an actual expert in that country that can show me their favourites 😀
