I want to add more plants to my aquariums but don't have cuttings. I can't believe the prices of terrestrial plants at stores lately!! Guess I'm going to have to make friends with plant prople or take a pair of scissors to Lowe's ✂️😎🌱😊

It would be nice to know the source of the slick for future reference. I have some bamboo growing in the top of a goldfish tank. The growth is amazing! Thanks for the update.

Andrew thank you. Everytime I wonder something about an aquarium plant you have a video that covers it

You could use a fluval/Marina breeding box to extend planting outside the tank if, like me, you forget to water it. It is air driven and works like a hob drawing water through the box so the plants constantly have fresh water without crowding the tank

Thanks for that recommendation! Sounds like a good idea

Biofilm is the carbohydrates and lipids from organic waste produced in a planted tank. The 'film' is produced by bacteria feeding on the excess organic waste present in the water - and that organic waste can come from livestock and plant life in the tank. Biofilm can give that rainbow sheen

Yes, I’m familiar with bio film and this was more likely petroleum residue.

Awesome video and presentation of subject matter. More people need to subscribe. I can see a similar setup like this in my living room as a conversation center piece!

Hello Andrew. Hope all is well. I have to ask your opinion on how can I keep algae from growing on my glass top because of my aeration .
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject Год назад
One way is to keep the water from splashing up on the tank lid. A plastic lid of some sort with a hole in the middle and the air line going through floating at water level will help

Is it possible to get more information or to be directed to a video about the use of hydrogen peroxide as an algicide in aquariums? Also, I did add a few pothos cuttings to my brackish water tank. Specific gravity is only 1.003 at this time but will gradually increase over the next few months. Thus far the pothos seem to be doing okay and even are putting on new growth. Java ferns in the tank are also doing well and I might make a couple of those start to grow emergent to add more air exposed plants. Saying all this in a hopes to get you to work towards doing a few brackish water setups with video.

I use 5-10ml of peroxide per gallon of tank water. After a few days, siphon off the dead algae and do a partial water change, 20% or so.

How much lighting you put on your lucky bamboo
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject 2 года назад
This lucky bamboo gets indirect sunlight in the morning and shade in the afternoon. I don’t have a lamp for them at this time. If I did use artificial lights, It would probably need 6-8 hours per day.

How did you get algae if you have plants? I thought large plants suck all the nutrients from the water leading to death or prohibiting algae growth?
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject 2 года назад
The algae happened for a few reasons. This tank was moved to my greenhouse where it received a lot of sunlight making algae more likely to grow. Also the lucky bamboo roots are mostly growing in the substrate and not the water column. If the roots were out of the substrate it would be feeding from the water, however, lucky bamboo is not as effective at removing nutrients from the water column as Pothos or peace lily, in my experience. I believe I mentioned in the video that I blocked out the sunlight by covering the sides of the tank and added the floating plants and this got the algae under control. Since this video, I have left the tank where It is shown in the video , where it is shaded and haven’t had the algae any more.

I like your sincerity and I share your admiration for plants, however I am more about fish in my tanks so I got a feeling your ripariums are less hospitable to fish when you're getting such outbursts of cyanobacteria and algae. Maybe I should stick with pure aquatic plants such as anubius, brasilian sword and java fern. Introducing terrestrial planted plants seems to carry risks of chemicals and unknown factors that can harm my fish ..

Each tank is different and can present it’s own challenges whether you’re growing riparian plants or not. My goal is to document the development of these tanks, share what’s working and what is not, try to identify problems (like excessive sunlight causing excessive algae as was the case for this tank) and find a solution. And with each tank that I setup, I try to apply the lessons learned from the previous one. Not all fish keepers will want Ripariums and that’s fine. If aquarium plants plants are doing it for you, go with it. I’ve been growing a wide variety of houseplants in my tanks for a while now and keeping fish in them with success, I wouldn’t keep doing it if it was problematic.

@@plantlifeproject yea, but let's be honest.. the most I have ever seen in your tanks are rasboras, guppies and similar nano-fish. I got few nano tanks but I also have big tanks with electric blue acaras, parrot fish , angel fish and alike all bigger than 5 inches. In your tanks fish are more decorations to plants, or source of food for them. In mine they are PETS with individual NAMES and are MORE important to me than any plant I might have inside. I think that's the big difference

@optionmaster221 Год назад
the point is I'm NOT going to jeopardize the health of my pets by placing a number of plants from my local nursery into my tanks as NOBODY (from the nursery I talked to) can guarantee me they weren't treated with some chemicals that will harm my fish e.g. herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, artificial or natural fertilizers etc. Once that plant hits the market all you know about it is its Latin Name and how to further grow it. Info tag offers NO clues as to what or how it was grown.
