Its probably ducks and rice that compliment eachother the best. Ducks eat both the weeds and the snails that eat rice plants, and their eggs are very delicious on that diet while their poop fertilizes the rice field for higher yields. For meat, moscovy ducks are worth a lot.

Permaculture and natural farming is the way to go. I knew there was a food shortage and increasing food price on it's way 20 years ago. That's why I did what I did with the farm we bought. If you want to avoid pest as much as possible, plant the same kind of trees at least 10 meters away from each other with other trees and plants between. The bigger the variety of trees or other plants you have on the farm mixed together, the more kind of bugs you get there. And then the bugs will keep each other in check. And you will avoid that 1 bug destroy all the trees as they will if you plant only 1 kind of trees on an traditional orchard. You will always loose some of your trees depending of the quality of the soil. And since the "soil" in most Isaan farms are basically a mix of sand and clay, you will need a heck of a lot of compost, leafs from the trees and "chop and drop" from Moringa trees to make real soil again. That can easily take a 5+ years to achieve. So good luck with your new approach to your farming! 😊
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand Год назад
Thanks Svein. That's the plan. Unfortunately very little of the Moringa thrives in our clay soil... I'm researching on how to augment the soil to its liking...

Hi Both, great to see you well and maybe with renewed enthusiasm for your project. It's exciting to witness how ideas are evolving through your experiences - 2 years already!! We are planning to return towards the end of the year for an extended stay/or permanently. All the micro life details you mention are what I'm missing, as well as the weather and atmosphere of Isan. You've got to sort that fish pond! All best eric & bee xx

Pawpaw trees are fickle. We tried to plant them for years but never got any fruit, so we stopped. Then a year or so later up pops pawpaw trees. We have four trees that have over 30 fruit each and more trees are starting to produce everyday. All of them volunteers.

I have a story for you. There's a farmer who went to collect his palm juice. While he's on top of a palm tree collecting his juice, he is thinking about what he's going to do with his money from selling his juice. He said he's going to buy a few chicken. They then will have a lot more chickens. He would sell and save money and buy a couple of cows. They, too, will be more cows. He would sell them and make a lot of money. Now he has a lot of money and can afford to hire a mate. If the made doesn't do what he wanted, he would kick her. As soon as he said that, he actually lost his grip. He fell off the palm tree and broke a couple b I nes.

@MrAas666

Legumes, at least 3 around every fuit tree.
@EscapetoThailand
@EscapetoThailand Год назад
And let them climb up the fruit trees or keep chopping them for mulch?
@MrAas666
@MrAas666 Год назад
@@EscapetoThailand Not sure about let them climbing up the fruit trees. Depends on the tree I guess, certainly not a good idead to let some beans climb up a Durian tree :D Excuse my short comment, I meant legume trees around your fruit trees. There are so many different families like Leucaena, Acacia, Mimosa etc. Many of them you will see on abandoned, degraded land or just on the roadside. Most of them grow really fast and you can chop and drop them multiple times per year. Also great for giving some shade or as a windreak. Some of the legume trees have really deep roots, able to create pathways in compacted soil. Others have beautiful flowers or even provide you with food. All of them need little to no care besides chopping them. The fruit trees won't need more water in the dry season when surrounded by leguminous trees. You might also look pinto peanut up, annother legume but a ground cover. Grows well at my place ( Northern Thailand) and spreads out. We had a really, really hard and dissapointing time in the beginning, now the soil is improving slowly but steadily and some parts of the farm look really 'wild' but are thriving. Thank you for sharing your 'journey' and creating great content 👍🏻.

Agree. Just bought a beautiful piece of property here in Vietnam (and Vietnam property isn’t cheap) after several years. Looking forward to the next step in the wife and my evolution which is land and having a home built and home ownership. Travel is getting tiresome - we had a horrible experience via Malaysias airport and it’s also gotten too expensive for my only 5 star resort tastes. We want to settle down and garden and enjoy our soon home and beautiful rice field and mountain views out in the countryside where it’s less busy, noisy and crowded. BTW, normal maybe 150 meter garden. What you’re doing at your age is way too much JC.
