The patterning of this dress was pretty simple. I tried a few construction methods, easy and hard, and the method you choose (if you want to make anything similar) will depend on your fabric weight and the overall fit you want the final garment to have.

I think it's great that you show where you mess up. A lot of us get discouraged when we see nothing but the picture-perfect end result and think "Why can't I be like that?" Not knowing we actually ARE like that, but we just don't see the mistakes on camera. Thanks for being genuine and showing what it's like to get frustrated but not give up.

Your command of striping is stellar. The diagonal stripes down the center is the bomb. It makes the dress in my opinion. I recently fell in love with a blue stripe cotton challis and was looking for an excuse to buy a few yards. So thank you!

Wow you’re dress is lovely. Thank you for leaving in the redo! Even though we all know that no one gets things perfect all the time it’s nice to have a reminder! Besides I find I learn something every time this happens to me. Sometimes it’s a complicated learning sometimes it a reinforcement that I shouldn’t sew complicated things late into the night!

A lovely dress, well made👍🏼 and you did the right thing with the rooster. It showed dominance agression, to 'protect his territory and chicks... and by picking him up, you showed him who's boss... I'd walk around for at least 20/30 min with him like that, myself. Feed it yummy grub treats or something, and he'll be alright sooner, rather than later.

Gorgeous! A well-fitted dress is always super flattering, and you look amazing in it! You see fit issues that honestly I did not see at all when you showed off the dress. Recognizing fit issues that you want to improve techniques for in future garments is fine. But this dress is fantastic as it is, and I expect you could wear it with pride for many years to come!

First: I identify SOOOO deeply with hand stitching shoulder seams to ensure the lines match up perfectly. (It just makes the brain and eyes calm and happy.) Being meticulous in our sewing creates such a lovely garment and even though it’s exhausting while you’re working, the pride when you wear it it so empowering 🥰 Second: I love my chickens too! I will often stop and check on them when I need a brain break. Third: How have I never found you on RU-vid before? You have a new subscriber friend!

20:40 the button placket needs the interfacing specially because it was cut in an angle.. Lovely dress and all the working process. I understand the struggle. I'm a little bit of perfectionist too. I don't like my garments to look like handmade. learned a lot from you. I enjoyed the whole video, I was in need of motivation to start sewing. Sorry my English,

In English, you don't want your garments to look "homemade," which is that very basic, somewhat sloppy, beginner look with no neat finishes. Handmade is actually what you would strive for, as that means a more neat construction and designer finishing. Such similar words, but with opposite meanings in the sewing/making world!

Mariah, can I just say that your videos are what inspired me to start sewing? Even though I'm a beginner and can't follow a lot of what you're doing, there's something about way you show your whole creative process, the different ideas, the planning, the experiments, the mistakes and problem solving, the results and how you feel about them, that made me really excited about sewing! It feels like this big journey of discovery that's rewarding even when things don't turn out exactly how you planned.

Thanks for showing us the exciting "fun" parts, it's nice seeing people with vastly more experience and knowledge still don't always get it right the first time, and showing us how you fix it teaches us more than showing how to do it correctly from the start.... and also I love how you force-cuddle the rooster to make him leave you alone, my bunny responds the same way!

omg I had the same problems with the bodice being too tight and I did the thing with moving of the dart too! Maybe I wasn't doing as terrible of a job as I thought I was

That stripe matching is just👌chef's kiss. You know, you could dye those plastic buttons. You'd need to account for the yellowing in regards to color of course. I'm guessing the plastic is acrylic, so you may need a specific dye for artificial fabrics. maybe some really strong coffee could shift them more tan than yellow?

Ohhh...yeah. Been there done that 😆. Sometimes the sewing gods just aren't on your side. Thanks for sharing your failed attempts - it's as much of a learning opportunity as watching a successful attempt, imo. And far more entertaining 😉 The end result is very pretty though. I do love sleeveless dresses with wide skirts. I find them very flattering and comfortable and it's always easy, to throw it on a cardigan or something for warmth. Put on thights and boots and you can wear them till winter. So versatile.

I've been wanting to make myself a wrap dress, but I'm taking forever to get my head wrapped around the construction of a basic bodice block. I found a tutorial by Chris Sartorial just yesterday and it finally makes sense! He also explains some of the fit issues and how they should be fixed. Super helpful! Hopefully I can mash up his bodice with your wrap pieces and finally have a wrap dress that actually covers the cleavage!

I love watching your videos! I've been sewing clothing for about 55 years but always did just the basic patterns. They have changed the way they do those and now the facings don't come out very nice. It's so nice to see you doing them the right way. Love all your handwork. Very nice!

Was fun to watch and I can emphasize with pushing skill and redoing things. I learned much of my sewing by screwing up on epic proportions and tossing stuff into the trash. Then later I would try again from new. In attempting what is new to me, I end up buying twice the needed amount of fabric. I normally make my lined bodices like you originally tried to. It takes a while but I've since learned to do pipped edges too. Most tell me that my sewing is a monument to anal retentive behavior.

A long time ago I made a beige seersucker dress that was similar and loved it. Can't stop thinking about it every summer. Maybe I need to sew another wrap seersucker stripe dress but this time I think I prefer blue or pink!

I’m almost done with mine, thanks to your video. I have a white-gray striped fabric that I bought from a deadstock merchant in Belgium. I cut the stripes in the fronts like the picture shows it, I also staystitched both layers. I still have to work on my gathers but I think it’s ok like so. I now have the dreaded buttonholes to make and I’m afraid I’ll ruin the dress because my buttonhole foot just keeps 🔩 with me. 😅 Thanks for the video!

I love wrap dresses and, yeah, without fail I always need to take out that 1/4" - 3/8" on the wrap neckline. So now I just do that in the pattern drafting stage. You drafted it out perfectly. The Closet Historian also has a wrap top video that illustrates how to pattern out the neckline dart really clearly. I really appreciate that French Seamed pocket. I'm going to try it that way the next time I make a skirt. Your dress turned out beautifully!

Omg i struggled so much with that gapping last week when I was making my wedding dress !!! I don’t know how many mock-ups I did and finally found out that indeed, since the front panel doesn’t lay away from the deep of the breast like in regular dresses, but against it, you can’t just flat pattern easy from your block, you indeed need to have the waist go up in order to pull down that neck line inside the deep of the breast !!! Thanks for explaining those darts, because it still was unclear ❤️

Thank you for showing the "failed dress" as well! It's so reassuring and inspiring to see that not every project is perfect from the start, but that with perseverance, you can make something your happy with (even if you still pointed out some flaws that only you can see at the end). For the fit, have you looked into contouring for darts? It might explain why making the neckline much deeper seems to have added space to the top

Love the idea of the foam in the nesting boxes for the eggs, also, if you hang the water containers a couple of inches above the ground, the chickens/turkeys will not be able to dirty the water so easily.

Another small bit of bodice pattern advice I have would be to do a mockup if you're raising or lowering the neckline very much. I tend to always get gaping when I lower a neckline, I think just because it needs to lay flatter against the top of the chest, as opposed to a high neckline, where the fabric sort of floats above (depending on how your shaped I guess)

I think the dress looks good, strips look good on some but defiantly not me😹😹I remember making something like the dress at collage but used a heavier fabric as I wanted it for the winter days here in Australia. Best rule of thumb when making these types of changes always, always make a mock-up out of old bed sheets this way you can work out all of the fitting issues out before cutting into your design fabric. Other than that great tutorial 🤗🤗🤗

Do you feed oyster shells? Lack of calcium can cause thin, breakable egg shells.

yes they have oyster shells. I did get some mixed scratch grains recently too. I was told that some birds simply don't like oyster shells and so a mixed supplement lets them choose.

The end result came out so satisfying, I love facings like that. Really interesting to see the failed version, too, and how the final look of a garment depends not only on what the fabric looks like, but the weight and drape, and how you can boost with a bit of interfacing and different sewing techniques. I'd be interested to see your tweaks to the bodice block, I'm still tweaking mine, too - it doesn't help that my body keeps changing whoops XD
