Not the brassica update I wanted to give you but this is real life in the garden :( On the other hand, Did you see those strawberry plants? I love them! if you have any advice on growing strawberries please leave them in the comments!
This year I am growing a LOT of strawberries, I have zero experience growing them in any shape or form but so far they seem to be doing amazing! The roots I purchased locally are quick to grow indoors ( a little bit of warm and some light will do!) and I am currently getting them used to the outdoors.

We have deer, bunnies and groundhogs here…..I get tired of fighting them! I need a fence or enclosed place that they can’t get into…..convincing my husband is another problem……I have my GreenStalks on my deck…..and a lot of pots for tomatoes, etc…..but I need a fenced in area to keep birds and all the other stinkers out! I’m working on it daily…..I’ll get him on my side yet! Great video! Thank you!❤❤❤

The tree squirrels are my biggest problem for my garden. They see every edible plant as a feast I have laid out for them. I tried peppermint, hot pepper sprays and more but nothing really worked ... I now cover my tender greens with netting cloth and also cover peppers and tomatoes as soon as they start fruiting. The cloth lets sunshine in but keeps the critters out.

The white cabbage butterflies lay their eggs on brassicas. The caterpillers hatch and decimate the plants. The only way i was able to grow brocalli is by putting insect netting over them.

I wouldn’t grow brassicas without netting anymore-it’s an absolute must! Otherwise it is nearly impossible to clean broccoli and Brussels.

I found slugs and aphids on my lettuce today. I'm gonna try the predatory mites for leaf hoppers and white flies. The leaf hoppers are so bad here, and the white flies are taking out my landscape shrubs! The squirrels love to take one bite of my tomatoes and throw them away. It's always something. AND I have a fence!

Have you thought of birds? I caught mine in the act! During breeding season I guess fresh greens are very tempting. I bird net all seedlings until they get some good sturdy growth. No bird ever harmed or got stuck. Way too smart

The fact that they left everything higher untouched is weird. Birds would not be worrying about going for the bottom tier of my Greenstalk only… would they?

Sorry the bunnies or whatever got your brassicas. Mr Hubby and I just spend 3 weekends bunny proofing our entire yard because last year all my plants were annihilated. Very frustrating. Did you have that many nice replacements under your grow lights? Or did you have to go buy some plants?

Last year we had realized why we didn’t have any lettuce or peas-the baby rabbits can fit through 2x4” wire fence so now we added poultry wire to the bottom. It never ends. Had a first ever in my life voles last year. And I think squirrels moved in and if they are eating bulbs they won’t be for long.

Will your strawberries live over in the green stalks in your area? I planted some in a cheaper version but they all died out -- I am in Zone 4b/5a but we get little snow and lots of cold.
@SoilandMargaritas
@SoilandMargaritas 3 месяца назад
Apparently in my zone they do come back, I guess all it takes is a couple of really bad days during the winter... I might bring them in my unheated garage but that is still far away ;)

I garden in Zone 6. Last spring I dug out some strawberry plants from my raised garden bed and planted them in Greenstalk containers because something was eating up all the strawberries. I moved the containers into my unheated garage for the winter and watered them occasionally. I just cleaned up the dead leaves and will be moving them out soon.

That’s a problem I’ve noticed year after year with Menards is changing what they carry. I also noticed a huge difference in pricing in the specialty lines of Promix. I noticed online it was way cheaper in MI, but most did not ship and if they did it would be costly. I was able to find the BX locally because I am very unhappy with all the others available and wanted to see the difference. I do love the BX. I will probably mix my own going forward. The other brands mold, too much compost, sticks and garbage like plastic and cigar tips. The seedlings just look sick. And I bought that natural expensive brand with all the crap from wherever in it and it is really crappy. The house plants don’t even like it. Lamberts is what Veggie Boys uses. I did spot the large white bale of Lamberts at small hardware last weekend. I think we are getting the shaft in the world of potting soils. Looks like you are getting storms tonight and hope they aren’t wicked. Wow, you are a lot warmer than 5a, WI. I’m hoping to put a low tunnel up for brassicas, but tomorrow we are getting 3-6” they say. We need the moisture but not this cold. The winter months were warmer than the last two weeks. I think next Monday we will get 60s again but the nights here take forever to warm up. If it a clean cut it was a rabbit. Torn could be deer or birds. Not sure about squirrels. If you were in CA I would say rats as it seems they have a huge problem with them. Those robins can sometimes do damage.
@SoilandMargaritas
@SoilandMargaritas 3 месяца назад
I already purchased a mesh/insect protection fabric that is keeping that bed intact for now, my worry with that is that also the pollinators won't be able to go inside... I think I will try to keep it as open as possible here and there.
@dustyflats3832
@dustyflats3832 3 месяца назад
@@SoilandMargaritas brassicas don’t need pollinators😉 so your good. Also the strawberries won’t this year either if you don’t harvest this year.

The past week, I noticed in the mornings that something had been digging into my Greenstalk. One of the pockets on the bottom had a significant amount of soil pulled out, and I noticed that it even managed to climb to the top tier and dig around there, though the damage isn't as bad. I suspect a family of raccoons. I'm thinking I will cover the whole Greenstalk with frost fabric and see if that helps deter them.

Went out to get some lettuce for dinner and ended up murdering slugs 🫠 Every year it seems like we add another pest 😤 I’ve read that rabbits can’t jump into beds 2ft or higher. Good to know, I might add some higher ones. Also there is a granular product (Repels All) that holds up pretty well even when exposed to water.
