Dunno if anyone else has brought this up yet, but Gameline was basically a direct ancestor of AOL. Long story short, the same guy (or at least one of them?) who was responsible for the idea went and created something similar in Quantum Link for the C64 which was a very early online service, and eventually became America Online.

Yep, and there was even a version of Q-Link for the C128 as well. Q-Link came packed in with GEOS, and GEOS 128 which was a fantastic Mac like OS for the C64/C128. I had a C128 with dual 1571 disk drives, a 2400 Baud Commodore modem, and was a Q-Link user till around early 93 when I finally move to a used 486 66Mhz PC running Win 3.11. I only had one local number for Q-Link my area, and I could only use the service at night since my house only had one line(had a phone in my bedroom though), but it was fantastic being able to chat with people all over the country for an hour, or 2 a day, along with having early forms of email.

Came here to say this. Almost everyone form CVC went on to the new venture with Quantum, and they built on the existing GameLine infrastructure. I was happy to see it mentioned in this video, though a tad disappointed it wasn't contextualized. It's one of the most important niche failures of early networking technology.

There are still more forgotten services to mention, from the Intellivision PlayCable service to the Famicom's own online service. Also, there was the Catapult X-Band modem, released for both the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. Of course, I doubt any of these saw service in the UK. Great Part 1 video, though!

I'm surprised TEN (Total Entertainment Network) didn't make the list. There were some notable pre-steam strategy games that had the service quasi-baked into them (Like Master of Orion II). I remember springing for it, but there was hardly anyone using it.

and they sold some network specific ssi games dark sun and panzer general were the two I owned I had just gotten the hang of darksuns when I got the message they were going out and a bit later I got an e-mail from sega inviting me to heat which was built on ten network

Great episode, Larry! By the way, the SEGA Mega Drive was (and in a way, still is) very successful in Brazil, thus becoming very interesting for Tectoy (SEGA's official representatives in Brazil) to bring to the country lots of stuff related to the console. The Online Banking, for example! In 1995, some years after it was shut down in Japan, Tectoy launched the TeleBradesco, a modified version of the Anser service tailored for the Bradesco private bank. It was astonishing for its time and it worked well, but of course didn't have that much success, since videogames were mostly considered as toys. Nonetheless, many collectors still keep that cartridge as a memento of that time.

There was also that Phantom console by Infinium Labs that was supposed to come out in 2004 that proudly bragged about having a download-only model, which at the time sounded insane, but it never ended up happening and IL ended up releasing a keyboard and mouse instead, the keyboard got good reviews but mouse was pretty crap.

So far, I have only found 2 or three that passed; it matters if you count one that used a non-distinct accent or not. Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell, and whoever it was that played "The Governor" in the walking dead. (I know the first 2 are actually Irish... well, Northern Irish and Irish respectively. But that is how bad their American accents are from what I have found, that I expanded to include the whole of the UK.)

You know... that Sega office add-on was pretty brilliant of an idea. I remember back then my parents bought a 286 office PC for a whopping $4,000 (back when cars were $7,000-$10,000). If they advertised it right, it could have made it extremely popular for home-office usage. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the program so I don't know whether this would be effective are not, but I can't help us think this was a brilliant idea had they nailed the implementation.

@@chuku81 That keyboard was awesome! I remember being blown away when I’d chat with another player who had one. Probably worth quite a bit these days. I’d make an offer if I weren’t actively being forced to downsize my collection after the house was ruined in an EF-4 tornado. :(

I'd imagine the GameLine had another "hidden" cost: the obscene cost of dial-up connections, lest you resorted to phreaking and used toll-free numbers to trick the system.
