G' morning my soil sister! 🌞 I have always loved saving seeds. Sure the waiting makes the garden look a mess, but only true gardeners will see the beauty of the plants in their seed setting phase. Happy Monday!

Seed saving anticipation makes me feel like a kids again - I get sooo excited 😆 My absolute fav - I start saving my marigold (tagetes patula) seeds as early as July when the first blooms go to seed, to encourage more blooms. For the echinacea, b/c you live in Indiana which gets a real “winter” like me in NY, I recommend you just sow the seeds where you want them now and they’ll come up next spring. Simple: set it & forget it 🌱 Cold stratification is used mostly by folks who dont get cold winters like we do.

@@SoilandMargaritas I had quite a few new plants this year (echinacea and others) without even trying! It’s definitely the easiest option, and they’re so easy to transplant in the spring. I did that and now have vigorous (free!) plants all over the garden! I’m also going to be adding a lot of self-sowing annuals and biennials. Anytime I can reduce the seed-starting work I’m game!

Echinacea seeds germinate well. I have collected for several years. I replant some of mine in my garden in the fall. Good outcome for me. Zone 6a

My nasturtiums in hanging baskets dropped mature seeds and now I have little plants already sprouting underneath them in my flower beds 🙃 They’re a gift, but at this point in the season I doubt they’ll do much. But I’ll be saving some, for sure! They were so easy to grow this year. Also, I save the desiccant packets that come in products and I include them with the seeds when I store them in jars. That way if there’s any moisture, the seeds aren’t in danger.

Hey Roxana. This was a pleasant hanging out in the garden with you. Seed saving is a fun and exciting process and I save hard to find varieties. Saving seeds for me is like a kid in a candy store, because I like the fact that they are free, this year I am going to try my Hot Lips salvia which are hard to find plants and pricey, I had great success with winter sowing this year, so that is going to free up space on my indoor seed starting station next year

Great info. I will save canna seeds this year.Fyi If the flowers are open pollinated they may not come true to type unless they are cloned from cuttings. I went through a lot of trouble saving seeds, selecting colors for saving and found out the hard way. It's worth saving seeds, lots of savings and tons of flowers that perform well in my garden

Thank you for this information. I put three envelopes of zinnias out in my front yard this year. I’m amazed at how few seeds are in each envelope. I am going to save the seeds from the flowers that I got. I fortunately we have a deer or maybe a javelina that eats them, not the flower but the foliage. That’s a bit disappointing but at least I will have a lot of seeds. I’ll try to protect them next year. They make a lovely cut flower for the table. 😊

I hear you! The amount of seeds in some envelopes is ridiculous, you can get triple the amount of seeds from just one bloom!

Thank you for the video! I have grown cone flower from seed before ( did not cold stratify) and was surprised how easy it was! I may try putting some seed in the ground this fall and see if they come up in the spring... I think you’ll have great success with all the seed starting experience you’ve already had ! I’m a fairly new subscriber and just wanted to let you know I really enjoy your content and style🌿 I’d love to see a quick walk thru your veggie garden !

I save seeds from all my plants that aren’t F1 hybrids. I took cuttings from all my salvias as back ups in case we have another freaky winter and to share with my family. I think I’m going to try taking cuttings of some of my hardy hibiscus plants. Do you ever take cuttings? Thanks

So I accidentally did last year (cuttings) from my hydrangeas and I am trying again this year, I am going to try to take some from my coleus and I'll see if I can keep them inside for the winter, just for fun.

Love your video, I grow mine from seeds, I germinate my seeds in damp papertowel in plastic baggie, they will sprout in there, just have to have patients, they may take a week or longer, and then they can be planted in pots or outside, as long as they have space around them

I am planning on trying purple coneflower next year. I too have several of the hybrid varieties. I’ve been told that the seeds are not usually true to the plant that you purchased. And that they often come out as purple coneflower. For that reason, if you want that specific coneflower it’s best to divide that specific plant. Like I said, I haven’t tried it myself so I don’t know how accurate that is. It’s just what I’ve read and been told. I’m anxious to see yours when they bloom. The hybrids are expensive so id love to be able to grow them from seed! Your videos are great! Thank you

I will definitely keep this in mind in case I get a bunch of purple blooms from these, dividing is definitely the way to make sure you get the exact same thing. Good luck!

Thanks for showing how to collect seeds. I’m planning to do this. I’m surprised that you don’t label the bags first. When you don’t know what the seeds look like, definitely pay close attention to what you have collected. Photos of the plant and seeds will be useful for a novice. I like the idea of the small jars. I will use the paper bags meanwhile.

I can pretty much tell a snapdragon from a zinnia bloom or a nasturtium from a canna, if I was doing different varieties of the same plant I would definitely label the bags first, but I personally don’t need to for these.

As for the coneflowers, I tried to Winter Sow them with ZERO success. I have had better luck just sprinkling the seed around the garden before Winter. I am in Eastern Iowa, zone 5b... just be sure you know what the leaves look like so you don't mistake them for weeds. To me they just do better when I let the process happen without getting involved.

Scarlett Salvia. I grew it from seed this year. Super easy to grow, very showy, keeps blooming and no staking required. I will grow again next year. 😎

The very true red is scarlet sage Salvia, that’s the one I collected seeds from… the one burgundy-ish in color around the Salvia is red spike amaranth

I feel like if I do it for one person I should be fair and do it for all, and honestly, I don't think I have enough seeds to share with everyone.

@@tinachristensen4008 The yellow coneflowers plants I found at a local nursery, I have never seen this variety so I am hoping I can get the same color and not the regular purple ones.
